Dear Fellow SMEs,

We are going through interesting times.

The SME ecosystem is witnessing defining changes on multiple fronts. It is testimony to

the hunger for growth of the Indian SME that in the midst of tumult on so many fronts

we’re driving even more change, advocating greater efficiencies and transparency and

literally demanding a far larger canvas.

In the last several months we have seen significant progress on debottlenecking

compliances. This is a point of pride for this Chamber, since we have been most vociferous

in demanding that the required number of compliances be substantially slashed.

There has also been significant movement on the trade and export finance front with a

variety of innovative products aimed at easing the liquidity crunch and the export risk

situation. Another significant development has been the start of success stories on the

SME Stock Exchanges, which we had strongly advocated as an SME Funding mechanism.

The future holds events to be anticipated. We have been pushing for the Reserve Bank of

India to address the liquidity crunch in the trade receivables situation and the resultant

crippling impact on SMEs who end up virtually financing larger companies, while being

themselves unable to grow. Some time ago the RBI issued licenses for the setting up of

Trade Receivables Discounting Systems or TReDS. These should be rolled out by the end

of the year and are eagerly awaited.

In the coming months we will strongly take up issues relating to skill pool creation for

SMEs as well as the creation of a more easily accessible digital business framework.

The beginning of 2016 has seen sustained activity starting with the India SME Banking

Conclave and the India SME Excellence Awards 2015 that celebrated innovation and

excellence amongst Indian SMEs. The inspiring stories of our award winners are also

covered in this issue. I am sure we can all learn from them.

Moving forward the Chamber will continue to make efforts to facilitate Indian SMEs. We

will also relentlessly push for positive policy and regulatory change as well as greater

industry support for the SME sector. I urge you to reach out to us with not only your

problems and issues but also your ideas and suggestions, so that everyone may benefit

from your thought process and learnings.

I end by extending my sincerest gratitude to our members, well-wishers, contributors,

guest speakers, event sponsors and of course our gracious advertisers.

SUCCESS STORY

Pumping Growth

An expert in pumping equipment, Hydro Prokav

Pumps (India) Pvt Ltd, offers a comprehensive

range of pumping solutions for varied industrial

applications. Founded in 2001, it is a leading

manufacturer and exporter of technically

advanced pumps and pumping equipment. For the

past two decades the company has undeniably

created a niche for itself in a highly competitive

environment. Dr. V Srinivasa Giri, CEO and

Director Marketing spoke to SMEC on the

journey so far and what SMEs today should be

doing right to prosper in a challenging business

environment.

Shri Ashishkumar Chauhan – Managing Director & CEO, BSE Ltd.

presenting the INDIA SME EXCELLENCE AWARD for Excellence in

“EXPORT - MANUFACTURING SECTOR" to Hydro Prokav Pumps

India Pvt. Ltd., Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Award received by Shri

Srinivasa Giri - Managing Director, Hydro Prokav Pumps India

Pvt. Ltd.

Tell us something about the

beginning

My friends, K S Bhat and T S Kuttan were

into the manufacture of filter presses since

1992. I had about 8 years of experience in

d e s i g n , a p p l i c a t i o n e n g i n e e r i n g ,

manufacturing and marketing of positive

displacement pumps. Manufacturing of

filter presses and progressive cavity

pumps have a natural relationship.

Looking at this opportunity we decided to

launch Hydro Prokav Pumps in 2001.

What has been the principal

encouragement behind your

business venture? Did you always

have in mind of getting into this

segment | sector?

After more than 8 years of exposure to

Progressive Cavity Pump selling in Asian

markets including Japan, Malaysia,

Singapore and Philippines, I wanted to

provide total industrial pumping solutions

to customers both in India and abroad. We

felt we could provide great products

backed by our experience.

What are the challenges that you

have faced in your journey so far?

Tell us about your high and low

points up till now.

Our Company started in mid-2001 and we

served only the domestic market until

2003. We began exporting to South East

Asian countries from 2003. We grew

through focus on marketing through

Buyer Seller Meets, Trade Delegations,

International Trade Fairs organised by

EEPC, ITPO, FIEO etc., which opened doors

in Europe, Australia and South America.

