04 THE OWL
juniorsround-upCleethorpes Town has come a long way in its relatively short history. Initially formed in 1998 as Lincolnshire Soccer School, it was the brainchild of former Grimsby Town player Tommy Watson. The team was an immediate success with both boys and girls across every age group and the club began to grow quickly.
In 2003, the club set up a flagship senior team. In the team's first season within the Lincolnshire League they secured a credible fourth place finish for which the foundations for the future were set. Now rebranded as Cleethorpes Town, the club has redeveloped into an important community outlet. With over 30 teams competing at every level of local and regional football, the Owls are one of the largest clubs in the area and still continues to expand in all areas. The excellent array of teams and high quality coaching saw the club awarded with Football Association Charter Standard Community Club Status thus further underlining the clubs commitment to providing high quality football coaching alongside enjoyment for youngsters.
The development and evolution of Cleethorpes Town Football Club has been spearheaded by the first team. With the arrival of a new manager during the 2010-11 season it saw the club who were languishing in the lower echelons of the Sills and Betteridge Lincolnshire League go on to finish the season in an amazing third place. In addition, the club collected the Supplementary Cup by defeating Heckington United in the final at Sincil Bank.
The 2011-12 season saw the Owls not only become champions of the Lincs League but also win the Challenge Cup. Additionally the club was accepted into the Northern Counties East League.
Our first season in the NCEL saw us finish fourth in the table with some impressive victories along the way. It was a steep learning curve for the players, management and staff.
The 2013-14 started with a change of management and Marcus Newell was brought in. The season started off at a medium pace but a long unbeaten streak mean the Owls were top of the league at Christmas. However, we had a slow slow to the new year and fell 7 points behind with only a handful of games remaining. With the pressure at its highest, others around us felt it most and we managed to secure the title with one game to go.
In 2014-15 the club started life out in the NCEL Premier Division in slow fashion and with a mountain of Cup games fell behind the main pack. But once the FA Cup exploits had finished, we went on a run of 11 then 9 games without defeat which saw us climb the league table and had the rest looking over their shoulders. We finished the campaign in 4th place, our highest ever position and also got to the NCEL League Cup Final which we narrowly lost.
Cleethorpes Town represented the Northern Counties East League in July 2015 in the Toolstation Cup in Bristol where they played Willand Rovers. A nine-goal thriller ensued and thanks to a hat-trick from Danny Trott and a brace from Marc Cooper the Owls lifted the trophy. The club is determined to make further strides to improve and fulfill their immediate ambition of becoming North East Lincolnshire's most successful lower league football club. With plans in place for a new stadium back at the true home of Cleethorpes Town Football Club, at the Linden Homes Club, it is a truly exciting time for the Owls.

owlshistoryCleethorpes Town are delighted to announce that Nottingham Building Society have kindly donated £250 to sponsor the Under 11’s Swift Auto side.
The Nottingham is a mutual building society and estate agency with branches throughout Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Northamptonshire, Cambridgeshire, South Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. Since 1849, they have been putting their customers’ needs at the heart of everything they do, providing advice, products and services for every stage of their lives to make sure they have a secure home and financial future.
Sarah Heinzman of The Nottingham Building Society commented, “We have been sponsoring local sides for a couple of years now. We select a different club each year and offer a £250 sponsorship. This helps us build up relationships in the local community.”“We pick a team that we think would be suitable to receive the sponsorship money and go from
there. Cleethorpes Town are a local and upcoming team and after speaking to Karl Overend, the Under 11’s team manager, I knew that we had made the right decision.”
Karl Overend was delighted to have received the funds for the kit. “It is a fantastic and generous offer from the Nottingham Building Society. The money has gone towards the cost of a new kit for the players and they are really pleased with it.”
Cleethorpes Town Ladies were formed at the beginning of last season and competed for the first time in the East Midlands Womans Regional Football League Division One under the helm of former Grimsby Town Ladies manager Paul Farbrace.
“Our first season with Cleethorpes Town finished with progress in terms of reaching a Cup Final although we lost it 4-2. The move across saw us retain the same side as well as adding a couple in which helped,” he commented. “In terms of league standings we maybe didn't do as well as we maybe should;
particularly when we fielded a full 11. We can compete at the top end of the table as the results and performances against Champions Winterton Rangers shows”, Paul added.
“Going into the 2015-16 season we can hopefully improve our league position as well as promote and progress the ladies and girls section furthermore. We'd like to thank everyone at the Club and also our sponsors Haines Watts and PGD Limited for their support during the season.”

