    43RD ANNUAL ROUND LAKE

ANTIQUES FESTIVALROUND LAKE The 43rd an-nual Round Lake Antiques Festival to benefit the Round Lake Library will be held Sat-urday, June 27th and Sun-day, June 28th. The Festival is open, rain or shine, both days from 9am to 5pm. The event is held on the greens of the historic Village of Round Lake. This year as many as 120 vendors sell-ing antiques of all kinds are expected to bring their items to Round Lake. Food vendors will be serving all day to add to the festival atmosphere. The festival, sponsored by the Womans Round Lake Improvement Society each year, raises money to benefit the Round Lake Library, which has been serving the Malta area since 1897. This years festival pro-moter is Michael Green who has been managing the Fair-ground Shows at the Wash-ington County Fairgrounds for many years. The Village of Round Lake and the festival are easily reached by taking Exit 11 of the Adirondack Northway and going east about mile.

THE JOYFUL NOISE, WE ARE ONE

CAPITAL DISTRICT The Joyful Noise was a con-temporary Christian music ministry well known in the Capital District region and beyond, during the years of 1969-1993. The Joyful Noise was a large group of young people, led spiritu-ally and musically by Mr. Bill Womer. The Joyful Noise was the core of what would later evolve into Christian Mu-sic Ministries. The positive side of social media, as well as the unfortunate passing of key members, has stirred interest in a reunion of The Joyful Noise, with the rec-ognition, that still, We are One. A reunion is planned for October 10, 2015 focused on reuniting and catching up. The reunion will culmi-nate with a barbeque dinner and an evening Praise and Worship service at Bethle-hem Lutheran Church. Many of the songs spanning three decades when young lives were forever impacted by this experience will be sung together again. We will also be including all the parents and family members in the Sat-urday night service who supported each of us during our JN years. During these early planning stages we are interested in help locating former members, and identifying folks to assist on various committees that have been formed. Please visit the Facebook page for Christian Music Ministries if you are a former member and want to connect, or contact us at [email protected]

GET THE SCOOP ON POOL SANITIZERSMany homeowners enjoy the convenience and recreational value of having a pool in their backyards. Pools can be a great spot to gather on warm days, often serving as the center-piece of summer recreation.

Pools require substantial upkeep to function properly and be safe for swimming. The right combination of factors are needed to maintain a proper water balance to prevent skin and eye irritation as well as to ensure the water is clean. Sani-tizers play a significant role in ensuring that safety.

Various sanitizers are on the market, although people are most familiar with chlorine-based sanitizers. The goal of a sanitizer is to prevent the growth of bacteria and algae in pool water. Sanitizers also will inhibit the growth of viruses and other organic contaminants.

First-time homeowners who have never had a pool may find it challenging to choose a sanitizer that will work for them. Each sanitizer has its share of pros and cons, but many home-owners hope to find one that is both cost-effective and con-venient. The following are some of the sanitizers to consider.

Liquid chlorine: Sodium hypochlorite, also known as bleach, is a common pool sanitizer. Liquid chlorine does not have any additives and will not affect pool water in any other way ex-

cept for providing sanitation. Liquid chlorine can be cumber-some to store and splashing the product while adding it to the water can damage clothing.

Cal-hypo: Calcium hypochlorite is another sanitizing option for pools. It is usually sold in granular form because pucks

or sticks will break down too quickly in chlorine feeders. Cal-hypo is often an unstabilized form of chlorine, which means it does not have a stabilizing chemical mixed with it to prevent chlorine burn-off from the sun. Depending on your needs, unstabi-lized chlorine can be an asset or a detriment.

Dichlor and trichlor: Dichloro-s-triazinetrione and trichloro-s-triazinetri-one are two different sta-bilized chlorine sources. They are mixed with a substance called cyanuric

acid, which helps prevent the quick usage of chlorine in out-door pools. Sunlight can reduce the efficacy of chlorine, and this stabilizer will help buffer that effect. Since these chlorine sources typically come in pucks or tablets, they can be placed in feeders and will deliver consistent chlorine without daily maintenance. Trichlor has one of the highest levels of avail-able chlorine of all pool sanitizers. However, one disadvan-tage is that if the stabilizer levels build up too much in the pool, you will require even more chlorine to combat this ef-fect, sometimes creating a cycle of chlorine ineffectiveness.

Salt: Salt-cell pools use a process of electrolysis to extract chlorine from the salt added to the specialized equipment, thus sanitizing the pool automatically. Some people prefer salt because it seems more natural and requires less main-tenance.

Bromine: Bromine is similar to chlorine. While the byprod-ucts of chlorine do not benefit pool water, bromine byprod-ucts can continue to sanitize the water, making it last longer than chlorine. Bromine can be more expensive than chlorine, which might deter homeowners looking for the most cost-effective pool sanitizer.

