The population defines the places that areimportanttothembywheretheylive,wheretheygatherandtheplacesthatareimportanttothem. One of the places that has defined ourcommunity is the Coal County Fair Barn.

When you engage in livestock shows andobserve the third generation of peopleparticipatinginthoseshows,youcansaythefairbarnisaplaceofimportancetopeople. The original purpose of all governmentwas to secure the liberties of its citizens.The only reason why government existsis for the people. One of those liberties istherighttoassemble.Ourlocalandcountygovernment has created just such a facilityforthoseassemblies—thatbeingthecountyfairbarn.Notonlyforourlocalcommunitybutforsurroundingcommunitiesaswell.Itis estimated thatwithin the last sixmonths,approximately 4,000-5,000 people outsideof Coal County have come to Coalgate foractivitiesgoingonatthefairgrounds. Thefairbarnhasbeenusedbymanygroupsand organizations. Everything from coonhunters, faith groups, weddings, funerals,receptions andbirthdayparties, high schoolproms, banquets and award programs tolargecompanygatherings,healthfairs,safetytrainings,andpoliticaleventsaswellascountyfairs,4-Handyouthsummerprograms,andnumerous livestockshowsforall speciesofanimals.ThebarnisincontinuoususebythecitizensofCoalCounty,andithasgottentheattention of groups in surrounding countiesthatarenowinterestedinrentingit.

The world needs good men. Yet these daysthere isn’tmuchappetite forallowingboys the fullexercise of their interests. Most boys don’t wantetiquette lessons. Theywant to go camping, learntosurviveintheforestanddootheradventuresomethings. Luckilyanall-maleenterpriseexisted—theBoyScouts—thosefunctionwastohelpboysbecomecompetentmen.Nowtheyareopeningtherankstogirls.

Even the military has apparently succumbedtothefashionableideathat therearenodifferencesbetween the sexes. In some places, they’re takingitfurther.California,whereIlive,nowoffersbirthcertificateswithathirdoption,neitherboynorgirl.Theycallit“nonbinary.”

I’mworried. I’mnot“concerned,”whichhassupplantedthemorehonestterm.I’mworried.HowcouldAmericans, thevastmajorityofwhomsurelydon’tadheretothesenotions,haveallowedthingstogetsoirrational?

The world needs strongmen. Without them,whowillprotectthe“village”fromenemies?Yearsago,ourcousin’s littleboywanted towearnothingbuymilitarygear. Atfamilyparties,heranaroundinhis camouflageandhelmethavingagrand time.Todayhe’salieutenantcolonelintheU.S.Army—agoodmanservinghiscountry.

Myfriendmarriedamanwithartistictalent.Butdeveloping it always came second to being a goodhusbandandprovidingforthefamily.Onlynowthathe’sretiredfromhisretailcareerishewinningprizesatlocalartshowswithhisbeautifulpaintings.

Itiswonderfulthatwomentodayhavesomanyopportunities to do andbewhat theywant, andnoonegetsfiredbynunsfromateachingjob,asIwas,forbeingmarriedandthreemonthspregnant.Evenpregnantstudentsaresafefromdismissal.Butwhymustwepretendthatmenandwomenarethesameorthatmasculinityistheproblem?

As part of a September forum on the FirstAmendment, teachers at York High School inElmhurst,IL,displayedanAmericanflagontheflooroftheschoollibrary.Theysaidtheywantedtoteachstudentstodealwiththeirfeelingsaboutthenationalanthem protests in pro football. Local veteransvisited the school and respectfully scooped up the

abusedflag.That’swhatgoodmendo.Maybeallthebadsexualbehaviorcomingtolightwillremindpeoplehow

muchweneeddecentmen.Thisisacountrywithahistoryofbrave,talentedandgoodmen.Letthembemen.