DAVE PATTERSONCHAIRMAN
An opening day defeat completely against the run of play away at AFC Louth who went 1-0 up after 5 minutes from a free kick was not the ideal start of the season for “A” team manager Andy Cawte.
Reece Moody hit the bar in the second half with a volley from 25 yards out and further chances came and went but could only find AFC Louth goalkeeper with at least 8 shots being kept out
much to their frustration.
“8 of the 16 players involved were under the age of 21 but we're mixed in with the experience of Paul Jones, Andy Bradley and John Willis. The performance couldn't be knocked with them moving the ball round well and creating chances” said Andy Cawte afterwards.
Three changes were made from the first game of season away against last seasons champions North Somercotes. Tom Cooke made his debut for the 'A' team in goal with Dale Pratt and Jack Steel, also making his debut coming in.
An even first half erupted on 36 minutes when Somercotes broke the deadlock after a scramble in the area. They doubled their lead 2 minutes later when the Owls failed to clear. Straight from the kick off Somercotes had the ball back and back in the Owls net to make it 3-0 in 4 minutes.
The Owls gathered ourselves at half time and asked for a positive reaction, which they got in second half that saw Steel hit the bar and Paul Jones hitting the bar from a header much to the Owls frustration.
Joel Mann was pulled back in the area from a corner which Jones converted on 78 minutes . They continued to plug away but couldn't find another way through and the game finished 3-1.
Andy commented about the 2nd game of the season, “The response from the lads at half time when 3-0 was good too see and shows we wont let our heads drop showing pride in the process. Lessons learnt from us as a team to take as barring the 4 or 5 minutes we produced a good performance but can't switch off against sides in this league.
“a” team2015-16 season so far
Many people have been asking me “What’s wrong with Cleethorpes Town. They were flying high last season and have started so badly.”
I say to them, well we haven’t played badly, just been unlucky. We didn’t play play for around 20 minutes away at Rainworth but aaprt from that we have stuck together and it’s all
coming together now.
Tuesday 8-0 win wasn’t a massive surprise for me as we have been training well and the lads are as sharp as ever. We just haven’t had the rub of the green so to speak so far this season but if we can put a big run together we will be up at the right end of the table before we know it.
Today we host Staveley Miners Welfare, so a big warm welcome to
those that have travelled, to their players, committee and and supporters. I hope you have agreat day at the seaside.
We welcome you all back in open arms to our club house which is just 3 miles down the road, at the Linden Homes Club, Clee Road, Grimsby. Cheap beer and a great atmosphere to round up a good day.
I hope everyone has a good day and hope to see you back here soon.

THE OWL 35
Cleethorpes Town Development Team have had mixed fortunes so far in their first four league games. They started with a 3-0 win away at Brigg Town. That was followed by a 3-3 draw away at Skegness Town.
Since then, the Owls have lost two games against Wyberton 3-0, once in the league and once in the Cup. They were sandwiched between a win at Market Rasen.
Manager Gary Paton commented, “I am very impressed with our start this season apart from the blip last Saturday but we will bounce back on the 26th when we host Brigg Town at the Linden Homes Club.”
“So far this season Joe Winship, Mikey Milne and George Haines have really adapted well up to now, but I don’t like to single individual players out as we are a team, win, lose or drawn.”
Gary added, “We need to start games a lot better but we are working on this during training and the way we prepare in the warm up. To be honest we are playing football the right way.”
“Our hopes are to finish as high up as we can and have a good cup run and to enjoy the season. I would like to try and get a few players involved with the first team.”
Gary only took over the role of Manager of the Development squad in July but added, “I would like to say thanks to all my players, my staff and to the first team management for their help with the players plus when the first team are aaa and we are at home it would be good to get some of the supporters down and I am sure that they would be pleasantly surprised at how well we play."

