Cornerstone Praise & Worship Center began “A Night in Bethlehem” in 2007 as a gift to the community. Since then, other churches have become involved in this enormous undertaking that people of all ages enjoy. The 2014 baby Jesus was 5-week-old Weston Burns, son of Daniel and Destiny Burns of Coalgate. Joseph and Mary were played by Cody and Breanna Moore. A NIGHT IN BETHLEHEM—Third grader Dakota Ingram and fourth grader Nathan Park singing “Hairy Christmas.” The Oklahoma Highway Patrol arrested two Coalgate men on drug charges the evening of December 18. A Stonewall man was arrested January 2 for driving under the influence of alcohol, and a Coalgate woman was arrested January 10 for driving under the influence of intoxicants. Trooper Jamey Miller said when he stopped a vehicle north of Coalgate at SH 31/131 for making an improper U-turn, he detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. The driver, Michael McCormick, 25, Coalgate, was unsteady on his feet and was fumbling for different objects inside the vehicle, according to the trooper. He was charged January 6 with misdemeanor driving under the influence of drugs, possession of marijuana and possession of a drug pipe. Timothy Edward Norris, 28, Coalgate, a passenger in McCormick’s vehicle, was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana and a drug pipe. Both men have pleaded not guilty to the charges and have been released on bond. They are scheduled for return court appearances on March 6. Lonnie Alexander, 69, Stonewall, was arrested the afternoon of January 2 for driving under the influence of alcohol. He was also cited for driving under suspension and transporting an open container of liquor. Alexander has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is scheduled for a March 6 court appearance. He has been released on $5,850 bond. Mikki Jeanette Simon, 43, Coalgate, was arrested January 10 for driving under the influence of intoxicants after trooper Heath Davidson came upon a vehicle accident at SH 31 and SH 48. Simon was not injured in the accident. Davidson said there was a very strong chemical odor coming from Simon’s person and she had gold paint around her mouth and on her hands. Gold paint was also sprayed on the dash, blinker switch and steering wheel, he said. Simon failed an eye test and had trouble with concentration and understanding simple instructions. During a consent search of the vehicle, three cans of gold paint were found in the trunk as well as two plastic bags used for inhaling the paint, according to Davidson’s probable cause affidavit. Simon has pleaded not guilty to the charge and was released on $1,000 bond. The case is set for March 6. The Coalgate Wildcats will be attempting to get back in the win column this week. The CHS round ball squad will have a pair of chances, including Tuesday’s home game with the Antlers Bearcats and Friday’s home date with the Konawa Tigers. The Coalgate boys were 0-3 in three games played last week – including a pair of setbacks to the Silo Rebels. Coach Lance Weeks’ Coalgate team fell 63-28 in a regular-season game on January 6 at Silo. The Wildcats also took a 65-53 defeat against Silo during the second round of the Kingston Invitation Tournament. The other loss last week was an 86-43 verdict against Class 3A’s second-ranked Atoka Wampus Cats. That decision came in the first round of the Kingston tournament. Coalgate’s first game in the 2015 season was the road trip to Silo. The visit was not a pleasant one for the Wildcats as they were dominated for most of the game by a very strong Silo squad. The Rebels ran off to leads of 19-8 after a quarter, 37-13 at the half and 54-21 at the end of three quarters. Silo finished off the win by outscoring the visitors 9-7 down the stretch, securing the 63-28 win. Coalgate ended up with six scorers in the game. However, none of the Wildcats finished in double digits in scoring. Dakota Powell was the closest with 9 points in the 35-point loss. On Thursday, Coalgate went back into action with a first-round game in the Kingston Redskin basketball tournament. The Wildcats were thrown into a showdown with the explosive Atoka Wampus Cats. The underdog Wildcats were not able to match the offensive firepower of the Atoka unit. Coalgate fell behind 22-8 in the first quarter and 43-24 at the half. The second half was more of the same. Atoka outscored CHS 25-14 in the third period and 18-5 in the fourth. The end result was an 86-43 win for the Wampus Cats. Coalgate was led in scoring by Rob Penney with a solid 16-point performance. Penney hit six field goals, one trey and one free throw.

