Vocabulary Detective Solve the Mystery of the Word’s Meaning

Step 1: READ Copy the sentence that contains the new vocabulary word in the box.

Step 2: WRITE Write new vocabulary word in the box.

Step 3: IDENTIFY What “part of speech” is the new word? (hint: noun, verb, adjective, adverb…) Write it in the box.

Step 4: DEDUCE Can you tell from the clues in before and after the sentence what the new word means? Write your guess in the box.

Step 5: LOOK IT UP Grab your dictionary. Write the definition below, then close your eyes and try to spell the word from memory out loud.

Step 6: PARAPHRASE Think about the definition, and put it in your own words. Write your version in the box.

Step 8: COMPOSE Write a sentence using your new vocabulary word.

Step 8: DRAW Imagine the new word in your mind. Turn this paper over, and draw a picture illustrating the meaning of the word (the crazier the better!)
