First Reading: Book Introduction (Monday)
Teacher:Today I am going to read you a book called My Lucky Day. In this story we are going to meet a fox and a pig (point to the cover). Here is a picture of the pig and fox. I wonder why the pig isn’t afraid of the fox. Do you think the fox and pig are friends? Let’s look at the back (show picture on the back). The fox looks so tired. What do you think made him so tired? Let’s see if we can find out why the fox looks tired.
During this first reading, use a great amount of expression and model analytic thinking but only three or four times throughout the story. Vocabulary words should be pointed out in a non-verbal way. Students should simply be engaged and enjoying the story the first time through while receiving the meaning of the story.
After reading the first time, ask the students a why question that requires them to refer to the text or recall information from the story while also accessing their prior knowledge. An example would be “Why do you think pig showed up at Fox’s house? Do you think he really was looking for rabbit?”

Second Reading (Wednesday)
Recap with students about the book and have them recall a few parts of the story.
Teacher: The other day we read this book and you might remember that it is about a pig and a fox. Who remembers what the pig did at the beginning of the story? Did fox ever get to eat pig?
During this read more pauses will be taken to highlight vocabulary and give verbal definitions for the words. Students can also act out or demonstrate vocabulary words. Ask more of the comprehension questions as you are reading while also modeling the thinking skills that your students should be using. Examples of these questions are listed at the beginning of this lesson.
At the end of the second reading, ask another question. This question needs to require students to explain their answer.
Teacher: What do you think would have happened if fox decided not to give pig a bath? What do you think bear will do?

Third Reading (Friday)
During this introduction, review the story but allow student to fill in missing information or details from the story.
Teacher: We have read this story a couple of times now. Who knows what the title is? What details on the cover show important parts of the story?
This reading should have the analytical questioning component but without over doing it. This final read should be similar to the first read with some recapping and questioning throughout the book.
