Why should you caption videos? The most obvious reason is to provide people with hearing difficulties/disabilities the ability to engage with the video content, otherwise that video won’t be much use to them.

In 2010 Google worked with YouTube to embed their automatic translation software, to provide automatic captioning on YouTube videos, great!

But this is not entirely accurate!

Take a look at a video featuring Ken Robinson from a TED talk recently.

But is captioning just to help people with hearing issues to engage with the video content?

No, as Wyant explains: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=IYMhNHuP2Zk

1. Upload your video to YouTube

2. Visit the location of the video on YouTube

3. Then you will see a number of icons below the video, you will need to click on the CC icon – 5th icon along

4. This will take you to the captions editor

you are happy, press the ‘Sync’ button and wait for processing.

8. Then you should be able to re-visit the video and play it back with your captions, easy!

Other forms of captioning There are however numerous online video website for uploading video content and only some of these enable you to caption the videos, So how do you caption them?

You can use a website called Amara: http://www.amara.org/en/

This enables you to add a video from Vimeo for example and caption it using their free tools.

Other ways are to utilise the desktop services depending on what program you used to edit and produce the video, Camtasia has captioning options and most professional video programs can allow you to add a closed captioning data file.

TIP: Go to http://www.youtube.com/account - then Playback and check the box ‘Show automatic captions by speech recognition (when available)’ – this will display the option to view captions automatically.
