3Bellin College Alumni News ▪ Fall 2014

Fall is one of my favorite times of year here on campus. Th e leaves have changed, the air is cooler and students and employees are busy at learning and working together. Th ough the days have started to grow shorter, I am so impressed with the amount of work that gets accomplished everyday here at the College.

Several new employees have joined us to assist in the advancement of our mission to educate the healthcare professionals of the future. Katie Wall joined me in the President’s Offi ce as the new Administrative Assistant to the President and Vice President of Business and Finance. Katie has over 14 years of experience, and I am very happy to have her. Th e Admissions Department welcomed Kathy McKenzie as an Admissions Counselor. Kathy has been a part of the Bellin family since 2002, and it’s so nice to have her continue her career with us here at the College. Development and Public Relations added two new members in September: Jessica Hopp and Gena Van Domelen. Gena is the department’s Administrative Assistant, and she also joins us from Bellin Health. Jessica serves in the role of Development and Alumni Relations Coordinator, and in this position, she will be the primary liaison between our alumni and the College. You can learn more about her in this newsletter.

It is so exciting that 95 individuals were added to our body of alumni this year during the spring and fall commencement ceremonies. Th e May celebration was hosted at the Byron L. Walter Th eatre on the St. Norbert College campus, and the October graduation was held here at BC. I am certain that the future holds great things for each one of these new graduates, and I am certain they will be great additions to the College’s respected Alumni Association.

We held the 14th Annual Golf Classic over the summer and were able to raise over $54,000 for the Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Sciences program! Th e day was exciting and beautiful, and it was so refreshing to see so many dedicated supporters and friends of the College join us for a day of fun and philanthropy. As you’ll read in this newsletter, one participant even bagged a hole-in-one!

Th e annual Alumni Homecoming, held at the Green Bay Botanical Garden on September 11, was a great night of reminiscing and reconnecting. We had alumni ranging from the class of 1947 all the way to 2013! Th ere were just shy of 100 attendees, and it was truly great to see so many familiar faces.

Th ere are many great things on the horizon for Bellin College and its alumni in the coming months. I would like to take this opportunity to formally invite each and every one of you to come by the College and say hello if you are ever in the area. We love having visitors!

All the best!

Chapter Receives National Recognition

Bellin College is thrilled to announce the BAAMN has earned the 2014 Newcomer of the Year award from the AAMN national organization. In a short period of time, the chapter has demonstrated remarkable progress in membership recruitment, outreach and programming. BAAMN is being recognized for promoting positive role modeling for men in nursing and for encouraging more men into the profession.

Th is chapter was established in October 2013 and its goal is to provide resources, knowledge, and opportunities for individuals interested in gender equality and advocating for men in nursing. Th e Bellin College chapter serves as a place of social connectedness for nurses/nursing students interested in promoting gender equality in nursing.

Men in Nursing and the Incivility of Nursing Presentation

On August 20, 2014, BAAMN hosted a presentation titled Men in Nursing and the Incivility in Nursing on Bellin College's campus. Th e event featured nursing education expert, Keith Rischer, along with Bellin College nursing instructor Jason Mott, PhD, RN, CNE. Th e event was well-attended by nursing students, educators and community healthcare professionals, and served as an opportunity to provide a framework for the history of men in nursing. Topics discussed include current barriers facing men in nursing, ways to improve the climate for men in the profession, and the incivility in nursing.

"It's exciting to get community members and other healthcare professionals on campus and experience great presentations like this," expressed Dr. Mott. "I hope that everyone who attended was able to take something away from the discussion about gender issues within the profession and will consider participating in future BAAMN events."

August 20 National Speaker Event

Bellin College Chapter

On August 20, 2014, Bellin College hosted a National Speaker conference titled Clinical Reasoning Across the Curriculum: Preparing Individuals for Professional Practice. Th e speaker was Keith Rischer, RN, MA, CEN, CCRN, and the purpose of the event was to enable learners to incorporate clinical reasoning skills in the

education of healthcare professionals. Th is conference was held for nurse educators, radiology educators, and any other interested educators.

Th is event was off ered free of charge for all Bellin College faculty and alumni, and provided over three hours of

continuing education credits to those who attended. Almost 70 individuals came to the presentation.

"It was great to off er this experience to Bellin College faculty and alumni, but also to community members," expressed Sherri Hanrahan, event planning committee member and Assistant Professor of Nursing. "It really seemed like the group enjoyed Keith and that they gained a lot from attending. We hope to off er more events like this in the future."

Look to our website and social media platforms for information on additional professional development or continuing education opportunities.