Dakota Powell also scored in double figures in the game. Powell netted three

Wildcats looking to regain winning touch—Coalgate boys hope to rebound from recent losing skid

field goals, a trey and one free throw. C.J. Bills led the rest of the Wildcats with 8 points. The loss to Atoka dropped Coalgate into the consolation finals at Kingston. Facing a must-win against Silo, the Wildcats were beaten 65-53 by the SHS Rebels. The game went four quarters but was basically decided in the first eight minutes. Silo forged a 12-point lead (20-8) at the end of the initial quarter of action. Coalgate matched the Rebels point for point over the last three quarters. However, the double-digit deficit proved to be too much and the Wildcats lost by 12 points at the final buzzer. Brandon Courson had his most productive scoring night against the Rebels. He poured in 14 points. The balanced attack also included Nate Hardy and Bear Francis with 8 points each and C.J. Bills with 7. Dakota Powell and Rob Penney generated 5 points each while Nathaniel Daniel chipped in 4. Brandon Ragland rounded out the scoring with 2 points. Domestic Abuse 28-year-old Edgar Arnold Buchanan, Coalgate, was arrested the morning of January 6 for assaulting his live-in girlfriend. Chief Kenny Pebworth said he and Coal County Undersheriff Bobby Hatton responded to a residence on E. Delmar after the sheriff’s office received a report of a domestic in progress. When the officers arrived at the residence, Buchanan ran out the back door and continued running after he was ordered to stop. The officers drove down the road and spotted Buchanan running through a field. He was taken into custody a few minutes later. The alleged victim told Pebworth that Buchanan had struck her in the face and on her arms. She had swelling and bruising around her right eye, on her right cheek area and right ear and a busted lip. Buchanan was transported to the Coal County jail. He has pleaded not guilty to felony domestic abuse assault and battery and remains in custody on that charge as well as several charges he incurred after arriving at the jail. He is scheduled for a January 22 preliminary hearing conference on all charges. His bond was set at $100,000. Buchanan’s criminal record goes back to 2005 and includes drugs, domestic abuse, assault and battery on police officers, resisting arrest, malicious injury to property, and placing threatening/obscene phone calls.

Threatening phone call leads to arrest

Joe Bob Courson, 40, Coalgate, was charged January 9 with threatening to perform an act of violence. According to a probable cause

Coalgate Police Reportaffidavit filed by officer Markus Woods, Courson made a threatening telephone call to a woman on December 10 that was recorded. Woods stated that he listened to the recording of a male (identified as Courson by the woman and her husband) telling the woman she needed to stay out of his business — that he would burn her house down and didn’t care if she was in it. The woman told the officer that she had been subpoenaed to testify in a civil lawsuit involving Courson and Courson wasn’t happy about it. Courson’s estranged wife told Woods that Courson had made the threat previously and that they had argued about it. Courson has pleaded not guilty to the charge and is scheduled to return to court on March 6. He has posted a $2,500 bond.

Antlers man faces criminal charges

Neal Todd Shown, 46, Antlers, was charged January 12 with misdemeanor breaking and entering, making threatening telephone calls, and obstructing a police officer. Officer Anthony Garvin was dispatched to Circle N Market early morning January 11 to speak with a woman about a domestic that had taken place the previous night. The woman told Garvin that she and Shown had been arguing all night on the telephone and that he threatened if she went to work he had someone that was going to pull up to the store and shoot her. He also threatened to kill her children, she said. Garvin said while he was talking with the woman and reading text messages that Shown allegedly had sent her, Shown called several

