Each year the Poetry Rivals team go above and beyond to make each finalist’s slam experience the best it can be. From the moment the finalists arrive they will be made to feel at home, they will be greeted by a welcoming team member and given a pack with all they need to help them with their performance. From tips on how to perform, (which is handy when feeling nervous or performing for the first time) to money towards their travel expenses.

The next step will be to take a seat with the other finalists, friends and family. Mark Grist will take to the stage to start the slam and give a brief chat about the schedule of the day and introduce the judges. The judges vary each year but we have never failed to deliver a line-up of recognised faces in the performance poetry world (see below for past judges).

Each finalist will take to the stage and perform their poem how they see fit - we have had some full on performances from costumes and props being used to a simple reading. However you wish to express yourself we will do our best to accommodate your requests.

The runners-up and winner will be announced after all attending finalists have performed and a short interval for the judges to decide on the winner.

Mark Grist (host) – Internet sensation, well respected poet, spoken word artist, producer of ‘Rogue Teacher’ show taken to Edinburgh Fringe Festival and one half of Dead Poets.

Tim Clare – Award-winning author, stand-up poet, musi-cian and producer of ‘How To Be A Leader’ show which went on to win Brighton Fringe Best Show award.

Mixy – One half of Dead Poets performing act, hip-hop artist and claimed the titles of ‘Peterborough Poet Laureate’ ‘Speakeasy Slam Champ’ and ‘King of The Mic’.