MATTHEW POWELLFIRST-TEAM ASSISTANT MANAGER
We had a rocky start to the season but Tuesdays 8-0 win over Retford United just shows what we are all about. Talent, ability and bags of goals!
I am so pleased for the lads to have finally kick started the season as it is thoroughly what
they deserve.
Their preparations for the game are seond to none and always give it 100% during training and the warm-ups. They have the ability to go on a major run now and challenge the teams above them so
who knows in a couple of
months where we will be in the table.
It has been great to see plenty of the younger players rising up to the challenge recently and after watching the Under 21’s on Wednesday night the future of our club is looking very bright.
Lastly, I would like to thank all the loyal supporters who have travlled to all our games so far. It really means a lot to the lads and gives them all an extra boost on the field.

action replaymatch reportCooper was denied with a fine block at one end hen Denton saw his long range shot narrowly miss the left hand side upright.
With time ticking down and both teams becoming frustrated the Owls had the best chance with just 13 minutes left as Robertson broke free but once again the goal frame came to the rescue of Clipstone as his curling shot rebounded back off the cross bar much to his angst.
However, just seven minutes later all was forgiven as Cooper all but sealed the game as his completed his hat-trick in fine style after the Owls broke forward and he coolly side footed the ball past Hernandez sending the travelling army into raptures.
Deep into injury time Clipstone managed to pull a goal back through Brad Jones who terrifically volleyed home a long Royles cross but it was too late for the Cobras who could not fashion another chance in the remaining 60 seconds.
The win sends the Owls to 16th in the standings with plenty of games in hand over most of the other sides.

32 THE OWL
Cooper increased the Owls grip on the game in the 41st minute as once again he headed goalbound, this time from a Mascall cross following a swift move down the right from the Owls.
The referee was just about to blow for half time when Jahmal Smith got the wrong side of Tim Lowe and was upended inside the box leaving the referee with no option but to award a penalty. It was neatly dispatched by Allec Denton sending Fenty the wrong way with the last kick of the half.
With no changes at the break it was the hosts who started the brighter looking for an equaliser. Fenty was on hand to deny Sam Finlan who inadvertently deflected Finlans shot from just outside the box which looked like it was heading into the back of the net and it would have had it not been for a fine reaction save.
Moments later, the Owls really should have stretched their advantage but Robertson just could not turn the ball home as he curled he shot beyond the onrushing Hernandez but saw the ball come crashing back off the post.

to strengthen their sides but found resolute defenders at both ends.

Saturday 19th September 2015 / Worksop Van Hire Stadium / Attendance: 78A hat-trick from Marc Cooper was enough for Cleethorpes Town to record their third win of the season yesterday against Clipstone. The Owls raced into a 2-0 lead but were pegged back through a penalty just before the break but Cooper extended the Owls lead with five minutes to go. Clipstone did pull a goal back deep into injury time but it was not enough as the Owls collected all three points.
Marcus Newell kept with the same starting line-up as from the Owls 2-1 defeat last weekend to Garforth Town.
It was the hosts who started the brightest in the sunshine as keeper Miles Fenty had to think quickly to deny Allec Denton from just outside the box as he looked to open the scoring.
The Owls pushed forward to try and respond to the early pressure and nearly got the break through in the sixth minute but Brody Robertson was pulled back for
offside as he sprinted clear with just the keeper to beat.
Just three minutes later the Owls should have taken the lead through Cooper but keeper Steve Hernandez managed to keep out a riffled shot from 20 yards.
With pressure increasing and the visitors pushing forward, Hernandez was once again called into action, this time to deny former Grimsby Town winger Caine Winfarrah who headed straight at the keeper from close range from a Luke Mascall cross.
The visiting fans did not have to wait much longer though for the first goal of the afternoon. Cooper managed to rise above his marker Liam Royles to nod home a Peter Winn corner from the left.

