FROM THE PUBLISHER

Welcome to Coastal Christian Family!

Isn’t May a beautiful time at the beach? The weather is getting warmer and we are beginning our summer touristseason here on the Emerald Coast. We are glad to see our visitors. They help our economy by spending moneyand creating jobs. For that, we are very thankful. My thought is let’s give these tourists more than just beautifulbeaches, fabulous restaurants and shopping. Let’s give them Jesus. Let’s show them the love of Christ while theyare here. We have our own mission field right here in front of us. You only have to look around. Last summer Ihad a vacationer call me after getting back home to say she had picked up Coastal Christian Family and was sohappy to find Jesus at the beach!

The Lord instructs us in His word to tell others about Him. It’s not hard to show kindness to others or tell themwhere they can find a church service while on vacation. We have churches that have services on the beaches onSunday morning and there are Vacation Bible Schools going on all over the area. Let’s be radical and turn touristseason into a season for bringing people to Christ!

He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Mark 16:15

May & MotherMay and Mother’s Day evoke many memories of my dear mother. Hardly aday passes that either my husband Steve or I will begin a sentence with “AsMamma Willie would say.” Her sayings have become known as “Wilieisms”in our family. She didn’t mean to be funny nor did she know she was, butrecalling some of her sayings and comments never fails to bring a smile tomy face.

When one of her children of grandchildren would achieve something, shewould comment, “I’m so proud of you, I don’t know what to put you in.”Often when we would sit down to one of her lovely meals, there would besomething on the table we didn’t recognize. Steve would ask, “Willie, whatis in this?”

She would simply reply, “Something good. If I told you,you might not eat it.” She knew there were certain foodsSteve wouldn’t eat. Turnip greens was one of those, but finally after she insisted he try them for theumpteenth time, he finally tasted them andactually liked hers. One reason was shethought a little sugar helped anything. Shehelped the greens a lot.

If there was a person who had fallen

into some evil ways, Mother would whisper, “She’s just gone to the bow-wows.” One of her dear nieces and her husband had visited us from NorthCarolina. It was the middle of summer, but as we were all saying our good-byes, Mother said, “Your visit has just made Christmas.” We all had a laughat the time, but now when something makes us happy, we quote her andsay, “That just made our Christmas.”

Mother played the piano at their little country church from the time shewas eleven years old until near her death at ninety-one. If she thought themusic was dragging a bit, from her place on the piano stool, she wouldspeak up and say, “Let’s pick that up a little.” In her later years, she wouldhave problems finding the number the director would call out. One day sheflipped through the hymnal one way and then back the other. When shefinally found the number, she eased the tension the congregation felt for herwhen she spoke up and said, “That one almost wasn’t in my book.”

Yes it’s May, so I will follow the tradition which was important to myparents by going to Decoration Day, but as I place flow-

ers on their graves, it won’t be withtears, but with smiles as I think of

the joy they brought in my life.

— Barbara Eubanks

HUMOR IN HOLY PLACES

Faith, Hope, and ObedienceThere are just some things that a mother tells herchildren regardless of their ages. My sons are nowgrown men, but when they leave the house, I stillsay, “Fasten your seat belts!” If it’s raining, I have totell them that the roads will be slippery (as if theywouldn’t know!) I realize that I have told themthese things every time they have gotten into theircars since they began driving, and even if I didn’tsay it, I know they KNOW to do it; and yet, I stillhave to SAY it.

I remember things my mother used to say. Evennow, when I leave her house, she still wants me tocall her when I get home just to let her know Imade it safely. I also remember being sick as ayoung child, Mom putting a cold cloth on my fore-head and saying softly, “Honey, I wish I were theone sick and not you,” and she meant it. I have said(and meant) those same words to my boys.

There are several mothers described in the Biblewhose words or actions reflect just the same selflesslove as that of many mothers today. Jochebed,

Hannah, Elizabeth, and Mary are just a few exam-ples. Each of these women showed their faith andobedience to God in various ways.

Jochebed gave birth to a son when the king ofEgypt was having all boy babies killed. Placing himin a pitch-covered basket in the reeds by the bankof the Nile River, this mother had faith that Godwould provide a way for her infant to survive…andHe did---right in Pharoah’s household!