We initially gave only samples to qualify

ourselves in the North American market

and from 2005 to 2010, we consistently

exported to North America on just a

qualifying basis. By 2010, our products

were approved and accepted and we grew

in the US and Canadian markets. For the

past 3 consecutive years, we have had very

good growth in exports to North America.

Our Share of exports is currently at 70% of

our total turnover while the balance 30%

comes from the domestic market.

Explain 5 major factors which you

think helped you clinch a place at

the SME Excellence Awards?I think the following have helped us reach

here today:

Significant increase in exports to North

America – growing between 40% - 60%

a year. even during recession

 Steady sales growth

 Steady profit margins

 Improved product mix.

 Effective brand building

Upcoming SMEs surely look up to

organizations like yours as a

guiding force. What would be your

advice to them to enable them to

not only survive but also thrive?

Modernization is the key. Every SME

should modernize. Utilize the support of

the Chamber for promotional activities,

implement good Quality Systems and

focus branding internationally. Be globally

competitive. Our technique is to provide a

user- fr iendly design cater ing to

international standards at an affordable

cost. Adoption of modernized systems like

Lean Manufacturing Program, 5 S

Standards and ISO 9001 certification,

among others helps an SME to spread well

in the international market. Further

digitization will enhance business

opportunities in the global markets.

SUCCESS STORY

Since 1935 the Jhunjhunwala family was into raw cotton, yarn, fabrics and home textiles catering to domestic

as well as export markets. 5 generations down the line, Ankit Jhunjhunwala, took up the mantle to steer the

family-owned business in the right direction, pursuing growth in sync with the modern times. In an interview

with SME Connect, he puts in perspective the long years of hard work of the family and the way ahead for the

Company as it grows and matures

Weaving a Bright Future

Take us through the genesis of your enterprise. After having run as a family owned business for almost 67

years, the natural progression was to get into a more structure

form of business in line with the modern times. With this in

mind we converted into a Private Limited Company on

January 25, 2002. The aim was to eventually be a Star Export

House with a global reach. I had completed my graduation and

coming from a business family background, starting my own

business was a natural choice and dream as well.

What motivated you to start on your own and why

this specific sector | segment? The main motivation was to take the family business to

greater heights with the help of accumulated knowledge that

was inherited and modern business know-how. I also wanted

to be an employer rather than an employee and control my

own destiny and possess a satisfactory amount of financial

independence.

We are the fifth generation in the business of textiles.

Choosing the textile business was an obvious and natural

option for me. The family’s history with textiles also gave us

greater flexibility and negotiating power with suppliers and

buyers.

The road to success is never an easy one. How has

your been so far?Achieving a turnover of Rs 4.28 Crore from trading (Exports)

in the first year of operation (2002-03), we have withstood

numerous challenges before transforming into a

manufacturer-exporter and achieving a turnover of Rs 128

Crore in 2014-15. We are likely to cross Rs 150.00 Crore in

turnover during the current financial year.

The foremost challenge was to convert from a trading

company to a manufacturer-exporter as foreign buyers were

not keen on dealing with a trading company. Accordingly, we

set up a manufacturing unit with state-of-the-art-technology

to meet the quality standards of the products required by

foreign buyers. Today our products are certified by Control

Union Certifications for meeting Global Organic Standards.

We have been notified as a Star Export House since 2004,

which helped us expand across geographies. Today our team

of experienced and dedicated professionals follows stringent

quality control systems at all stages.

Talking about the most challenging period so far, the recession

of 2008-09 was a tough period. Turnover dipped to Rs 34

Crore and the Rupee appreciated against the Dollar

depressing margins. This was further complicated by the fact

that orders had dried up. That was a time we re-positioned

ourselves to focus more on domestic orders to help the

business sustain and sail through the difficult times.

What do you think are the reasons for your selection

at the India SME Excellence Awards?

Let me try and summarize some factors which have probably

gone in our favor here.

We are a consistently growing manufacturer-exporter

Company led by young entrepreneurs.

Strong business ethics and high value delivery are at our

core.

 We maintain contemporary technological standards.

We are a debt free company with a rising net-worth and one

that is a net forex earner.

We provide employment to over 350 families directly and to

another350 families indirectly.

What message would you want to give to other SMEs

who are trying to make it big?

