CAPITAL REGION IMMIGRATION ORAL HISTORY PROJECT

CAPITAL DISTRICT – Being initiated in 2015 by the Interna-tional Center, the Capital Region Immigration Oral History Project will collect and preserve the firsthand interviews of Capital Region immigrants. ICCR will rely on staff, interns and trained community volunteers to conduct interviews to gather first-hand stories about immigrant experiences. First-person narratives, regardless of how long ago, are en-lightening and provide insight into individual immigrant stories. In addition to audio- and video-recorded interviews, a sampling of individuals interviewed will be photographed and included in a proposed upcoming pictorial exhibit. If you or someone you know is interested in sharing your first-hand immigrant experience please contact the International Cen-ter at (518) 708-7608 or [email protected].

HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN WHO STUTTER

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrass-ing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutter-inghelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

DID YOU KNOW? Consuming excessive amounts of sodium not only aff ects your health but also may aff ect your appearance. A diet that’s rich in sodium has long been linked to a host of health problems, including high blood pres-sure, stroke, kidney disease, and stomach cancer. But consuming too much so-dium also leads to increased water retention, which can cause weight gain and make men and women appear

puff y and bloated. Accord-ing to the American Heart Association, the recom-mended daily sodium intake is 1,500 milligrams. But the AHA notes that the average American consumes more than double that amount on a daily basis, and Health Canada asserts that Cana-dians also eat roughly the same amount of sodium each day as their American counterparts. While sodium is an essential nutrient, the

human body does not need a lot of it to reap its benefi ts. Bread, processed meats and soups are some of the major contributors of dietary so-dium, so men, women and even children, who the AHA notes are far more likely to develop high blood pressure as adults if they consume a high-sodium diet as a child, should study packaging on these items to ensure they aren’t overloaded with sodium.

down South. These babies have been vet checked, first shots and wormed.

These little babies are absolutely gorgeous! They are about 8-10 weeks old, up to date on shots and vet checked. There are

about 8 of these pups and each one is prettier than the next.