Hannah was barren and bullied because of it. Sheprayed and wept for a child. She promised Godthat if He would give her a boy baby, she wouldgive him into the Lord’s service. He did, Samuelwas born, and Hannah kept her vow.

Elizabeth was advanced in years, childless, and bar-ren. Not only did God give her a baby and thussilence those who had reproached her for beingchildless, her son would become known through-out the world and across the ages as John theBaptist and would be “great in the sight of theLord” (Luke 1:15).

Mary—visited by the angel Gabriel and told themost unbelievable future---believed and replied in

obedience and faith, “Behold the maidservant ofthe Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.”(Luke 1:38) Soon, Mary would give birth to theLamb of God.

As a mother, I read these accounts of obedient, faithful women, and I am both humbled anduplifted. Their lives, while at first filled with fear,near-hopelessness or even public scorn, were trans-formed by the power of God to hope, faithfulness, and obedience. Those transformations are modelsfor us of what we could be…of what we should benot only as mothers, but also as women. God lovesus and wants to bless us. May we be faithful andobedient, trusting Him to take care of our futures,no matter what they hold, knowing that…

“…all things work together for good to those who loveGod, to those who are the calledaccording to His purpose.”(Romans 8:28)

AN ENCOURAGING WORD

BRINGING OUT THE WINNER IN YOUR CHILD

Social Media & Your Child’s Self WorthFacebook, Instagram and Twitter all play such a pivotal role in our children's feelings of self-worth. For thefirst time in history, our children can get an up to the minute report on how they are fitting in on the localpopularity polls simply by checking their number of "likes" on a photo or comment they posted.Unfortunately, they measure themselves and others this way. They can brag and tell everyone exactly howmany friends they have or how large their numbers of followers are on twitter. Personally, I wouldn't havefared very well if there was a constant barometer tracking how popular or unpopular I was.

My first suggestion is to keep your children off of all social media as long as you can. Facebook saysyou need to be at least 13 years old to have an account. In my opinion, this is still too soon. Younghearts carry strong emotions and can be so easily hurt, causing self-esteem issues that they may carry with them the rest of their lives if they are not dealtwith properly.

You and I have a very large mountain to climb if one of our children has their reputation and name slandered by an untrue statement, or even one thatmight be true but should not have been put out there on a public forum. Make sure that all measures are in place to ensure that your child is not gettingall of their self-worth from their "cyber friends." Have a real relationship with them, and above all make sure they are growing in their relationship withGod. Also, be sure they are surrounding themselves with the right type of true friends. When kids are younger, you can steer them in the right direction. As they get older, you have to make it a point to be involved and know who they are hanging out with. If you don't know your child's 5 best friends thenyou are not involved enough.

Make sure that your children know just how important they are. Don't let the trappings of today's society fool them into thinking theyare any less that what they were born to be - a child of God!

What does it meanto be “one nationunder God”?

Is the United States still onenation under God?This is the vital question askedby Richard Capriola in his latestbook, A Nation Under Judgment, released in April of 2014.

Using his signature style – sim-ple and effective – Capriola out-lines our nation’s social policiesand contrasts them with what he believes is God’s point of view fromScripture. Reviewing policies such as hunger, poverty, homelessness, theenvironment, and income inequality among others Capriola challenges hisreaders to examine these issues and compare them to God’s perspective.

What does it mean to be “one nation under God” Capriola asks his readers.“Do the words have value only in times of national crisis?” He explained“Our Founding Fathers believed the words were more than a political slo-gan. Have we strayed from their vision?”

Capriola explained the purpose of his book: “I want A Nation UnderJudgment to be a thought provoking journey that empowers readers todecide for themselves if our nation is moving away from God’s point ofview when crafting social policies.”

A Nation Under Judgment defines wisdom as the ability to see things fromGod’s point of view and Capriola asks readers to examine if our nation islosing its wisdom and moving away from God.

“Our nation seems to be reaching a boiling point” he said. “We appear rest-less and frustrated with a dysfunctional Congress that’s more interested inpolitical bickering than solving the critical issues facing our nation.” Heacknowledges that much of our dissatisfaction is due to the anemic eco-nomic recovery and high unemployment. But he challenges readers to ask ifthe dissatisfaction might run deeper. “Could it be that a part of our uneaseis a deep feeling that our nation is moving away from God’s point of view?”