Pool water chemistry can be a complex process. But home-owners have many options at their disposal when it comes time to choose the right sanitizer.

Sanitizers keep pool water safe for all swimmers.

GARDENING POINTERS FOR NOVICESPeople have many reasons for growing gardens, and some of the most popular gardens are plots designated for cultivating herbs and vegetables. Fresh produce at the ready is a great benefit of having a home garden, which also allows homeown-ers to exercise full control over which products to use to grow robust, healthy vegetables.

Novice gardeners may not know where to begin when it comes to planting their first vegetable gardens, and such gardeners can benefit by starting small. You may want to begin by grow-ing plants in containers so they are more manageable and can be moved as you discover which areas of your property pro-vide the best growing conditions.

Begin with one or two types of vegetables. Tomatoes, cucum-bers and certain squashes are popular starter plants, as they are relatively hardy. Select only a few plants so you are not overwhelmed with the level of care required to maintain your garden.

Some gardeners prefer to start plants from seeds, but this will require more time and a greater commitment with regard to maintenance and planting. When just starting out, experiment with small plants that are established and already have a good root system.

Consult with your local gardening center for more suggestions, such as which soil amendments to use. Plants may require a certain soil pH that can be adjusted for optimal plant growth.

    OF CREDIT

Apply online at saratoganational.com or call us today at 583-3114

Home Equity Line of Credit, no closing costs, provided a minimum advance of $10,000 is taken at closing. Advances may be taken either by using standard Home Equity Line checks provided by the Bank or by signing a separate Installment Loan Agreement(s) with its own home equity loan rate(s) and term(s). Minimum advance by the installment loan method is $5,000 with a maximum of four outstanding loans at any time. As principal is repaid on the installment loan(s) advance(s), the available credit on the line increases by an equal amount. 2.99% APR for the first 3 years of the home equity agreement will be charged on new lines with advance(s) taken by writing a Home Equity Line check. This 2.99% interest offer does not apply if the loan purpose is to refi-nance an existing Saratoga National mortgage or home equity balance. At conclusion of the 3 year introductory fixed rate period, APR will be calculated based on the highest Prime Rate published in the Wall Street Journal. WSJ Prime Rate is presently 3.25% as of 12/16/08. For combo lines of $25,000 or more the annual percentage for advances taken by check will be prime +.25%, for lines less than $25,000, the annual percentage rate is prime +.75%. Rates on check advances are subject to quarterly adjustment throughout the term of loan and will not exceed a maximum of 14.95% APR. There is no minimum rate. This offer applies to consumer lines of $250,000 or less. Minimum payment of $100 on check advances may apply. Payments may be made through a Saratoga National checking or savings account. For a typical installment loan advance of $25,000 over 10 years, your monthly payment would be approximately $253.12, assuming an automatic payment from a Saratoga National checking or savings account and an APR of 4.00%. If the home equity agreement is cancelled for any reason within 2 years from closing date, the amount of closing costs and mortgage tax the Bank pays at closing (approximately $705 for a typical $25,000 line), will be added to payoff amount owed. Maximum approved line is 80% of appraised value of house minus existing first mortgage balance, if any. If the Bank determines Title Insurance is necessary, cost will be borne by customer. Customer required to maintain property insurance. All or part of Home Equity Interest may be tax deductible. Please consult with your tax advisor concerning your personal tax situation. EXPAND DOWNSTAIRS TO MAXIMIZE SPACE AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY

(MS) With home prices on the rise, finishing a basement is the latest trend in real estate. More and more homeowners are enjoying the perks of additional living space, a reduction in heating and cooling costs, a healthier home, and, if done right, a more desirable home when selling.

A finished basement can be used for virtually anything and may offer multipurpose spaces the entire family can enjoy. Common uses include additional storage or a media room, craft room, guest suite, workshop, or gym. A little extra room can give a growing family space to breathe and provide con-venience for everyday life.

An unfinished basement can be a source of energy loss. By finishing your basement, you can expect to see savings on your heating and cooling costs. Industry experts recommend finish-ing the space with the proper framing, insulation and vapor barrier to guarantee a cozy and inviting space. Insulation plays a key role in the comfort of your newly remodeled space and although its hidden within your walls, insulation will make sure your space stays cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Retailers suggest using a stone wool insulation, such as ROXUL. This recommendation is also fire and water repellent and is resistant to mold, mildew, rot and bacterial growth making your space healthy and safe.

An added benefit to expanding downstairs with a finished basement is the instant market-ability. Many buyers now demand a well-finished basement to give them extra space. Al-though you may not immediately recoup the financial costs prior to selling, you will stand out among the rest.