times and circled the store in his pickup. The woman said Shown at one time had a firearm in his truck but the last time she saw it, it was in the trunk of his car that was parked at her residence. Shown was not living there, she said. Officer Cristine Hennessee was called to Circle N. After further interviewing and observing Shown circling the store, the victim was told to go to the sheriff’s office while Garvin and Hennessee went to the woman’s residence to look for the suspect. Garvin said while they were walking through the side yard of the residence, the suspect opened the door and asked who they were. The officers identified themselves and asked Shown to step outside but he slammed the door shut and locked it. Garvin said when he heard the man running through the house and moving objects around as if looking for something, he kicked the door open. The officers held Shown at gunpoint and ordered him to the floor. He was not armed. During questioning, Shown denied sending any threatening phone calls or text messages to the woman and insisted that he lived at the residence. He said he was there because he had rented a room at an Atoka motel during the night and had come to get some of his clothes. The motel manager told Garvin that no one by the defendant’s name had checked in. Shown was transported to the Coal County jail. He has entered a plea of not guilty to all charges and is scheduled for a return court appearance on March 6. He has been released on $1,000 bond with orders to have no contact with the alleged victim.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Bill Eastep; and brother, David

Townsend.Survivors include his lov-

ing wife, Virginia “Ginger” Lee Townsend (they would have been married 60 years on January 20, 2015); son, Mark Townsend and wife, Dodie; daughters, Joy Townsend, and Amy Townsend and husband, Jimmy Corn; sisters, Althea Richardson of San Antonio, TX; Lou Cooper and husband, Wayne of Ada, OK and Wanda Calvert of Lehigh, OK; grand-children, Bryon Townsend, Whitney Ziegler, Sarah Tidwell and husband, Jeff and Kara

Martin Luther King Jr. Day • January 19, 2015Martin Luther King Jr. played a pivotal role in race relations in the Unit-

ed States for nearly a decade. He helped secure the end of legal segregation of African-American citizens, created the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and served as a source of inspiration for black individuals across the globe.

Dr. King established a relationship with fellow African-American civil rights activist Bayard Rustin, who shared similar interests, including the teachings of Gandhi. Rustin would serve as King’s mentor and also was the main organizer of the March on Washington that took place on August 28, 1963. Approximately 250,000 demonstrators were involved in the march, and it was the largest demonstration in the nation’s capital up to that time. In front of the Lincoln Memorial, Dr. King issued his famed “I Have a Dream” speech. He later met with President John F. Kennedy to appeal for greater rights for African-Americans and called for an end of segregation.

As a result of his civil rights efforts, Dr. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on December 10, 1964, at the age of 35. He was the youngest person ever to receive the honor. He donated all of the prize money to his racial equality effort.

We will be closed Monday, January 19, 2015 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We will resume regular

Coalgate girls hungry for first “W”—Coach Scott Roe praises Lady Wildcats for hard work

The Coalgate Lady Wildcats are still in search

of that elusive first victory of the basketball season.

