Closed Captioning Tricks in Discoverystreaming(this process is not linear, so it is suggested that you read both pages first )

If a video is available with closed captions it will have a “cc” icon located below the description of the video.

You have the option to search for closed captioned videos by going into the “Advanced Search” in the top DE menu bar, and selecting the appropriate option(s).

You will see this window just below the video when you’ve opened your selection from the search results.

Closed captioning is not always available in full screen when the Embedded Player is being used.

In some cases, if you select the “Stand-Alone” option, it may allow closed captions in full screen view.

When you make your selection, please wait for the screen to refresh.

Downloading Video and Closed Caption Files1. Create a folder for downloaded files on desktop or preferred location.2. Login to discoverystreaming through IDEAL.

3. Save the video file into the folder created on the desktop. Use the little disk (or “bus” ) icon.4. Save the Closed Caption file in the same folder by right-clicking on the

“CC” icon next to the video and “Save Target As” to save to the same folder.

Many video segment files are named with an .asf extension. The closed caption file will have an .smi extension.

Next, in your saved folder, right click on each of the files to rename them, which will eliminate the file extensions .asf and .smi (this is important!).

Your files will no longer have the file extension visible. Open the video file (it will be the larger file) and the caption should open with the segment in Windows Media (after you have completed the changes below.) Success!

Important: see below for the settings you must change in Windows Media “Enable Closed Captions in Windows Media Player”

Enable Closed Captions in Windows Media Player1. Open Windows Media Player by selecting Start > Programs > Windows Media Player2. Select Play > Captions and Subtitles3. Select On If Available.4. (Additional step for Windows Media Player 10 or 11): Select Tools > Captions and Subtitles. Then click the Security tab and check the box next to “Show local captions when present”5. Close and reopen the Windows Media Player