INEXPENSIVE WAYS TO BOOST A HOMES

CURB APPEALCurb appeal can go a long way toward making a home

more attractive to its inhabitants as well as prospective buy-ers once the house is put on the market. Improving curb ap-peal is a goal for many homeowners, and while many proj-ects aimed at making homes more aesthetically appealing can be costly, there are ways for cost-conscious homeowners to improve their properties without breaking the bank.

Put your green thumb to use. A well-maintained land-scape can dramatically improve a homes curb appeal. Pay attention to the plants, shrubs and trees throughout your property, watering them during periods of little rainfall and trimming them when necessary so your lawn does not look like an overgrown, neglected suburban jungle. Professional landscaping services can help you maintain your property, but even if your budget does not allow for such an expense, you can still make sure your landscape adds to your homes appeal by keeping a watchful eye on the property and ad-dressing any issues that arise. Maintain your lawn through the colder months of the year as well, making sure no one walks on the grass when frost has settled, as doing so can produce dead spots throughout the lawn.

Redo your front door. While their eyes may initially be drawn to a well-manicured lawn, prospective buyers will eventually find their way to the front door. If your door is especially old, consider replacing it. If your budget does not allow for such an expense, you can still give your homes front entrance an entirely new look by installing some inexpensive molding around the door before giving the door a fresh coat of paint. Molding around the front door can make an entrance more impressive, while a new coat of paint can make a home feel

    warmer and more vibrant.

Plant flowers. Another in-expensive way to make a home more appealing is to plant some colorful flowers around the property. Line walkways with flowers na-tive to your region, as such plants will last longer than exotic alternatives that may not be capable of adapting to the local climate. In ad-dition to lining walkways, hang window boxes filled with colorful flowers or

plants outside naked windows. Doing so can make windows seem larger and add some color to your homes exterior.

Another creative way to make use of colorful flowers is to place a few planters at the foot of your driveway and paint-ing the numbers of your address on the planters. This can be both effortless and inexpensive, but it can instantly make a home more inviting to prospective buyers.

Spotlight certain parts of your property. Many homeowners focus on improving the curb appeal of their property during the daytime hours, but you can take steps to make a home more appealing at night as well. Solar spotlights placed

around trees and other attractive features in your yard can shed light on those areas of your property youre most proud of, even after the sun has gone down. Solar spotlights wont add to your energy bill, as they are powered by the sun, and they can make certain accents on your property stand out at night.

Improving curb appeal may sound like a significant under-taking, but there are many ways budget-conscious home-owners can make their homes exterior more appealing with-out going broke.

Maintaining plant life on a property wont cost h o m e o w n -ers a lot of money, but such an effort can add sub-stantial curb appeal to a home.

ADD COLOR TO CUSTOMIZE YOUR HOME'S INTERIORS(StatePoint) In a world where home dcor options can often seem bland, you may be wonder-ing how to colorfully customize interior spaces to fit your lifestyle and speak to your personal-ity. Luckily, youre not alone.

A good 25 to 30 percent of polled online shoppers are interested in customizing products, ac-cording to a consumer study by Bain & Company. This demand is driving innovation across in-dustries, including home interior design, which is adding new color palates to their offerings.

So for those seeking to buck the cookie cutter trends seen in neighbors homes, try creating a DIY look in yours with the addition of bright, bold colors.

Here are a few design tips to add personality and flair to your home:

    Seek Inspiration

Many design resources are right at your fingertips. Visual social media applications, such as Pinterest and Instagram, can help you envision how different elements, colors and furnishings may look in your own spaces -- serving as inspiration for dcor projects and upgrades.

Also, seek out new online tools that can help you execute your plan. For example a free Web-based application, Splash by Amerock, offers a new interactive design and shopping experi-ence by allowing users to truly customize hardware for cabinets and furniture. The interactive site and first-of-its-kind product line allows you to test various cool colors and shapes of cabi-netry hardware and view the different looks on different style and color cabinets.

From kitchens and bathrooms to bedrooms and living areas, you can make your rooms pop with bold colors, truly customizing a room without much effort. The no risk decorating system and online ordering process makes it easy to wield your decorating prowess. To view how fresh, fun colors may look in your home, visit www.SplashbyAmerock.com

    Bursts of Color

A great new trend for a bold, bright look is the addition of bursts of color. You can eliminate the need for a complete overhaul while making a statement. For example, paint just one ac-cent wall in your kitchen, or add a large colorful pillow or throw to your living room set.

Another great way to achieve color is to replace the standard hardware on your cabinets and furniture with custom options. Hardware is easy to swap out and can give your pieces a fun, fresh makeover at a much lower cost and hassle than a replacement.