Track and stay updated on your sector.

Take full advantage of government schemes and subsidies

and ensure complete compliance on regulatory side.

Stick to ethics, integrity, customer commitment.

 Choose the right buyers.

Motivate your team by staying completely committed to

them and they will deliver everything the business needs.

Connecting SMEs for Global Business Partnership

SUCCESS STORY

Where did all this start from?We began as a partnership firm way back

in 1990 in a small workshop in Wagle

Estate a distant suburb of Thane district

off Mumbai. It was a very small team 3

workers with me and the 500 sq ft

workshop was all that we had with us then.

What inspired you to start this

business? Was this sector a

predetermined choice? The whole idea was to develop suitable

import substitute fire-fighting products in

India. Back then the customs duty on these

products was enormous and this offered a

good opportunity to supply quality fire-

fighting equipment and systems that could

replace imported products. Many of the

fire-fighting products, which were not

manufactured here in India, had a huge

demand. We started with HD Fire’s first

product deluge valve. After having

attained approval in 1991 from the TAC

(Government of India), the first batch was

supplied to Reliance Industries facility in

Hazira, Gujarat. After that, the market for

HD products opened up in a big way.

What are the challenges that you

have faced in your journey so far?

Tell us about your high and low

points up till now.Business grew quickly in the earlier years

as we developed new products including

valves, water spray nozzles and sprinklers.

We then turned our attention to

manufacture products for the export

market; no doubt, there were roadblocks.

Your products had to obtain international

UL or FM approval to be accepted by

customers. I personally travelled to the UL

office in Chicago, USA in 1994 to apply for

approval. I had to stay there for 4 weeks to

discuss, understand and witness UL test

procedures for the first set of valves and

spray nozzles. It was not easy to study UL

standards and ask questions and

clarifications to the UL team out there,

particularly in the absence of internet and

email. However, our hard work did pay off

and in 1996 HD Fire became the first fire-

fighting equipment manufacturer in India

to get a UL approval for its products.

Tell us 5 points you consider

relevant for being nominated for

the SME Excellence AwardsWe believe our selection has been the

result of the following:

 Our world-class product offering

supplied successfully to over 56

countries

 our consistent (20% average) annual

growth in Revenue with sound

profitability for the last 5 years

the 30% + annual growth in exports

consecutively over the past 5 years

 o u r c o m p l e t e l y I n d i g e n o u s

manufacturing focusing on the ‘Made in

India’ tag with constant up-gradation of

product technology and internal

systems; and

a proper business succession strategy to

maximize the Company’s value and long

term growth.

What according to you should

budding SMEs do in order to not

just survive but also thrive in the

present market conditions? On one hand, SMEs have limited resources

and on the other multiple business

hurdles to tackle. What really needs to be

done is to develop good quality people

along with the Company because good

companies rely on good people. Keep a

long term vision of offering great products

or services to customers and be focused on

that while you strive for customer

satisfaction. Never undermine your

potential as an Indian company. Up-

gradation of systems, use of technology

and product development is necessary.

Have a well-defined mission and vision.

Follow these things and success will

automatically follow.

and step into the shoes of an entrepreneur. I started

my business in the year 2000 with a very small order

of Rs 5,000.

What has been the driving force in

s h a p i n g yo u a s a n i n d e p e n d e n t

businessperson? The sector that you have

chosen to be in is quite interesting. What

led you into this segment | sector?I was fortunate to be involved in some major projects during the

years of my service, such as the 750 keys Five Star Super Deluxe

Hotel, Grand Hyatt at Santacruz, which was one of the largest and

prior to that, in the construction of the ‘ICICI Bank Towers’ and

the National Stock Exchange in BKC.

After successful completion of these challenging projects, I was

offered a good position in the Operations Department at Hotel

Grand Hyatt. However, with my craving to deliver something

better to the industry with the optimal use of my knowledge and

skills, I thought setting up my own business was a prudent thing

to do.

My vision is to build an organization which delivers best products

and offers outstanding qualitative services. I aspire to be

associated with prestigious and landmark projects in the

industry and create benchmarks in the industry of Public Health

Engineering & Fire Security Management.