Early reviews for the book have been impressive. For example, HeatherRandall, CEO of Christian Women Affiliate, said it’s “Well researched andScripturally based.” She added “A Nation Under Judgment seeks to be a cat-alyst for inspiring believers toward deeper biblical thought regarding socialpolicy.”

Richard R. Blake, writing for Reader Views said, “A Nation Under Judgmentis a clarion call to the dangers of national pride, indifference, exploitation, current trends, and of the danger of a nation moving away from God’spoint of view.”

Dolores Liesner, a reviewer for Christian Women Affiliate, wrote “Every leg-

islator, and every believer, apolo-getic, preacher and evangelist needsthis resource on their shelves.”

A Nation Under Judgment is pub-lished by Mill City Press and isavailable on Amazon. A trailer ofthe book can be viewed atwww.ANationUnderJudgment.com

Deck Design Ideasto Make the Most ofSummer Time

Your deck should accommodate differentaspects of your lifestyle, including entertain-ment, relaxation, and places where the chil-dren can play. Think in terms of how you canorganize your deck space into separate areasfor your different needs. Create a shelterednook for a quiet hideaway by using decorativescreens, trellises, or planters. If you are build-ing a deck from scratch – and you have thespace – consider outdoor deck design ideasfeaturing multiple layers. If that isn't feasible, changing the direction of the deck boards isan easy approach to visually carving out aseparate space.

Color. Using different stain colors to designate where one area begins and another ends is a great way to define space for both new and existing decks. Youcan incorporate a variety of deck color ideas into a single space – including adding different hues to the transition area leading from your home's interiorspace to the deck, or as a design element for visual impact. Your exterior wood and deck stain options include transparent, semi–transparent, and solidcolor stains. Area Benjamin Moore retailers can share with you color options and deck design ideas that will work for you and your family.

Lighting. To create the perfect mood for relaxation, consider adding to your deck candles (from large stand–alone pillars to clusters of tiny tea lights),lanterns (hurricane, paper, or glass),string lights (wrap around nearby trees/ including potted ones on the deck, deck railings, or along awnings andumbrellas), chimeneas and solar lighting(along steps and entryways for safe stepping).

For additional wood deck design ideas, tips and easy instructions on staining your deck, see your local Benjamin Moore retailer and visitwww.benjaminmoore.com for videos and how-to articles.

SPECIAL FEATURE

Mom’s Night OutShowcases South

The new feature film Mom’s NightOut follows a trio of overwhelmedyoung moms who desperately needan evening with high heels and adultconversation. When their husbandsagree to watch the kids for just threehours, the night falls apart in ahilarious unraveling of mayhem.Directed and shot in Alabama byBirmingham native’s Jon and AndyErwin, the laugh-out-loud portrayalof the chaos of parenting opened intheaters just in time for Mother’sDay weekend and has received verypositive reviews.

When first presented the script forMom’s Night Out, the Erwin broth-ers say they couldn’t believe howmuch it resembled their own lives.Jon and wife Beth are parents ofthree preschoolers. Andy and wifeMandi have two preschool age chil-dren. “Andy called me and said,‘This script is everything our fami-lies are living right now, havingyoung kids, and it’s just hysterical,’”says Jon Erwin. The film hinges ona question all parents find them-selves asking: Am I doing a goodenough job? In the age of socialmedia, Andy Erwin notes that thepressure to compare oneself to oth-ers makes parenting today different from decades past. “I think everybodyputs their best out on Facebook and Pinterest, and living in that world a lot

of times moms in particular feel likethey are failing,” he says. “It’s createdkind of an unfair perfect expectationof what a parent looks like, ratherthan realizing it’s about finding themeaning in the chaos. [This] movielooks at what does God expect of usas parents as opposed to what socialmedia puts out there.”

The film is also a love story about ahusband (Sean Astin) encouraginghis wife (Sarah Drew) through theups and downs of life with threesmall children. “He plays this lovableguy that just tries really hard to sup-port his wife, but they’re not talkingthe same language,” says AndyErwin. “In the process he begins tolearn what his wife is really looking

for and needs to be supported, howto affirm and celebrate who she is.”

