Catalyst charge-outs in the oil refining industry are business critical processes, where time is money. As refiners come under increasing pressure to improve efficiencies, increase output and reduce downtime, the need to review traditional methods of carrying out this crucial activity is essential.

CleanCat successfully answers the needs of the petrochemical industry by combining guaranteed catalyst loading and unloading rates with exceptionally low attrition levels, irrespective of the weather conditions, thereby making a significant contribution to improved reactor vessel efficiency, increasing overall plant profitability.

With use of CleanCat systems, dust and fines build up is significantly reduced, helping to mitigate against running pressure drops.

CleanCat & Mourik Offer the Complete Solution for all Catalyst Needs

To meet the challenge, CleanCat in partnership with leading service provider Mourik International, have pooled their expertise to offer a complete catalyst charge-out service, including specialist equipment for conveying, backed by an experienced and highly trained service team.

The CleanCat ‘Densephase’ SystemThe CleanCat system capitalises on all positive aspects of pneumatic conveying: simplicity, reliability and flexibility.

Dense-phase pneumatic conveying is best suited for transporting friable materials. The material is pushed along a pipe in the form of a ‘plug’ at relatively low velocity. This means minimal attrition to the material being conveyed.

CleanCat, an InterBulk Investments plc company draws on over 25 years of pneumatic conveying experience with catalysts, have developed a unique range of dense-phase conveying systems for the conveying of catalyst, they have utilised this technology on a number of Catalyst handling project’s for Shell, Bp and Haldor Topsoe.

Flexibility

A CleanCat system is flexible and can be used to load, unload, transport, store and convey catalyst directly into the reactor using the following components:

Reactor Loading & Unloading

CDC–CleanCatDenseController

The CDC is the essential component, positioned on top of the reactor, it loads the catalyst from either a CDF or CIV.

The CDC has a dual function. During loading it controls the velocity of the catalyst in the conveying pipe, keeping breakages to minimum levels. During unloading the CDC vacuums the catalyst at a controlled velocity to the top of the reactor with minimal breakage, this is then discharged by gravity through a discharge pipe or sock to ground level in the normal way.

Reactor Loading with CDF

Option1.CDF–CleanCatDenseFeeder

The CDF is a conveying vessel, which conveys in densephase mode. The catalyst is taken from ground level to the top of the reactor, feeding the CDC unit. Material is emptied from big bags; tote bins or barrels into a hopper above the CDF unit. Compressed air or nitrogen is used to push the material from the vessel into the conveying pipe or hose. Inlet and outlet Dome Valves automatically maintain a moving flow of catalyst. The CDF is self-contained with its own control panel and is certified to all international regulations and standards.

Total Logistics Solution – Loading, Unloading, Storage & Transport

Option2.CIV–CleanCatISO-Veyor

The CIV provides a complete solution for the loading, unloading, storage and transport of catalyst. The CIV replaces the CDF unit as the conveying vessel.

The CIV also replaces big bags, flow bins, or drums and offers a simplified means of storage and transport of the catalyst to and from the refinery.

Catalyst manufacturers, regeneration companies or precious metal reclamation companies can also benefit from utilising the CIV.

One CIV is the equivalent to 96 barrels or drums, 18 big bags or 9 flow bins. The CIV is a combined intermodal container and dense-phase conveying vessel for the delivery of new catalyst or the removal of spent catalyst. When used as a delivery system, its function is to dense-phase pneumatically convey catalyst to the CDC unit at the top of the reactor. When the CIV is used for the removal of spent catalyst, it is filled by gravity at the reactor and emptied by pneumatically conveying at the re-processing site. The CIV has the dimensions of a standard ISO container and is built to comply with international regulations and standards.

The CDF and CDC are used in conjunction with catalyst deliveries in big bags and drums. These methods can cause significant challenges for movement and storage of fresh, regenerated or spent catalyst. The CIV can also be used for polymerisation, hydro treating, hydro cracking and reforming catalyst processes or the transportation of valuable dry bulk raw materials used for manufacturing catalysts.

CleanCat introduces a new dimension to the activity of storage and transportation of the catalyst to and from the manufacturer or the regeneration plant to site with the CleanCat ISO-Veyor (CIV).

The CIV is a self contained dense-phase pneumatic conveying system in the form of a conical vessel built within a 20ft ISO frame. The fully intermodal CIV can be transported by road, rail and sea utilising commonly available infrastructure. Catalyst transportation services can be added to the overall CleanCat service package through our sister tank operating company United Transport Tankcontainers BV (UTT).

CleanCat can be responsible for filling of the CIV, the transportation to and from site, the discharge of the units, the return of spent and/or regenerated catalyst as a total transportation package to the refinery or the catalyst supplier.

Loading reactors always requires the transportation of catalyst from ground level to the top of the reactor vessel. Currently service providers favour one of two methods to achieve this transfer. Lifting is the most common method used, usually via large cranes and occasionally using portable elevators but these can be problematic and have increased health and safety risks. This method also assumes that there are no site restrictions prohibiting the access of heavy plant and that weather conditions in the area are benign.

Adverse weather conditions can significantly increase the time taken for charge-outs, resulting in increased reactor downtime and cost over-runs for the refinery. The ‘closed and sealed’ nature of CleanCat system, once installed offers total independence from any weather conditions.

The traditional alternative to cranes is lean phase vacuum conveying. While this system enjoys the convenience of being truck mounted there are a number of negatives, key amongst these are limited throughput and high attrition levels.

The CleanCat system overcomes all of these challenges through a combination of reliable, well-proven technology and experience of designing customised pneumatic conveying solutions for a wide range of bulk materials, including those with friable, toxic and abrasive characteristics.

The Benefits of Utilising the CIV

◊ReducedRiskofDamage,MoistureIngressorAccidentalSpillageofCatalystOnce loaded into the CIV the catalyst is protected against any weather or any other form of contamination.

◊ReducedNumberofLiftsInvolvedDuringCharge-OutLeading to reduced health and safety risks and cost of equipment and storage space.

◊ReducedHandling&LabourRequirementsThe CIV is also suitable for the transportation of ‘spent or regenerated catalyst’.

◊ReducedLogisticChallengesFor a 100m3 reactor some 100 Big Bags would be required, or approximately 250 Drums. In comparison, only 7 CIVs would be required.
