Master Control Program (MCP)

Description

The Master Control Program (MCP) is the comprehensive, virtual memory operating system that operates on enterprise servers. The MCP provides a versatile environment by supporting concurrent batch and online transaction processing (OLTP). The MCP also includes the facilities to interface with industry-standard tools and applications from other operating system environments. The MCP permits the use of compiler programming languages only, and accommodates future system growth or distribution across the broadest range of 100 percent object code-compatible hardware products in the industry, without reprogramming.

The MCP functions in complete integration with hardware logic to simplify system operation and control. It provides automatic multiprogramming and multiprocessing, as well as centralized I/O control for peripheral and data communication devices. It automatically allocates system resources, including data and I/O processors, memory, and peripherals. It manages all job and task initiation and control, local and remote operator interfaces, and system security.

The MCP automatically handles all disk file management, including space allocation, file assignment, and access control.

Page 13: ClearPath Enterprise Servers · C# and C++ MCP API defined as socket options . General Features . Connectivity Services includes the following services: Message Framing Service: The

Software Release Announcement

8230 6739–000 9

The MCP environment has many security attributes that reduce and eliminate security vulnerabilities. These features are integrated into the operating system so all applications inherit them by default.

New Features/Enhancements

The following features and enhancements were added to the MCP:

VSS-3 support of 4K physical disk sectors

This feature adds the VSS-3 virtual sector size to support physical sector sizes of 4096 bytes, also referred to as 4K. In order to facilitate migration to VSS-3 on 4K sector disks, the ability to configure a 180-byte disk or a VSS-2 disk so that it can be mirrored to a VSS-3 disk is also provided.

System Log Creation Date Changes

The system log was updated to accommodate file creation dates after March 12, 2031.

Support for I/O devices that use ALUA for multi-pathing of LUNs

Support for implicit Asymmetric Logical Unit Access (ALUA) was added to support storage arrays that use ALUA for multi-pathing to LUNs. AULA is different from the Active-Passive pathing used on EMC VNX storage arrays and requires the MCP to support all native ALUA devices.

Note: ALUA is not recommended for EMC MAX storage arrays, which support Active-Active pathing.

Added data on lost log records in the SUMLOG

The SUMLOG includes additional information to indicate that records were discarded due to a "LOG FULL" condition.

Minor Enhancements to Software Inventory Assessment Utility

Software Inventory Assessment Utility data can be collected and added to the SUMLOG in the CONFIG record.

General availability of Data Compression

ClearPath MCP Release 17.0 introduces an API for use by applications to make general use of the data compression capability that was introduced in Release 16.0.

NEWP Compiler

Description

NEWP is a programming language based on ALGOL that you use to implement system software. Its major application is the MCP, and thus some features of NEWP are closely tied to the features available in MCP and the underlying hardware.

Significant differences exist between ALGOL and NEWP. NEWP performs more rigorous type checking than ALGOL does, which helps prevent errors caused by unexpected type conflicts. NEWP provides a number of features that ALGOL lacks, such as modules, user-defined scalar types, and sets. NEWP does not include the environmental software interfaces that ALGOL supports, such as interfaces to Enterprise Database Server for ClearPath MCP or Transaction Server.

New Features/Enhancements

NEWP has been enhanced to allow <array reference variable>:=<pointer expression> in an <array reference assignment>.

For example:

POINTER P; P := ARY [6, 4]; ARRAY REFERENCE A[0]; A:=P;

(in effect being equivalent to A := ARY [6, *];)

This allows a procedure that has a pointer as a formal parameter to access the array to which the pointer refers, enabling the use of REMAININGCHARS and a RESIZE of the referenced array if necessary.

Network Services

Description

Network Services (NNS) provides a set of software services that enhance the utilization of the Windows environment in a ClearPath server.

The Enhanced Virtual LAN (EVLAN) Network Service provides a seamless, fast, and secure virtual LAN data path between the MCP and Windows environments of ClearPath servers. Communication across the EVLAN uses the TCP/IP protocol. No

Page 33: ClearPath Enterprise Servers · C# and C++ MCP API defined as socket options . General Features . Connectivity Services includes the following services: Message Framing Service: The

Software Release Announcement

8230 6739–000 29

changes are required to the applications and services in either processing environment to use EVLAN.

The Shared Adapter Network Services for Ethernet enables the MCP environment to use a qualified Ethernet adapter located in the Windows environment. In the MCP environment, both TCP/IP and BNA network providers can use this connection.

Because Network Services runs in both the Windows and the MCP environments of the ClearPath server, services and resources can be located in the environment that is most appropriate for the task being performed.

Network Services supports up to eight shared adapter connections per Network Processor instance, where a connection is an Ethernet port, an 802.1Q VLAN, or an Adapter Team.

Network Services can use each of the connection types listed to allow MCP network access. On some platforms, Windows TCP/IP can remain enabled for the connection or be disabled. This range of choices results in the following connection categories, all considered forms of Shared Adapters:

Exclusive to Windows TCP/IP (Windows TCP/IP enabled, Network Services disabled)

Exclusive to the MCP environment (Windows TCP/IP disabled, Network Services enabled)

Shared by both environments (Windows TCP/IP enabled, Network Services enabled) (Shared adapters can be configured only on Libra Model 450, Libra Model 460, FS1750, SP1760, LX170, or LX180 servers.)

New Features/Enhancements

The following features and enhancements were added to Network Services:

SpeedEx Attribute for Networking Connection Groups

The Speed attribute of LAN Connection Groups is a 32-bit value. Current speeds of Network Adapters are sufficiently fast that a 32- bit value is insufficient. This feature creates a new attribute – SpeedEx – that allows:

The speed to be entered in a more user-friendly manner.

Future growth to prevent this issue.

Automatically Synchronize Disk Encryption Keys Between ClearPath MCP Servers

On ClearPath servers that support Disk Encryption, Business Continuity Accelerator automatically compares the list of disk encryption keys between servers identified to BCA. Appropriate warnings are presented for mismatched key capabilities and the disk keys are automatically distributed and merged onto key-capable servers.

Generated failover scripts for EMC SRDF

Business Continuity Accelerator generates failover scripts for EMC Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF).

BCA Secure TCP/IP for Heartbeat and Storage Management

Business Continuity Accelerator uses SSH to secure the TCP/IP communications used for heartbeat and storage management (for example, sending disk encryption keys between hosts).

New BCA System Command

The MCP now recognizes BCA as a system command. This simplifies passing commands to BCASUPPORT and Business Continuity Assistant. The BCA system command eliminates the need for this multistep process by allowing operators to directly send BCA commands.

The new BCA command follows the syntax of the commands traditionally passed using an AX. The AX could only be performed to the BCA stack running as an MCS. Previously, operators would first use the MCS system command to determine the mix number for BCA and then use this mix number to AX a command to BCA.

The following are example uses for the BCA system command:

BCA FAILOVER PRODUCTION

BCA RELOCATE GROUP 3

BCA STATE

BCA NW REMOVE GROUP 1