With faith and trust in God centralto the Mom’s Night Out message, theErwins hope the film will encouragetheir own wives and all mothers ofhow beautiful and important theirjob really is. “A lot of moms aredrowning under the weight of theirown expectations,” says Jon Erwin.“You know what, God’s got you rightwhere He wants you. He’s given youeverything you need… You’re God’smasterpiece, and there’s no mistakein the kids He gave you or the jobyou are doing. Keep going becausewhat you are doing is incredibly

important, and loving a child is never a mistake.” — Camille Smith Platt

Starring Sarah Drew, Sean Astin and Patricia Heaton, Mom’s Night Out waspartially filmed in Helena, Pelham and downtown Birmingham, Ala.

Directors Jon and Andy Erwin praise Alabama businesses and residents forbeing so accommodating during the filming of Mom’s Night Out, includingblocking off several city streets. “We could never do this type of stuff inLos Angeles with a movie of this budget, so it’s a huge credit toBirmingham and Alabama and their support of us.”

Anti-BullyingMovement

So why start yet another anti-bullying movement? That was my question when I felt the God-nudge to write a trilogy for tweengirls centered around the bullying crisis. Hadn’t it been done? Wasn’t therealready enough information out there? In the general market perhaps. But Iwas dumbstruck when I discovered that little to nothing has been done specifi-cally in the Christian community. Yet who, truly, has more of the answers thanwe do?

The Sermon on the Mount is basically a handbook for the bullied, the bulliesand the bystanders. Seriously. In Matthew chapters 5 through 7, Jesus might aswell have been sitting down with a group of eight to twelve year old girls say-ing, “Here’s what to do if you see somebody in trouble. And this is what youdo if a bully comes after you. And this, this right here? This is how you canchange your mean behavior.”

That is how the Mean Girl Makeover trilogy came to be. Thomas NelsonPublishing (Tommy Nelson, to be exact) has allowed me the freedom to createa true-to-tween-life story about three different girls who face the bullying crisisfrom three different viewpoints.

So Not Okay, to be released in May, is the experience of a girl who hasremained under the bully radar but who can no longer stand by and watch“the mean girls” take control. With the help of a wise young woman mentor,Tori and her Tribelet turn from bystanders to upstanders who help the bulliedgirl overcome social alienation and verbal abuse — and begin to turn the atti-tude of the entire sixth grade around. With them the Code for Respecting theDignity of Every Human Being takes shape. And its basis? Right ... the Sermonon the Mount .. woven without chapter and verse into the story and hopefullyinto the minds of the readers.

You Can’t Sit With Us, to be released in the fall of 2014, is told from the pointof view of the bullied girl who has depended on the protection of the Tribeletin Book 1 and now has to learn to take some of that responsibility on herself.Still guided by Lydia the mentor and supported by the Tribelet, Ginger facesmore secretive, physical attacks and uses concrete, specific ways to stop the“mean girls” from bullying not only her but their other victims as well. TheGospel lessons are again quietly inherent.

Sorry I’m Not Sorry, a winter 2015 release, does what few fiction titles do, andthat is present a bullying story through the eyes of the bully herself. Kylie, our“mean girl,” steps up her efforts to continue bullying anonymously — andthus instilling even more fear — through the use of cyberbullying. Once dis-covered and put into the hands of our young mentor, she finds out why shetreats people the way she does and eventually uses her natural power tobecome a leader in the movement to stop the very bullying she masterminded.

As the Tommy Nelson team and I have worked together on this trilogy, we’verealized that we’re called to do more than simply publish books and hope forthe best. Bullying reaches its peak in the sixth and seventh grades. Ten to four-teen year old girls are at an even high risk for suicide because of bullying thanother youth groups. Socioeconomic class has very little effect on those statis-tics. We knew we had to do more.

So we have created a movement called SO NOT OKAY, and its hub will belaunched on my website www.nancyrue.com at the same time as the firstbook. Tween girls, their parents and their educators will be able to visit thatdedicated page and find:

Page 13: Coastal Christian Family Magazine - May 2014

Tribelet uses in So Not Okay• Downloadable tip sheets for girls, parents and edu-

cators• A brochure outlining the workshops I can bring to

schools, co-ops, church groups and homeschoolgatherings

In addition to my website, Tommy Nelson also hasplans for supporting the movement with logo stick-ers for book covers, their own website, and all of theabove downloadables on NELSON FREE.