The Board of County Commissioners of Coal County met for a regular scheduled meeting on Wednesday, December 27th, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. in the conference room of the County Commissioners Building. Brock Jones called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. Roll was called by Brock Jones. Deputy Corwin Ridgway said when he activatedtheemergency lightsonhispatrolunit, thevehiclebeganswervingandcametoastoponthewrongsideof the roadway. Henoticed themankept duckingdownintheseatashewasdriving. Ridgwaysaidhedetectedastrongodorofmarijuanacomingfromtheinsideofthevehicle,andthemanadmitted that he had some marijuana in his boot.WhenRidgwayaskedhim if thatwaswhyhewasfranticallyreachinginthefloorboardandunder thedasharea,hesaidyes. Clerk Loudermilk said she has been contacted by Michelle Powell of SODA regarding changes to the CDBG grant application process. Loudermilk said previously the commissioners agreed to reapply for a grant that was denied last year, in which all three districts would split the $150,000 grant and each do a road project within their district. She said according to SODA, that will not be allowable, since it is technically three separate projects. She said Powell explained that the only way two commissioners could split the grant funds was if a county road crossed over into an adjoining district, because it would be one road project. Loudermilk explained that the county can have three open CDBG grants at one time, two for the county at $150,000 each and one county-sponsored project for a rural fire department or water department. Chairman Jones said he would like to check on sponsoring a grant for the Centrahoma rural water district. He said currently there are several residences on the west side of State Highway 48, such as the Weller’s, Fortner’s and Romines’, that cannot get rural water. He would like to give his constituents the opportunity to receive rural water if they wish to do so. Nick Lee said that he is interested in applying for a grant for Polk Road from Highway 31 to Avanzini Road, which is approximately 3 miles. Hensley said he would like to rotate the projects in the future between the three districts and would like to see District 3 apply for the next round, since he will be retired at that time. The county jail was inspected with no deficiencies noted. Sheriff Jump said he would like to do a coat of epoxy on the floor of the jail. He said he would have to house the inmates in another county for a few days due to the fumes. Old Business: Hensley said he was contacted by Larry Eddings last week regarding the light fixtures in the judge’s office. He said he told him to go ahead and replace the lights. Nick Lee said the roll-off dumpster at the fairbarn is full and needs to be scheduled for pickup. Clerk Loudermilk reminded the commissioners that today at 11:00 would be the ribbon cutting for the recycling containers to comply with the USDA grant. She added that members of the Choctaw Nation would be present. Nick Lee said last week there was a plumbing issue in the commissioners’ office. He said it was on the city’s side, but backed up in the office restroom. He said a vent pipe needs to be installed to prevent future issues. He said he will contact a plumber to have that looked at. Plans for a new fairbarn began in 1992 withthe writing of a grant tosecure funds for the firstphase.Everythingwithinthe walls of that facility

place to assemble, it hasalso had an economicimpactonthecommunity.According to the countytreasurer’s office, thehighest months of salestaxrevenueareDecemberandJanuary.Someofthatcan be linked to holidayshopping,butagreatdealcanbeattributedtopeoplecoming to Coalgateduringthosemonthswhenlarge livestockshowsarebeing conducted. Theybuygasandsnacksatourconvenience stores, eatin our restaurants, andshopinourgrocerystoresand specialty shops, thusleaving thousands ofdollarsinsalestax. In 1990, the state ofOklahomamandated thatevery county have anofficialfairboardmadeupofthreecitizensfromeachcounty commissioner’sdistrict. The first official CoalCounty Fair Board

Coalgate woman arrested on assault

charges A41-year-oldCoalgatewoman was arrestedduringtheearlymorninghoursofJanuary8aftera juvenile called 911regardingadomestic inprogress at a residenceonW.HanoverStreet. After arriving at theresidence and speakingwiththejuvenile,officerJacob Peebles enteredthehouseandfoundthesuspect, Stephanie AnnBee,sittingonthefloorand the alleged victim,a disabled male, lyingacrossthebed.Shewasyellingatthemanabouta vehicle, the officersaid. After refusing toobey Peebles’ repeatedorders to stand up andleavetheroom,shewasplacedinhandrestraintsand removed from thehouse. The man toldPeeblesthatBeehadhitbothhimandthechild. Beewasplacedunderarrest and transportedto the Coal Countyjail where she becamebelligerent and refusedto obey the jailer’sinstructions, accordingtotheofficer’sprobablecause affidavit. Thejailer then decided sheneeded to be placed inthe detox cell until shesoberedup. As Bee was beingplacedintothedetoxcellandthejaileraskedhertoremove her belongingsfrom her person, Beebegan removing herpants, Peebles said.Whenthejailertoldherto staydressed and justremove any belongingsfrom her pockets, sheturnedtowardthejailer,“getting into a fightingstance” and pushedthe jailer into Peebles.She was immediatelyrestrainedandplacedonabenchinsidethedetoxcell.
