By the time you finish reading through this packet, we hope that you will share our excitement about the opportunity to power Grinnell College with renewable energy from college-owned wind turbines. The College stands on the cusp of taking a bold step toward reducing its environmental impact and further embracing its commitment to social responsibility. College-owned wind turbines would not only provide the campus with a stable, clean, and economical source of energy, but they would also send a clear message that Grinnell is an institution willing to proactively invest its wealth in projects that tackle difficult global challenges such as climate change.

This may be the first time you have heard about wind turbines at Grinnell. It certainly will not be the last. In August 2005, President Osgood charged a committee with researching ways to reduce the College' s consumption of utility-produced electricity with wind power. The Wind Feasibi lity Committee finished its preliminary report, a thorough and well-researched study, in January 2006. We understand that you will be hearing from the committee about their findings either during your meeting this weekend or in April. In the interest of allowing the Board to see the report before the community at-large, this report has not yet been made public.

However, we had the opportunity to read the report and one benefit of the turbines that was not fully explored in the analysis is the non-traditional returns the College would gain from this investment. Although the report does indicate a significant economic payback, what it does not gauge is the project's payback in social capital which includes positive public relations, community enhancement, and alumni development. In early February, we launched a petition to gauge interest in the project, and have been humbled by the response. In two weeks, over 800 people signed in support of wind energy for Grinnell. The Grinnell community - including students, alumni, facu lty, staff, parents and residents of the town - is remarkably enthusiastic about college-owned turbines. Their signatures, comments, and the text of the petition itself are all included in this packet. They communicate better than we can the intangible, but very real, value that wind turbines offer Grinnell .

As you learn more about the specifics of this project in the coming days, weeks, and months, we hope you keep these petition signers in mind. They represent a network of Grinne llians excited about the potential of college-owned renewable energy and they look forward to seeing the College administration take the next step in exploring the opportunity at the April meeting of the Board of Trustees.

FTP Wind Campaign Petition

After years of tentatively exploring the practicality of constructirig wind turbines to provide energy for the Grinnell College campus, in August 2005 President Osgood took the commendable step of charging a committee of students, faculty, and Facilities Management staff to research ways to reduce the College's consumption of electricity from the grid with wind power. In January 2006, the Committee released a preliminary report recommending that the College, following confirmation of its findings from an outside consultant, erect commercial-size turbines to provide the majority of electricity needed for the main campus, and additional turbines to provide electricity for the educational facilities at the Conard Environmental Research Area (CERA) .

In their report, the committee stated that conservative estimates reveal that constructing this combination of turbines would not only be environmentally responsible, but also an economically sound investment that could save the College millions of dollars over the lifetime of the turbines.

We, the undersigned, call on President Osgood and the Board of Trustees to implement the recommendations of the Wind Feasibility Committee by the April 2006 meeting of the Trustees. The Committee has demonstrated that construction of turbines to provide wind energy to the College is not only feasible, but a wise investment. And, in a world faced with the challenges of climate change, Grinnell College has the duty as a socially responsible institution to reduce its ecological footprint . Given this responsibility, the College administration should continue along the path they elected when they charged the committee to draft their report. The next step is implementing the recommendations articulated in the report. We call on President Osgood and the Trustees to take that step.

As a former leader of the Environmental Action Group and

member of the Green Campus Committee, I am overjoyed to

hear that wind energy is a definite possibility at Grinnell

College. I believe there is no better way to make Grinnell a

beacon for students who are eager to creatively undertake

today's most pressing challenges, such as dealing with global

dimate change. . . I cannot think of a better way to visibly

demonstrate Grinnell's connection to the prairie then by using

its winds for energy. Finally, as a professor at another prairie

region institution, Kansas State University . . . I am envious

of Grinnell's future wind towers and eager to use its example