Do we want to sell books? Of course. Stories havegreat power to inspire and motivate and equip – toget young readers to say, “I want to do THAT!” Themore readers, the more motivation, the morechange. Bullying is NOT a “normal” part of child-hood, something that will just go away when kidsgrow up. We only need one encounter with an over-

bearing boss to know that isn’t true. So, yes, we wantthose sales numbers high, so that this can be thegeneration that stops the hate. It is possible.

The SO NOT OKAY Movement is designed to sup-port our mini-women in carrying on the message ofthe books. Jesus shows us how to deal with bullying. We can show them, in real ways, ways that makesense, ways they can be a part of. This brings thepower of story into their own lives. This shows themhow Jesus works.

The movement will first focus on the largest group:the Bystanders. If thirty percent of students areinvolved in bullying, either as victims or “meangirls”, seventy percent are watching it happen. Theyhave the most power just by virtue of sheer num-bers. The problem is that they aren’t being shownwhat to do.

They’re afraid the bullying will turn on them or thatthey will have to become bullies themselves just tosurvive. Better just to keep a low profile, right? Thisfirst wave of the movement will give that large andpotentially powerful group tools and teach themwhat Abraham Joshua Heschel, the great OldTestament theologian, taught: “Few are guilty. All areresponsible.”

Why just girls? We’ve found that girl-bullying and boy-bullying aretwo entirely different things, though the lastingemotional scars are disturbingly the same. Girls, weknow, will respond to this direct, here’s-what-to-do-about this approach.

Boys, not so much. We’re still looking at how toweave the support boys need into stories they’ll read. But in the meantime, the principles Jesus lays outfor anti-bullying can be applied by wise parents andeducators to what tween guys are going through. Not to worry – we have their backs too!

If you would like to be on the ground floor of thismovement, please join our Facebook group, affec-tionately known as SNOGS (SO NOT OKAYGROUP SUPPORT). We’ll load you up with infor-mation, Tweetables, Shareables, Likeables and oppor-tunities to blog about and/or review the books. Weare the Body of Christ. Let’s work together to help hisprecious generation live in safety, and in love.

HEALTHY LIVING

Taking Your Meds the Right WayMedications can make a world of difference—if you take them the right way.Half the time, though, this doesn’t happen, at least when it comes to drugs doc-tors prescribe for chronic conditions.

Sometimes people miss doses. Or they might stop refilling the prescription ornever get it filled in the first place. Why does this happen? Well, certainly cost orside effects of drugs can be an issue. Also, complex dosing schedules or multipledrugs can be really confusing. You might feel as though you need a multi-pagespreadsheet just to keep track!

The problem is not taking medications the right way can threaten your health, increase complications, and lower your quality of life. And sometimes skippingdoses can increase the risk of resistant strains of certain “bugs.”

Take your medications the right way? Increase the benefits and decrease therisks of taking your medications. It’s helpful to know about all the medicationsyou’re taking and about any problems you’ve had in the past, such as allergicreactions or trouble swallowing.

Ask questions like these:How soon can I expect to feel better? When I start to feel better, can I stop taking the drug? Do I need a refill, or can I stop when the bottle is empty? Are there any drugs, supplements, or foods I should avoid while taking thismedication?

Are there any special directions for taking or storing this medication? Is there a cheaper generic version available? What should I do if I have side effects? What are the most common ones? What should I do if I miss a dose?

Make it a habit. Connect your medication routine with another well-estab-lished habit such as brushing your teeth. Keep drugs in sight. Put them whereyou won’t miss them. For example, if you need to take drugs with food, keepthem on the dinner table or TV tray. Use dosing containers. These containlabels for days of the week and dosing frequencies. You can find them in ourstore. Track it with technology. Options range from reminder pagers andwristwatches to smartphone apps and voice-command medication managers. We can discuss what might work best for you.

You can also simply create a printable medicine record with columns like these:• The name of the drug - What it looks like - How much to take - When to takeit • Start and stop dates - How it helps - Who to contactif there’s a problem. Taking medications isn’t a time towing it!

In the South, we are blessed with great live music. This can come in theform of the symphony on the greens, your local band busting out somefavorite tunes on the beach or a full-blown weekend long festival. But youask, “What do I wear?” Think bohemian-rhapsody meets cool-as-ice whileyou are rocking out or simply chilling out.

Sunnies! I am a big believer in the importance ofgreat shades. Year round my sunglasses are a goto accessory. Shield your eyes from harsh UVrays with shades that offer 100% protection.