If you are interested in promoting gender equality in nursing, no matter what your gender is, please join this exciting and nationally recognized organization. For more information,

Medical College of Wisconsin at Bellin College Update

Alumni Photo Gallery

Build-Out to Begin in Lower LevelBellin College is excited to announce that construction will begin late this fall in its simulation space to make room for the Medical College of Wisconsin. Th e space downstairs will be used by BC and MCW students as a space for interprofessional training and clinical simulation. Th e build out will result in approximately 8,500 square feet of additional usable space. Th e preliminary plans include an ICU/Peds/ER simulation room, OR simulation room, practice and procedure rooms, and a number of exam rooms. Th ere will also be a complete birthing suite, funded by the Cloud Family Foundation, that will serve as a permanent home to two of the college’s high-fi delity simulators, Noel and Baby Hal.

“Th e space is going to be so versatile and benefi cial for training future healthcare providers in the Northeast Wisconsin Area,” shared Dr. Connie Boerst, President and CEO of Bellin College. “We are very eager to get medical students on campus in 2015 and expand our partnership with MCW.”

Bellin College Alumni News ▪ Fall 20148

Instructors at Bellin College will soon be able to simulate any type of magnetic resonance imaging clinical scenario and work toward solutions with students in the safety of the classroom. Toshiba America Medical Systems donated a MRI simulator valued at approximately $75,000 to the Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Sciences program at Bellin College to be used for educating future imaging professionals. NXC Imaging, a company based out of Minneapolis, Minn., aided in securing this donation and will be a part of the installation process.

“Th e simulator is being shipped this week, and I anticipate it will be up and running in November,” noted Mark Bake, BSRS Program Director. Th e simulator will be utilized in the courses Principles of MRI and Ancillary Imaging and Cross Sectional Anatomy. It will also be used in inter-professional simulations with students and other healthcare professionals. Mark continued, “Th is is an amazing additional to our imaging program. It gives students an opportunity to continually develop their skills in a safe learning environment to better prepare them for their future. Equipment such as this allows instructors to simulate a number of clinical scenarios, which signifi cantly enhances student learning.”

Th is is the second major contribution Toshiba America Medical Systems has made to Bellin College during 2014. In the spring, the company donated a computed tomography simulator to Bellin College’s BSRS program

valued at over $200,000. Th e CT machine has been a part of the curriculum since April. Combined, the two pieces of equipment give students an opportunity to learn how to use the technology they will one day be using in the fi eld.

Mark Bake continued, “Donations such as these allow for students to graduate from our radiologic sciences program with a wide knowledge base in multiple specialties within imaging. Th ese machines will give our students a competitive advantage over other radiologic sciences programs across the country.” Rather than having to undergo extensive training on the job after graduation, the simulation equipment being used as part of the curriculum at BC is preparing students to be workforce ready.

Dr. Matt Fuchs Honorary ScholarshipThis scholarship was created by Mi Chong E. Powers, a 2003 graduate of Bellin College. When establishing the scholarship, Mi Chong indicated that Dr. Fuchs, a professor and area physician, was infl uential to her during her time at the College. Because of his support, Mi Chong created this scholarship in his honor. The award was given out during the current academic year to a student in the nursing program.

Alumni Blogger Shares his Story

Well here is whats going on in the world of me. So as you may know I recently started traveling (to Neenah, WI) in the Emergency Department (ED). Th is has been the best decision that I have ever made. One thing that I always talked about in my blogs was that nursing is a lifelong learning career. Th is has become apparent to me now more than ever.

Being in a trauma center we get lots of very ill patients, eviscerated bowel, partially amputated arms and legs, open head bleeds etc, etc, etc, and with those types of patients comes an educational experience. Each patient brings a diff erent story to the table and it is so important to pay attention to the details to ensure you are giving care to the best of your ability. I would also like to say that in a trauma situation you are only as good as your team in that given scenario. Please, I beg you, learn to appreciate your ancillary staff and do not take advantage of them. As nurses, we can sometimes overlook the help and how important their roles are in our own successes.

I was talking with a medic the other day about how when the ED gets report from EMS we have no idea about how stressful their job is and what they needed to do to get the person from the fi eld to the ED. Th is can sometimes cause animosity towards them because they didn’t do something that could have helped you out. Th en, in turn, when the ED admits a person to the fl oor the ED and fl oor are not on the same page for why some things were done and not done (examples: large

bore IV in the Antecubital, no foley cath in place or dirty linen when moving the patient) I feel that as nurses we need to stick together and learn why each department does what they do so we can better serve our patients in the long haul.

Ok thats enough ranting about that! Anyway life here is better than ever. I am constantly asking for advice and direction from more experienced nurses (and those nurses who are as experienced as I am but may have done something or seen something that I never have) so that I may better care for my patients.

I think, in a way, Bellin is responsible for the learning mentality I have. I mean, throughout the whole

curriculum you are constantly being forced to answer the important question of, WHY?

I hope that I never become the nurse that stops asking questions and I am positive I won’t because of my constant desire to be better.

So I guess to sum everything up here; do not ever stop wanting to learn, always ask questions even if you are 99.9% sure you are right and never be afraid of not knowing something, you will look a lot more silly if you don’t ask and screw up!

P.S. My little boy turns one on FRIDAY!!!! WAHOO for being a dad! Best thing that ever happened to me.