This update is so easy to make you can change hard-ware as often as the sea-sons, if you are so inclined. POWER TOOL SAFETY TIPS

Power tools can dramatically reduce the time it takes to complete home improve-ment projects. Professional contractors regularly rely on power tools for cutting and sanding, and many do-it-yourself renovators follow suit and invest in power tools to help get the job done. But power tools, in spite of their usefulness, are not without risk. According to the Work Safe Center, power tool in-juries account for as many as 400,000 emergency room

visits in the United States each year. Power nailers, chain saws and table saws account for the greatest number of injuries. Keeping safe is of the utmost priority when using power tools. Heres how:

Read all manufacturers instructions and guidelines before use.

Keep your tools clean and in proper operating condition.

Use the right tool for the job.

Always wear eye protection, such as safety glasses or goggles.

Wear standard cotton or leather work gloves to protect hands.

Consider the use of earplugs or earmu s with loud power tools.

Dont use power tools in proximity to fl ammable vapors, dust or construction materials.

Always check that wires are kept away from blades.

Maintain a tight grip on a tool.

Do not overreach when using tools, and maintain balance.

Pay attention when working with any power tool.

Only use attachments specifi cally recommended for the power tools and ensure proper installation.

Unplug all power tools during breaks and anytime when tools are not in use.

    Routinely inspect tools for damage.

Keep tools stored in secure locations when not in use.

TOP 4 SIGNS YOU NEED TO CALL A PEST PROFESSIONAL

(NewsUSA) - When pests are discovered, it may be tempting for homeowners to employ DIY methods to first attempt to deal with pest infestations themselves.

However, depending on the type of pest and size of the in-festation, there are times when immediately calling in a pest professional is vital to protecting health and property -- and could end up saving money in the long-run.

According to the National Pest Management Asso-ciation (NPMA), there are certain signs homeowners should look for that could indicate the presence of an infestation that should be dealt with promptly by a pest professional:

    1. Droppings. Any droppings found in undisturbed areas of the home could indicate the presence of rodents. These droppings are a serious health risk and can spread dis-eases and contaminate food sources. People often mistaken-ly believe they only have one or two rodents present in their home; in reality, however, mice have high reproduction rates that can quickly escalate to large infestations.

    2. Home Pest Sightings. If pests are spotted in the home, even if it's just a couple or they only appear sporadi-cally, it could indicate the development of a more serious infestation. In the warmer months, this is especially true for stinging insects. If hornets or wasps are showing up indoors on a regular basis, there may be a nest somewhere inside or around the home. Removal of stinging insect nests is a dan-gerous job that should always be left to the professionals.

    3. Mattress Markings. If small reddish brown spots are found on mattresses, upholstery or walls, it could indicate a bed bug infestation -- especially when paired with red, itchy welts, most notably on the legs and arms. These bugs are no-

toriously difficult to get rid of, and a pest professional should be called as soon as possible to assess and treat the situation.

    4. Mud Tubes. Some termites build distinctive mud tubes that are frequently found near a home's foundation. Termites are known as "silent destroyers" because their con-stant gnawing can go unnoticed until significant structural damage to the home occurs. If mud tubes are discovered, homeowners should immediately call a pest professional be-fore further structural damage occurs.

If any of these severe pest infestation signs is dis-covered, homeowners should contact a pest management professional immediately. For additional information and prevention tips, visit www.pestworld.org.

DID YOU KNOW?Dining outdoors when the weather is warm can make for a pleasant change of pace. While certain aspects of eating outside can be enticing, Mother Nature can sometimes com-plicate the experience. Wind is one challenge to dining out-

side, as diners may find themselves chasing paper napkins or airborne plastic cups on windy afternoons or evenings. To safeguard against the wind, rely on reusable, heavy plastic items that are less likely to blow away in the wind. Also, keep

tablecloths in place with a few supplies. Use a grommet-making tool to punch holes into the tablecloth and attach plastic or metal grommets. Place the table-

cloth on the table and slip a thin bungee cord fastener to a grommet on the underside of the table. Stretch the cord across to a grommet on the other side of the tablecloth and secure. Two or three sets of grommets and bungee cords may be all you need to keep the tablecloth in place and enjoy an interruption-free meal outside.

THE MANY BENEFITS OF HIRING A PROFESSIONAL LANDSCAPER

The flowers are blooming, and the grass has begun to grow anew, making spring a great time for homeowners to once again turn their attention to landscaping. Those who arent looking forward to dusting off their lawnmowers and re-threading their string trimmers may want to hire professional landscapers to tend to their lawns and gardens.

A recent joint study by the National Gardening Association, Residential Lawn and Landscape Services and the Value of Landscaping found that homeowners spend roughly $45 bil-lion per year on professional lawn and landscape services, as nearly 30 percent of all households across the United States use at least one type of lawn or landscape service. The ris-ing use of lawn care services is indicative of homeowners appreciation of the convenience and craftsmanship profes-sional services can provide. While the impact professional landscapers can have on a propertys aesthetic appeal is con-siderable,