history andfactfileThe beautiful game has been played in Staveley for well over a hundred years and in 1883 a Staveley side beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 in the F.A Cup. In 1962 at nearby Barrow Hill under the name, Nag’s Head FC, a Sunday side was formed, playing friendlies for three years before being accepted into the Mansfield League.
In 1968 they transferred to the Chesterfield League, before a Saturday side was formed in 1989 at their current home of Inkersall Road, finishing runners-up in the Chesterfield Amateur League, and winning the Byron Cup. In 1991 the club moved up to the Sheffield County Senior League and winning Division Three, then Division Two in consecutive seasons.
Staveley by passed Division One and were welcomed into the Central Midlands League in 1993, finishing 4th, 12th, 5th and 3rd and, after passing the necessary ground grading requirements, continued their rise up the pyramid by being accepted into the Northern Counties East Division One in 1997, and finished runners-up, and claimed their place in the Premier Division, joining the likes of Buxton and Sheffield. They also picked up their first piece of Northern Counties silverware, when winning the Wilkinson Sword Trophy, beating Harrogate Railway 8-3 on aggregate.
In 2000/01 season Staveley MW suffered the first relegation in their short history after finishing bottom, 67 points behind Champions BriggTown, and then followed another disastrous season, finishing 2nd bottom of Division One, but surviving their status by re-election. Following a terrible run until Christmas with just one league victory and despite winning their last three away games the club still finished bottom of Division One, but were again duly re-elected.
In 2003/04 the club finished 3rd bottom that year avoiding relegation somewhat fortuitously by re-election in the final minute of the season. Things improved in 2004/05 with a creditable 9th place finish and in 2005/2006 and 2006/2007 finishes of 10th and 6th respectively were achieved. In May 2007 it was reported that the clubs football committee had resigned on mass and the club was ready to fold before Terry Damms who was appointed as Chairman and his team of helpers, rushed through a rescue package to save the club from extinction in early June. In the weeks leading up to the start of the NCEL season things were frantic with urgent work to the ground and facilities, requiring a monumental effort to get the club ready for the season ahead.
The clubs ethos of youth football was evident from day one of the 2007/2008 season with no less than 7 first team regulars being eligible for the U19’s. The club with what was basically an U19 team, managed a commendable 8th placed finish in the NCEL Division 1. The Under 19’s gained promotion from division 3 to division 2.
In 2008/2009 the club went on a 23 game unbeaten run and collected 57-points from the last 25-games, finishing fourth, and added the Wilkinson Sword Trophy to the trophy cabinet being the only club to win it twice.
In 2010/2011 the club produced its best ever season with the first team having an array of youngsters in it winning the NCEL Division 1 Title, the reserves winning the Central Midlands Reserve league and the U19’s finishing runners up and winning the Minishield. All sorts of records were broken during that season with us having the NCEL Top Scorer Ryan Damms who netted 38 times and surpassed 100 goals for the club, a record number of consecutive and total clean sheets was achieved and a last 32 FA vase place was also achieved.
In 2011/2012 perhaps one of the clubs greatest achievements came when we came within a whisker of appearing in an FA Vase Final at Wembley eventually going out to the winners UTS Dunston by 3-2, a heart breaking experience if ever there was one. In early 2013 the clubs main sponsorship was lost and with the same all but a handful of players and the manager also left the club. The club finished mid-table. This was an exceptionally testing time for the club, but it’s strategy remained and from where it started, its youth ethos, the club dusted itself down and set about re-building its model.
The 2013/2014 season started with a fair expectation, but ill-discipline and a string of poor results and performances followed and a mid-table finish was achieved. For the 2014/2015 season the club went on an 11 game winning streak, but that was followed by the club taking just 18 points from the last 20 league games and a 9th finish was achieved. The U21 team however was starting to flourish and a top 3 finish and wining the HKLDFL Cup was a superb achievement. We recognise here that it is the supporters who are as important if not more important than the players and managers themselves. Non-league football is here for a reason, to provide to a paying customer an enjoyable time at affordable prices with as good as facilities as each club can afford. We now have a group of people within our Press Gang, within our clubhouse, within our club structure that are all pulling together in one direction. It is not about the Chairman, the manager or any one player, it is about “the club” from tots at 3 and 4 year old through the juniors, ladies and U21 team to the first team. It’s about our fantastic band of volunteers with whose help this club would not survive. We are a community club here for the benefit of the local people and kids. Yes we will recruit players from outside the region also where we compliment the differing people and groups so we are competitive. That must be done professionally, with discipline and respect for all concerned in our beautiful game.

The Welfare went behind in the 51st minute when James Cottingham finished smartly following a good move. Welfare then equlised 15 minutes later through Courtney Hastings, hist 7th of the season.
However, as the game looked like it was heading into extra time, Andrew Ofosu poped up to head home a cross from the right giving Worksop a last minute winner.

“To lose the NCEL League Cup final 4-3 after leading 3-1 with 7 minutes to go was gutting but we will bounce back in style after pledging never to do that again...”