How has been the struggle for success so far? Would

you like to share the ups and downs of the way to

success? The road to success is never an easy one. Since inception of the

company my focus has been to deliver reliable and outstanding

services to our clients. Today, I can proudly say that we have set a

benchmark in the industry and we endeavor to continuously

improve and expand our roots in all parts of the nation.

Coming to your question, like any SME, collections and recovery

have been major issues for us too. We exist in a paradigm of low

liquidity and that problem percolates down the line. We have

suffered from this significantly and still do.

What according to you are the 5 major dynamics that

have helped you win a place at the India SME

Excellence Awards?I am a First Generation entrepreneur, born in a very poor family.

Since my father was a Mathadi labourer we hardly had any money

to get complete education. Fortunately, being a bright student, I

bagged the Government Polytechnic seat and was lucky enough

to get some donation from generous people to complete my

Diploma in Civil Engineering. My focus was more to earn money

than to get experience as I had to take care of my family of 5.

My urge towards gaining knowledge and making a difference in

the industry brought me success. I was able to build confidence

and trust in my clients through my dedication and my thirst

towards excellence.

Surviving in a competitive market and steadily growing in the

industry with updated knowledge and technology

Continuous growth in business till date with a clear visibility of

a bright future

Diversified scope of work in all segments of

construction industry that has helped us create

landmark projects and

A continuous quest for learning and development.

Survival is not enough; one has to thrive.

What do you recommend up-and-coming

SMEs should do in that direction,

especially in the present market conditions? We have to be very consistent, focused, enthusiastic, visionary,

passionate, energetic, hardworking and aggressive. Dream big

and walk an extra mile to achieve it. One should never be satisfied

and always remain hungry for achieving excellence. Sensing

opportunities and working continuously without rest is the key

to success.

SUCCESS STORY

How and when did you start your

business?

As a trend in most of the middle class

families, I selected being in a job as my career

path after my Engineering degree. It was

only in 1995, after completing 5 years of

service that I thought of being an

entrepreneur. As a matter of fact, it is rather

essential to have hands on experience prior

to starting any venture of your own.

What was the motivation of starting the

business? Also, mention the reason for

choosing the specific sector/segment?

Well, to be very honest with you, it was never

my dream to become an entrepreneur. The

surroundings and opportunities are to be

held responsible for my evolution as an

entrepreneur. Right from the beginning, one

thing was very clear and firm in my mind,

whatever I will do in my life, it will be with

utmost honesty and that I will always try to

improve myself and excel in the field that I

will be in. Electronics was my passion from

childhood and I was always very keen to have

updates in this field, of course, through my

very limited resources. So, I opted for DERE

as my educational stream.

Explain your journey so far, which were

the major ups and downs that you

witnessed in your business so far and

what are the learnings?

As I mentioned, I belong to middle class

family and every step that required financial

support was a challenge, be it education or

anything else. So starting something by

investing even a small amount was a big

challenge. We were staying at Talegaon

Dabhade where I completed my schooling

and after that took admission to Cusrow

Wadia College in Pune. As the local train

passes were very economical and convenient

too, I completed my DERE with daily up and

down as most of the Talegaonkar's do as a

ritual.

After successful completion of the course, I

joined a small electronics product

manufacturing firm where I could gain more

practical experience. It was a span of 4 years

from 1990 to 1994. I took leave for my

marriage and that break turned out to be

breakthrough in my life. My Husband,

Praviin, was instrumental and always kept

me motivated to start something on my own.

So, I revisited my employer and shared our

thought of starting something small. He

agreed and we started our business to

service (repairs and maintenance) of the

products that were getting manufactured in

the company.

With this small start-up, practically on a

mezzanine floor of 50 Sq ft, we eventually

reverse engineered PCB's for multinationals,

then undertook small Annual Maintenance

Contracts. Things began to move faster and

in a better manner when Praviin joined me

full time by resigning his job. We diversified

from electronics to hardcore electrical. As a

part of backward integration we started

manufacturing electrical panels. We have

acquired one Italian company recently which

is in to EMS (electronics manufacturing

services). I feel that the circle is getting

completed as we started with electronics.

Please explain five major 5 reasons in

details as to why you have been selected

for India SME Excellence Award?