Tie-Dye It Up. Tie Dye prints are a fail-safe-go-to when itcomes to hanging outdoors. The outrageous to calm-ing patterns, the loose fits, soft fabrics, the cool-girlvibe they give off…you just can’t go wrong.

Brace(let) Yourself. Layer colorfulbracelets to add pops of color toyour look. Don’t be afraid to mixand match metals, fabrics and col-ors. The more the merrier workswhen laying up your wrists. Ifyou’d like to rockonly one bold piece, then your go toshould be a cool-bold-beautiful cuff.

Hippie Chic. Show yourlove for the oldiesand the originalhipsters with aloose-fitting tank,60s or 70s inspired– that won’t end upclinging to you if

temperatures rise.

The Perfect Match. Neutral-toned sandals go with everything, so you won’t haveto worry with packing two or three different pairs of shoes. Comfort is key.Depending on your height and preference, a sandal or wedge can allow youto dance all night.

A Denim Do. This season theworn-in-looking jeanshorts are a must becausethey go with everything.Don’t worry, today’s cutoffsdo not have to be like yes-terday’s Daisy Dukes. Theright denim short shouldcompliment your assetsand not expose them.

Hats Off to You. Rock a hat andblock the sun from youreyes while looking totallyboho chic. A great go to accessory this season.

Now that we all know what to wear to the show,it’s time to treat your-self to a night out. Buythose concert tickets, dress the part, be com-fortable, enjoy your favorite band and have ablast doing it! Oh and Rock On from the insideout!

WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY?early 195,000,000 people want to be happy…Or at least that many have viewed Pharrell Williams’ smash hit on YouTube– and if you have seen it, you know that it is tough to watch it withoutwanting to jump up and bust someminion moves, right? And if you have way too much freetime on your hands, or even ifyou’re just an insomniac, you cangroove to Happy all day and nightat 24hoursofhappy.com.

An amazing array of all sorts ofshapes and sizes are showing offtheir dancing skills on the video, and if you must know, my personalfavorite is at 11:23 a.m. when theguy with the huge afro flits and frol-ics down the avenue.

So, are you happy? I don’t mean ina “dance down the street” kind ofhappiness – although there are defi-nitely moments for that. What I’mtalking about is the sort of persistentand abiding contentment and joy onthe inside no matter what is hap-pening on the outside. In otherwords – is there sunshine and danc-ing on the inside, even when there isdarkness and trial on the outside?

My guess is, no, there usually isn’t.That’s because we base our happi-ness on all the planets in our solarsystem aligning perfectly – andwhen they don’t, we get lost in space.

But did you know that long, LONG before Pharrell Williams had the ideafor Happy, the Apostle Paul gave us the true formula for happiness? But bewarned, when you read his teaching, they may not make sense at first:Brothers and sisters, I want you to know that the things that have happenedto me have actually advanced the gospel. The whole Praetorian Guard andeveryone else knows that I’m in prison for Christ. Most of the brothers andsisters have had more confidence through the Lord to speak the word bold-ly and bravely because of my jail time. Some certainly preach Christ withjealous and competitive motives, but others preach with good motives. They are motivated by love, because they know that I’m put here to give adefense of the gospel; the others preach Christ because of their selfishambition. They are insincere, hoping to cause me more pain while I’m inprison. What do I think about this? Just this: since Christ is proclaimed inevery possible way, whether from dishonest or true motives, I’m glad andI’ll continue to be glad (Philippians 1:12-18).

This was written at a time in Paul’s life when he was over 60 years old andin prison chains. Most men his age would rather be playing golf (if it hadbeen invented), or at least retired to some sunny beach. Instead, Paul isoverjoyed even though he has been left to rot in confinement, and jealouspastors were out preaching the gospel simply to make money or put their

freedom in his face!

Yet here he is, dancing on the insidelike a kid with a huge afro, eventhough his circumstances seem likethey would more predictably bringdespair.

Why? Because to Paul, happinesswas dependent on His relationshipwith Jesus and the advancement ofthe gospel! To him, every person onthis earth faces certain and eternaldeath unless he/she puts their faithin Jesus Christ alone for salvation, sorather than focusing on his circum-stances, he placed his completeattention on Christ and His Cause ofmaking disciples.