3STAVELEY MINERS WELFARE
Saturday 29th November 2014 / Bradley Community Stadium / Attendance: 146CLEETHORPES Town suffered their first league defeat in eight matches when they lost to Staveley Miners Welfare on Saturday.
The Owls went down 3-2 with a brace from top-scorer Marc Cooper, below, not enough as goals from James Kay, Craig Fisher and Jahmal Smith gave the visitors the points. The Owls opened the scoring after Jonathan Oglesby's effort was cleared by a defender to Cooper, who fired home from six yards.
Cooper then fired a free-kick straight at the keeper as the hosts pushed for a second.
A fine move involving four Staveley players resulted with the ball being laid off to Kay, who steered into the top corner.Smith should then have put Staveley in front, but Richard Peck was on hand to block his powerful shot from just outside the box.
However, only three minutes later, they did take the lead.A corner was played in from the right and Beattie's weak punch fell straight to Fisher who smashed a deflected effort home.
Cooper then crashed a volley off the bar as Marcus Newell's side pushed for an equaliser.
The ball bounced down and Clee appealed that the ball had crossed the line, but the referee waved play on.
Cooper was denied again moments later when he saw a decent shot blocked by Matt Hassett before dragging another effort wide of the target seconds later.
Shortly after the restart, Staveley looked odds-on to increase their lead when a great ball from Damien Magee played in Smith, but he was denied by a Liam Dickens' superb last-ditch challenge.
Staveley were left to rue that miss as the Owls immediately went up the other end and equalised.
Cooper grabbed his second of the game when he bundled home Alex Flett's cross from the right.
Clee saw chances to take the lead come and go, with Luke Mascall heading narrowly over and Cooper's free-kick striking the woodwork.
Four minutes from time, disaster struck for the hosts when Smith nicked the winner after he pounced on a defensive error before tucking the ball away calmly.

How would you sum up last season? Would you say it was a success?I would have to say that it was a great sucess. Even though we did not win any trophies to get promoted I think that we showed what we are capable of and we must push on from this.
What sort of things did you get up to during the off-season?I’ve just been enjoying family time really and spending time relaxing.
Did you enjoy pre-season? Is this something you look forward to or dread?I enjoy pre-season to be honest. I like to get fit again and it’s good to meet up with the lads.
Nothing beats competitive football I suppose, how much was you looking forward to the start of the season?I was really looking forward to the new season and hope we can push on now following our poor start to the season.
You scored 11 goals in 48 appearances with 23 assists, which do you think was your best goal?
I would have to say my free kick against Barton Town Old Boys. I struck the ball perfectly and gave the keeper no chance!
What was the hardest game last season?Worksop Town away when we lost 3-1 having being 1-0 up.
How do you expect us to do this season?I think that we should be up there with Tadcaster and Worksop pushing for promotion.
Marcus has a successful time with the club, why do you think this is?Marcus knows all of his players very well and is a top manager!
You played as a winger for most of last season, is this your natural position or something you have adapted to?I have always played on the wing so I would have to say that this is my natural position.

“Sometimes you have to go back in life to move forwards” pondered the Staveley Miners Welfare
chairman Terry Damms.
In 2013 Staveley were a club in turmoil. After issues with sponsorship the club’s playing budget was completely removed and all but two players left the club.
“As regrettable as it is non-league football is driven by players and their delusions of financial gain. It was a case of stabilising the ship and building for the future, it was a very testing time but one that was also very enjoyable in many ways.”
The team nicknamed “The Trojans” are no strangers to adversity. “In September 2008 the then first team
manager and playing staff walked out on the club, so in our next game we took our entire U19’s squad to play a step five NWCL side called Runcorn Linnets. The game went to extra time, and we lost 4-3 before a crowd of just under two hundred. It was a memorable day if ever there was one and it set our club off on a course to develop youngsters for the future.”
Damms is the managing director at HKL Specialists, and the company sponsor the club and the North Midlands Development League.
Its role in both enables Staveley to bring through younger players and build for the future. “It is the Staveley way, on Saturday we should have five or six players who are still eligible for the under 21s.”
The chairman also explained why he wants the club to bring through younger players: “As time goes by players get older, they have family lives and work duties and tend to
18 THE OWL
lose interest as they progress. Yet some still try and suck the last ounce of blood and penny from you. We won’t have money driven players at our club – fact.” Not just satisfied with developing young talent Staveley also want to become financially stable.
“We don’t want to be dependent on HKL or for that matter any one sponsor. We are developing with every available penny; the facilities and the playing budget is the same this season as it was last and it will be the same for the next four seasons. Stavely MWFC is a club for the recreational community of staveley; it’s all about them.”