We are into the 21st year of our

establishment and when I retrospect, the

journey seems to have been quite a fulfilling

one in many aspects, though we know there

is a lot more to come and every year it is a

new beginning. According to me, we are

growing in a very professional way and the

credit goes to the core values and purpose of

Orbittal. We have identified our 5 core

values and every Orbittal team member

follows it very religiously. These are:

Every team member is our asset and we do

not have any terminology like ‘employee’.

The commitment of Orbittal to its clients

regarding timely project completion,

quality in execution, honesty and

transparency to the project deliverables is

adhered in every project. This is the reason

we have about 60% of the turnover

through repeat clients.

Our presence is in every segment of the

Industry and multinational company's

have awarded us for safe and timely project

completions.

Our panels are complying to stringent

export quality norms and we are approved

for 70 KA short circuit test and the IP65 test

from CPRI Bhopal. New electronic

products we have launched and yet to

launch are very innovative and futuristic.

The credit goes to our R&D department,

though having in-house R&D team sounds

as a luxury to our scale, we believe that the

future is only for innovative products. In

short, I think our core values, core purpose,

team and Innovative quality products are

responsible for our success.

Your message to the struggling SMEs to

not only survive but thrive in the present

market condition.

I honestly feel that I am no authority to guide

but from my own experience I would like to

put forth a few insights which may be useful

to my SME friends. Push yourself from the

comfort zone to the discomfort zone; that is

the first step to success. Take calculated

risks. Be honest to your profession and

respect it. Always remember business is not

for the owner/promoter but it is for the

e n t i re te a m , d e p e n d e n t o n i t , s o

o w n e r / p r o m o t e r c a r r i e s m o r e

responsibility. We can overcome the difficult

phase in our business through introspection

of our mistakes, accepting them and

implementing mitigation plans accordingly.

A trustworthy core team with a common

vision makes business easy. Last but not the

least, being a part of society, we owe a lot to

the society and we have to repay it in

whichever possible way.

Orbittal Electromech Engineering Projects Pvt

Ltd, a professionally managed electrical

engineering firm specializes in medium and large

promoters; typical family oriented middle-class

office goers for the initial part of their life had a

definite wherewithal to create a niche for

themselves as entrepreneurs which they pursued

passionately. They narrate their story of what

made them click and how they sustained the ups

and downs of managing a business in a

SUCCESS STORY

Established in 2006, Maxim Tubes, within a short span of 8 years, has

been able to transform itself from a regional steel pipes and tubes

manufacturing company into a booming global business with a solid

reputation as well as a foothold in international markets. Yogesh Patel,

Managing Director, Maxim Tubes shares with us the mantras that have

enabled it to substantiate its position as a maximum solutions provider

within a very short span of time

Maximising Opportunities

Where are the roots of this business

that you are successfully running

today? We belong to a family involved in various

businesses such as edible spices, textiles, real

estate / construction, etc. Maxim Tubes was

started in October 2006 as a 100% privately

owned firm with a view to further diversify the

business portfolio.

What stimulated the businessman in

you and why did you choose to be in

this particular sector | segment? As I said, we come from a traditionally business

family. However, the sectors that we were

operating in were either having a limited

reach/growth or were areas where there was

fierce competition or where the market was

already an established one. This sector of stainless

steel tubes and pipes was such where, though

competition was prevailing, there was an immense

potential for growth; not only domestically but

more importantly globally as well. So to develop a

business with worldwide reach was the main

driving force for us.

Every success has its own sets of peaks

and troughs. What were yours in your

journey so far?We have been a self-funded company. We began

with a small plant at GIDC, Chhatral in

Gandhinagar district of Gujarat. However, the

production capacity was limited and the quality of

the output was not really suitable for international

markets. So, in 2010, after Ramkrushna my

younger brother joined in, we decided to come up

with a completely new facility which was

approximately 10 times bigger than the older

plant.

This second facility called Unit-2, which was built

completely new from grass root was a 100%

export oriented unit initially with 3 different halls

separately identified for production, cleaning and

quality check of products.

Today we have a total of 11 different halls at the

same place and the turnover has grown 50 times

since 2010 till now. The number of employees in

2010 was 62, which grew to more than 500 over

the years. So, to come up with huge export

oriented facility with bigger investments with an

aim to grow in the export market was a major

challenge which we successfully converted into an

opportunity.