Coming into the week, Coach Scott Roe’s CHS ladies have played nine games … and lost nine games. Despite the lack of success in the win column, the first-year head coach is still proud of the Coalgate High School squad. “We are competing in every game,” Coach Roe said. “We are trying to find that first W (win). We will keep working at it to make it happen. I know we want to improve, to get better. I can’t take anything away from the effort. We just need to find a way to go get us a win.” Coalgate was set to play a pair of home games this week. The initial contest was to be against the visiting Antlers Lady Bearcats on Tuesday evening. CHS will follow up on Friday with a meeting against the visiting Konawa Lady Tigers. Last week, Coalgate opened the 2015 portion of the schedule by visiting the Silo Lady Rebels. The Lady Wildcats trailed by single digits at the half, 26-17. That provided a flicker of hope for the coach and his CHS players. However, Silo came out in the third quarter and blew open the game. The Lady Rebels outscored Coalgate 24-5 to pull ahead 50-22. The home team then outscored the Lady Wildcats 11-8 down the stretch to seal the 61-30 triumph. Shaylyn Coslow led Coalgate in scoring with 13 points. Taylor Hall was second on the team with 6 points. Jessie Sexton followed closely with 5 points - and Stasia Roebuck provided 4. Checotah Heathcock rounded out the scoring with 2 points. Coalgate moved into the Kingston Invitational basketball tournament on Thursday. The Lady Wildcats were paired up with the hosting Kingston Lady Redskins in a first-round meeting. Kingston raced away to an 18-2 lead in the first quarter. The Lady Redskins then outscored CHS 15-8 in the second period to grab a 33-10 halftime cushion. Coalgate was also outscored 7-6 in the third quarter and 8-5 down the stretch. The Lady Wildcats ended up on the short side of a 27-point decision, 48-21. The Lady Wildcats were led in scoring by Shaylyn Coslow with 9 points. Mallorie Humphreys provided 5 points and Taylor Hall dropped in 4. Jaylee Lenamond tallied 2 points and Karley Shores managed a free throw. By losing to Kingston, Coalgate dropped into the must-win consolation semi-finals on Friday. The luck of the draw forced the Lady Wildcats to play the Silo Lady Rebels for the second time in three days. Silo avoided an upset at the hands of the CHS girls. The Lady Rebels built up a 7-point lead in the first quarter, 12-7. Coalgate was able to match Silo’s 27

points over the last three quarters. The solid effort kept the margin of defeat at seven, 39-32. In the loss, Taylor Hall had her best game in scoring with 11 points. Coslow just missed landing in double-digit scoring with 9 points. Jessie Sexton was also a solid offensive performer with 7 points. Mallorie Humphreys added 3 points and Karley Shores scored 2. After this week’s two games, the Coalgate ladies will turn their focus to the upcoming Star Tournament. The Tupelo Lady Tigers saw their high school basketball record slip to 4-9 during the early portion of the 2015 schedule.

Coach Shawn Reeves’ THS girls suffered a conference loss to the Allen Lady Mustangs in the opening game of the New Year. Tupelo went down by a 52-29 count in a game played January 6 at Tupelo High School.

The Lady Tigers fell behind 15-6 in a slow first period. The 9-point deficit would end up making a majority of their losing point-spread. The Lady Tigers were outscored a combined 37-33 over the last three quarters.

Allen was ahead 26-18 at the half, 40-30 after three periods, and 52-39 at the final buzzer.

The top two THS offensive weapons were Brittany Sanders and Phylisha Chamberlain. Sanders was tops in scoring with 14 points. Chamberlain was also in double figures with 10 points.

Other Lady Tiger scoring came from Hailey Ellis with 8 points, Hayley Reeves with 5 and Lana Nelson with 2.

Fans were treated to a 3-point shooting ‘contest’ during the game. Sanders and Allen’s Allison Sells each drilled four treys on the night.

On Friday, Tupelo got caught up in a much closer contest. The Lady Tigers went to Coleman and battled the Lady Wildcats to an overtime game. Sadly, Tupelo came up on the wrong side of the 55-53 final

his girls take a 12-10 lead in the first quarter and a 19-17 halftime edge. The Lady Tigers extended the cushion to five points at 34-29. The hosting Lady Wildcats then rallied in the fourth quarter to outscore Tupelo 16-11. The effort tied the score at 45-45 at the end of regulation.

In the 4-minute extra period, Coleman outscored the Lady Tigers 10-8 to clinch the 55-53 triumph.

Phylisha Chamberlain led all scorers with her outstanding 26-point performance. The junior guard had scored 20 points twice earlier this season. She hit the 20-point mark in the consolation finals loss to Vanoss. She added 20 points in the December 16 win over Sasakwa.

Brittany Sanders was also a key weapon in the battle at Coleman. She scored 16 points in a losing cause.