And that made him happy.

How about you? Most of us allowour emotions and contentment to becontrolled by outward conditions, but may I suggest that we startfocusing our attention on our innerposition? We have a personal andpermanent relationship with JesusChrist, and He has called every oneof us to share the good news with a

dying world desperately searching for meaning, purpose, value and happi-ness in all the wrong places. If you want to find true happiness, model your life after the Apostle Paul.He said “no” to the world’s agenda for wealth, fame, power and position sohe could say “yes” to the advancement of the gospel and his calling to THECause.

And if you, like Paul, feel chained by your circumstances and relationships, follow his example and try making your chains a channel for proclaimingthe gospel. Take your eyes off yourself and your circumstances, and placethem on the needs of those around you. Then, whenyou experience the joy of sharing Jesus’ message ofhope and forgiveness, get ready to start dancing downthe street!

Exercise Your Taste BudsVacation time is almost here. Whether you go to aforeign country, the Alabama beaches, or just toGrandma’s house, try something new to eat. Exerciseyour taste buds.

During the past several years, I’ve traveled toBelgium, Holland, France, Italy and Israel. Each timeI encountered some different foods and traveledwith some people who wouldn’t try anything new. They talked endlessly about hamburgers and Frenchfries, steak and baked potatoes, and southern cookedvegetables with cornbread. Those all sound great, but when in a new place, try the unexpected, the dif-ferent, the unusual, and test your taste buds.

In Belgium it was fun to sample the delicious choco-lates and fancy desserts. Did you know Belgium isknown for their chocolates? In Holland the food wasmore streamlined “new European” and not very dif-ferent from eating in a classy restaurant in some bigcity.

But in France there were many new things to try. Iloved the French crepes—thin lacy pancakes filledwith meats or sweets, and the savory meat and veg-

etable quiches. The variety of breads and pastriesastonished me. Watching the French go to marketeach morning was interesting. They filled theirwoven baskets with fresh fruits, vegetables and fishcaught that morning. I enjoyed trying a number ofFrench cheeses for which they have an internationalreputation.

Now Italy- that’s my kind of food—from appetizersof prosciutto, cheese and olives to hand- made pastawith savory tomato sauces and freshly gratedparmesan cheese to hand-tossed pizza with arti-chokes and asparagus. The Italian chefs prepare theirfood with passion and sometimes come out to yourtable to chat and ask your opinion of their dishes. The Mediterranean style of cooking with onions, peppers, olives and tomatoes spice up any fish orchicken dishes. Italy is another country proud oftheir heritage of home baked breads, and I’m stilltrying to lose the 10 pounds I put on during theItalian trip.

Recently in Israel I tried some foods for breakfastthat you wouldn’t expect in the States. The hotelsserved salads galore- tossed greens, slaw, potatosalad, tuna salad and more including peppers, toma-toes and brown and black olives. There were omeletsand baked fish. No sausage, ham or bacon as thestaff had to keep the food kosher for the many

Jewish visitors. Fresh fruit was in abundance grownon farm collectives ( kibbutzes) or in the desertwhere water is brought in to grow flourishing cropsof bananas, pineapples, dates, and vegetables.

One night at the hotel, I tried fried green beans andfalafa balls (ground chickpeas with spices fried inballs). Put the falafa balls in pita bread, then add let-tuce, onion, hummus, and other condiments. Pressthe pita bread together which mashes the falafa, andyou have a typical Israeli sandwich. I enjoyed thismeal on the street in the market of old townJerusalem several times.

Well, wherever you visit, it’s best to follow the oldsaying, “When in Rome do as the Romans do.” Inother words try the unexpected. It’s fun, educationaland historical to eat something different. Your tastebuds will get excited and experience a good work-out! Happy travels!

INSTRUCTIONSSTEP 1: Press the two plunger cups together. STEP 2: Attempt to separate the plunger cups.

Suction occurs when thereis a difference in air pres-sure. As the two plungercups are pushed together, the air inside each plungeris forced out, creating alower pressure inside and ahigher pressure outside. This causes the twoplungers to sticktogether.

BIBLE CONNECTIONPushing the two plungercups together, forces the airout, causing the plunger tostick together. When weallow God to keep ourspiritual arteries

unclogged, the love of Christ can flow freely through us and to others keep-ing us even closer to God.
