Welcome back again, or just welcome!I’ve probably shared a lot with you about what our plans and goals are for 2016. Here in this newsletter I have combined the Welcome Letter and the Handbook Introduction into one Newsletter Article. Read and enjoy. Our Key Focus Areas During 2016Personal Best in the Context of High ExpectationsThis year I am looking forward to you working with us to ensure your children do their very best in their studies, the wearing their uniform to a high standard, and having high expectations of their behaviour and general courtesy and respect. While we are very keen to encourage our children to do their very best, don’t be frightened to express disappointment in your children if they have not put in their best effort. They will respect you for your willingness to place boundaries on their behaviour and work output. One day they will need to enter the workforce, leave home and be independent of you. These are skills they will need to be the best and

most employable young people to enter the workplace and further study arenas:• Goal setting• Practice • Hard work• Focused/deep learning• Quiet, lengthy commitment to a task.

Collegiality and Collaboration• Faithful people of integrity with

compassionLooking at personal best is extremely important because we can focus on a students’ strengths, gifts and abilities. Unfortunately, we live in a ‘do it the easy way’ culture. We live in the shallow culture where getting something done quickly and with least effort is OK.This year we want to expect more from our students. We want to “Do Hard Things”. This is the name of a book written by teenage brothers (Alex and Brett Harris) which says that we don’t expect enough of young people and that we should be asking for more. They challenge us to help our children to intentionally do five kinds of hard things:1. Things that are outside their comfort

zone.2. Things that go beyond what is

expected or required.3. Things that are too big to accomplish

alone.4. Things that don’t earn an immediate

payoff.5. Things that challenge the cultural

norm. We’d all benefit from applying those principles to our own lives too.Let’s have a very exciting and positive year together at Charlton. Let’s have high expectations. Let’s do our Personal Best. Let’s keep building our beautiful Community where we feel safe and supported.Love to all.Sue

How do we feel at the beginning of a new year? Excited, daunted, hopeful or afraid. In the beginning God created, he saw the potential of life in all its beauty and wonder and made a decision to create something out of nothing. He is the inventor, the author and the sustainer of life who declares that it is good. Even with all its difficulty, he says that life is worth it. However you might feel about the year ahead, it’s important to know that God is the author of new beginnings.

2016 is a year that can brim with hope if we are willing to look to the God who is worth trusting. How about you? Are you willing to put your trust in Him? The answer to that question will shape your way forward.

or the weekGenesis 1:1-3

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface

of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And

God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated

the light from the darkness.

Secondary Swimming Carnival

The senior school swimming carnival was held last Thursday and this was my first Charlton Christian College carnival. What a fantastic day it was! The weather started a little uncertain. However, the enthusiasm of staff and students was high. It was wonderful to see so many students dressed in house colours, supporting their peers. The cheers and chants were loud and it was an impressive effort to hear Booth’s war cry win the challenge.

I was so encouraged to see such wonderful examples of sportsmanship from many students, those who excelled in the pool and broke records, to those who conquered a personal best achievement. The effort of most in the all in group mega relay was FANTASTIC!!! So many swimmers completing SO many laps!! Well done to COURT on their overall house win for the day and well done to everyone who participated! Mrs Hawgood.