Other points for THS came from Kaitlin Watson with 4, Lana Nelson with 3 and Haley Ellis and Hayley Reeves with 2 points each.

Tupelo was scheduled to host Earlsboro on January13 and then travel to Roff on January 16 for a varsity showdown.

By HERMAN BROWNTupelo correspondent

The Tupelo Tigers split a pair of decisions in their first week of basketball action during 2015. Coach Clay Weller’s Tigers were victimized 74-29 by a combination of issues. The most obvious issue is how explosive the unbeaten Allen Mustangs are this season. However, the untimely injuries to some front-line Tupelo players also played a major factor in the 45-point loss. “That is the best Allen team he (Coach Greg Mills) has had over there,” Coach Weller said. “I don’t know what would have happened, but I would have liked to play them with all of our guys healthy.” The injury bug has forced some of the younger players to grow up fast. These freshmen and sophomores have taken on key roles initially intended for veteran guys like Corey McCollum and Chisum Henry. But, as any coach knows, injuries are a part of basketball. The only thing to do is to press the inexperienced players into game action against some strong opponents on the Tupelo schedule. As for Allen, the Mustangs proved to be as dangerous as expected. “They shot really well,” Coach Weller said of the visitors. “They hit 10 3’s on us. They put some (younger, inexperienced) guys in there in the fourth quarter and they hit treys too! Allen has a bunch of good shooters.” Tupelo fell behind 19-4 in the first quarter. The margin grew to 22 points (33-11) by halftime. The third quarter edge went to Allen too, 15-10, to extend the cushion to 48-21. The Mustangs then emptied the bench in the fourth quarter but still smoked the nets for 26 points to only 8 by the Tigers. The final score swelled to 74-29. The Tupelo scoring parade included six players. Caleb Watson was the leader with 9 points. Joshua Gragg was just off the pace with 8 points. Christian McLean and Bry Bratcher followed with 4 points each. Luke Leland and Blake Pendleton rounded out the scoring with 2 each. Brandon Pardue was tops in rebound for the Tigers. He pulled down 8 missed shots during the game. The Tigers connected on

only 13 of 41 shots from the field. The bigger issue, however, may have been their 20 turnovers against the Mustangs. On Friday, Tupelo put on a much stronger showing at Coleman. The Tigers bounced to a 56-39 victory over the hosting Wildcats. The teams were tied at 9-9 in the first quarter. Tupelo then hit the jets and flew away to a 29-16 halftime lead. The Tigers came out in the third quarter and outscored Coleman 16-12. The strong effort earned THS a 45-28 advantage with eight minutes to play. The Tigers closed out the final period by matching Coleman’s 11-point output. The result was a 17-point victory for Coach Weller and his team. Bry Bratcher and Caleb Watson provided a winning one-two scoring combination. Bratcher erupted for 20 points. Caleb Watson was close back with a 17-point showing – a number equal to the victory margin. Watson’s all around game included 10 rebounds and 5 assists. Dalton Barnes was third on the squad with 7 points. Other offense included Luke Leland with 4 points, Christian McLean and Blake Pendleton with 3 each and Conor McCollum with 2. Tupelo knocked down six treys in the game. Bratcher drilled 3 of the 3-ball shots. Watson, Barnes, and Pendleton added one trey each to the total. Pardue was the leader in rebounds with a total of 11.Coach Weller saw some positive things from his team in the double-digit win. “I thought we were really good in spurts tonight,” he said. “Bratcher had a good shooting night and Watson played well on both ends. We had too many turnovers and got really careless with the ball in the 4th quarter.” The coach also touched on the injuries and other struggles the Tigers have faced in the past three months. “These guys have dealt with a lot of adversity this year,” he said. “So it’s always nice to see positive things occur.”---AT A GLANCEJan. 6 @ TupeloAllen 74, Tupelo 29Allen - 19 - 14 - 15 - 26 - (74)Tupelo - 4 - 7 - 10 - 8 – (29)
