Introduction to CNG

Natural gas compressed to 1% of it’s volume at normal condition give CNG

Formed from dead plants and animals due to intense heat and pressure

Methane as primary component with negligible amount of CO2, H2S and N2.

Properties of CNG 90% methane Self ignition temperature= 540 C Adiabatic flame temperature= 1900

C 5 to 15 % conc. in air to burn Relative density= 0.61 Octane number= 127 Calorific value= 38 MJ per cubic

comparatively cheaper

Not yet produced in large scale due to some major challenges like:

a) Expensive CNG kit and need of approval

b) Large fuel tank requirement and space adjustment problem in bike

Main problem is related to the tank

. So main focus has to been made in solving the problem related to the tank.

Cylindrical tank with diameter=40cm and length= 62 cm

Adjustable size in bike

Stores cng that can give same work output as petrol tank of 15 ltr capacity

Material to make the tank Rubber

membrane wrapped with carbon fiber and coated with epoxy

Light and strong but expensive

To reduce cost steel or aluminum can be used but they are heavy

a) Isentropic compression

b) Heat addition at constant volume

c) Isentropic expansion

d) Heat rejection at constant volume

of 200 km and 3.5 liter petrol tank
