THIS WEEK IN THE PARISH

“For my flesh is real food, and my blood real drink.”

Introduction Today we celebrate a great feast of the Church, and a great mystery. It is a mystery we celebrate every time we come to Mass, the mystery that we are the body of Christ here, because we are fed by Jesus’ own body and blood in the Eucharist.

Today’s Readings

First Reading: Deuteronomy 8:2-3, 14-16 The people of Israel are reminded that they know who God is through their learning to trust God in the wilderness. It was here that God reached their “inmost heart” and here that the Lord provided for all their needs.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 10:16-17 The Corinthians were a troubled and divided community. Here Paul reminds them that all who share in the body and blood of Christ are, in him, one body.

Gospel: John 6:51-58 Jesus scandalises his hearers, telling them that he gives his body to be their food. He insists upon it: eating and drinking of Christ’s flesh and blood draws us into his life, and eternal life with the Father.

Prayers for those who are ill. Laarni Astorga, Ed Boshcoff, June Bowes, Terry Campbell, Agnes Dummer, Gosia Hukowski, Edmee Kearney, Mary Mason, Ben Perri, Lawrence Petersen, Marlene Raynor, Heather Sluchinski and Tillie Wilson.

Prayers for the deceased. You asked to remember in prayer those recently deceased:- Jack Schotel

Bishop-elect Installation Please note that the Mass to celebrate the Installation of Most Reverend Gary Gordon as Bishop of Victoria will be held on Thursday, August 28, 2014 at 7 pm at St. Andrew’s Cathedral, 740 View Street in Victoria. We hope to have parishioners and representatives from all parts of our Diocese present to welcome our new Shepherd, and additional information regarding availability of tickets will be available in the near future. ———————–———————————————————–--- Outdoor Feast of Saint Clare All are invited to join the Poor Clare Sisters for the outdoor Feast of St. Clare on Monday, August 11th at St. Clare's Monastery, 2359 Calais Rd, Duncan, BC. This year our Eucharistic celebration will also include the Solemn Profession of Vows of Sr. Monique Simpson, OSC. Fr. Dennis Vavrek OFM, Provincial Minister of the Friars of Western Canada will be the presider. Eucharist begins at 10 am and afterwards refreshments on the Monastery grounds will continue the celebration. Please mark your calendars and come join with the sisters on this great occasion. We hope to see you many of you!

Fr Sig Lajoie, OFM 10th Death Anniversary Friday, June 27, 2014, is Fr. Sig’s 10th Death Anniversary. Fr. Sig was the pastor of this parish from 1984 to 2004. A special mass will be celebrated during that weekend. Do mark your calendars now, as there are other activities planned to commemorate his memorial. Ways to honour Fr. Sig, related to his involvement in social justice, are to offer information about the Letter Writing Group that began at Sacred Heart Parish, and the offer of a letter to sign in support of a Christian woman who has been sentenced to death in Sudan because she is a Christian. Fr. Sig, being an environmentalist and an ardent garden lover, we will, in his honour, have a Ground Cleaning and Planting Project on Satturday, June 28, from 9:00am to 12 noon. We are asking for all parishioners’ participation, including the different ministries. We will conclude this meaningful project with an outdoor BBQ at 12noon, please mark your calendars and join us to make all these work. There is a sign-up sheet in the foyer of the church.

Children’s Faith Formation / Sacramental Preparation. Registration is now on. This ministry is for all children ages 4 to grade 7, including those wanting to prepare for the Sacraments of 1st Communion / Confirmation. The program runs from September through to April, from 11:00am—12:00noon in the Parish Hall. Please email: Miriam Podmoroff @ [email protected] for details.

June 26th – The Letter Writing Group originated as a Development and Peace initiative at Sacred Heart Parish about 30 years ago. Lois Marcoux, Aideen Lydon Delia McGee and Doran Doyle were among the early participants. What better way to acknowledge our solidarity with all our brothers and sisters than to concern ourselves with the plight of those who are persecuted for their faith and their work in advancing human rights ! The Group is often part of larger campaigns to request the release of a prisoner of conscience or to ask for protection for one threatened or tortured. The Group is still going strong, and meets every first Monday of the month at the Pastoral Centre. Support comes from a number of parishes in the Diocese and is greatly appreciated, especially since the cost of postage has gone up to $2.50 for an overseas letter. ————————————————————————–———- The St. Patrick`s CWL fall Good Used Clothing Sale will be held on Friday and Saturday Oct 3 and 4 9:30 - 2:00pm and the fall Bazaar will be held on Saturday Oct 4. 9:30 -2:00pm. A raffle prize can be a new item over $20 or cash (any amount, however small). Cash donations are collected and redistributed as larger cash prizes. Gaming Commission as part of our license application by early July, and are printed on the tickets. Once the application is submitted it cannot be altered. To donate a prize, pick up the prize donation form on the table in the foyer of the church, and return it to the parish office or to either of the raffle coordinators by July 6.