What are the forces at work which

have enabled your selection for the

India SME Excellence Awards? Our Company’s Growth is enormous, its turnover

grew approximately 58% in 2012-13 as compared

to the previous year 2011-12 and it increased by

approximately 75% in 2013-14 as compared to

2012-13. At the moment, we are one of the largest

exporters in the 12 European countries in

Stainless Steel Pipes and Tubes category. We

began in 2006, came up with our first expansion in

the year 2010 and since then we have expanded a

lot in terms of capacity and quality improvements.

We have received awards from EEPC INDIA for

two years 2012-13 and 2013-14 consecutively

with a Gold trophy for Export Excellence and a

Silver trophy for Top Exporter in Medium

Enterprises at the National level.

We have created an outstanding workplace based

on a set of values that has led to a committed,

effective and motivated workforce. Our company

believes in growing along with its employees.

Maxim is being managed by one of the most

dynamic teams who believe in an ethical,

customer centric and profit

driven business. These I believe

are some of the factors that have

gone in our favour.

Can you spell out the way

forward that emerging

SMEs should follow in

order to not just survive

but thrive in the present

market conditions? In modern times, success of any

business solely depends on

identifying right opportunities at

right times. If you are an

entrepreneur at heart, follow the

basic idea of starting your

business, no matter what!

Also for any manufacturing unit, it

is very important to be consistent

in every aspect of making,

checking and improving products

and for that to build the right team

at every level.

However, considering our story,

we believe that to be successful, it

is very important for promoters

and their team to market their

products with the right approach

and of course with a good pricing

strategy. Most importantly, build a

brand which is profit making in

every condition.

SUCCESS STORY

How and where did you begin this journey?Micro Plastics was started in the year 2005. I had worked for

Injection Moulding companies in my professional career and in 2005,

I decided to set up my own company.

List down the factors that have pushed you into

being on your own. Did you always want to be in this

sector | segment?I decided to start my own firm in 2005. Plastics was the obvious

choice because of my past experience. But I soon realized that the

firm can’t remain just a component manufacturer. I knew that we’d

have to graduate to contract manufacturing and hence changed our

strategy to “ One Stop Solution” to get an edge in the market.

Take us through the best and the worst part of your

journey so far.We came across a model hobby company in the UK that was looking

for partners in India as a viable option to China. Normally, you don’t

associate toys and model kits with India at that level. It took us two

years to convince them that these products could be manufactured

by us in India. The product had our logo together with the ‘Made In

India’ tag. This was a great opportunity and we tasted good success.

This also paved the way for our company to get into other segments

such as healthcare, toys, telecom, etc.

What are the 5 influences that have enabled your

win at the India SME Excellence Awards? The basic factors that have probably fallen in place for us are our

strengths and USPs, our global footprint, a great deal of family

support and of course luck.

Although we are primarily a plastic injection moulding company, we

also provide our clients total solutions ranging from product design

to manufacturing. Our innovativeness, adaptability and

comprehensive quality management practices have been our major

strengths. We started out as an engineering company but being quick

learners we graduated to making model kits, toys and diversified into

metals and castings, decorations and high-volume assemblies.

What I mean by a global footprint is that, we started out as a 100%

Export Oriented Unit with a back-up tool maintenance facility and

assembly lines. Today, MPPL has 100 machines and 70% of our

products are exported to North America, Europe, Asia, UK and China.

Family support plays a big role when you are venturing out on your

own. The support of my wife has been very crucial to my success so

far. When I wanted to turn into an entrepreneur after becoming a

father, she allowed me to take that risk. She had immense confidence

in me, allowed me to pursue my dreams and achieve my goals. I also

believe that luck makes a big difference.

By luck, I mean, being at the right location, having an understanding

of the geography of that location, having the right connections and

the correct knowledge. All these factors lead to success.

What is your message to the SMEs that are still in a

nascent stage of development?

We give a lot of importance to human values and team spirit within

the organisation. For an entrepreneur to grow, he needs to have self-

belief, passion, commitment and the ability to strategise smartly.

Apart from these, he must ensure the support of his family, friends,

employees, partners and bankers in his business plans.
