MAGAZINEVIA
Via Magazine is a travel magazine that focuses on traveling the US on a budget and on the main paths of travel. In this issue VIA focuses on upcom-ing summer travels and warm weather activities. Inspired by real life experi-ences and the authentic traveler.
VIA MEANS “TRAVELING THROUGH (A PLACE) EN ROUTE TO A DESTINATION.” WE HOPE FOR OUR YOUNG READERS TO DISCOVER THEMSELVES THROUGH ADVENTURE.
VIA means “traveling through (a place) en route to a destination.” We hope for our young readers to discover themselves through adventure. WE want you to learn the difference between “direct” and “nonstop” flights, and always opt for the latter. We also want you to make sure you buy your ticket under the your name that also that appears on your ID. It might seem obvious to you that Betsy is a nickname for Elizabeth, but it may not to a skycap, a desk agent, or a security officer―any of whom could ask you to show ID. OTHER passengers might be able to nab those seats 24 hours before the flight, but we hope to teach you you can get the same price as those last minute passagers, without the worry or stress of last minute purchases. Get to your gateway city as early as you

BIG TRIP, BIG BAG, BIG DECISIONS, BIG STRESS. HOW TO KEEP
YOUR STYLE DURING YOUR TRAVELS AND ADVENTURES.
I’ve read my fair share of travel articles, more of which
have provided predictably sensible and boring advice when
it comes to packing for long trips. Like, “bring enough
medication for the duration of your stay, since pharmacies
are hard to find”, or “bring detergent so that you can rinse
out personal garments in the sink.”
OCCASIONALLY I find these eminently practical lists are

A girl on a budget needs to remember several key things:
ONCE A FRIEND AND I WENT BACKPACKING through
india– which is not the most glamourous terrain, although
less than ideal i still had one “smart garment” packed
and on hand. So amid cargo shorts, comfortable t–shirts,
and gallons of bug spray, I threw in a spiffy Calvin Klein
tuxedo jacket. It’s a good thing I did. While stopped in
the city of Udaipur, we were randomely invited to have
cocktails at the palace of the town’s maharaja. My friend
put on some jewerly and a floaty cocktail dress that she

C. RENT A HOUSE OR A CONDO. For groups, renting can be a lot cheaper
than paying for the same number of beds
in a hotel. A recent search turned up several
two-bedroom apartments (that sleep at least
four) for around $150–$250 a night for a
single room. Renting is a particularly good
option in smaller destinations where hotels
are scarce, or in major cities where hotels
are ultra-expensive. Visit homeaway.com,
resortquest.com, and interhomeusa.com for
listings in the United States.
If you’re renting and willing to pay 20 to 30
percent more, try using a villa company, like
LaCURE Villas (lacurevillas.com) or Villas of
Distinction (villasofdistinction.com). They
will have inspected each listed home and
can even act as a concierge recommending
specific properties and planning activities.
D. OPT FOR A SMALL HOTEL. “Americans focus way too much on chain
hotels that cater to business travelers and
corporate budgets,” says Tim Leffel, author
of Make Your Travel Dollars Worth a Fortune
(Travelers’ Tales, $13, amazon.com).
A. CHECK FARES REGULARLY.
Why? They are finally going down. “In
2008 airlines cut capacity so they were
able to survive without discounting fares
too much,” says Brett Snyder, an airline-
industry veteran and the founder of the blog
crankyflier.com. “But because of the current
economy, we’ll see some price cutting.”

PUBLIC TYPE BOOKA Campus Tour
Public Typography shows typography on the University of Kansas campus.

LEAVING THE PARKING GARAGE AND TAKING A WALK TO CAMPUS,
Helvetica is still apparent in a few buildings and street signs but
the type that takes control of most of campus’ building seems to
be Futura. Futura is another popular typeface and it makes sense
that it would appear on many of KU’s buildings. It is easy to read
from any distance and since it is a classic typeface so it will never
look dated on the building, as some of the buildings that might
not have Futura on them.

Rock Chalk! I am the Memorial Stadium
also known as the football stadium. I
love sports, fans and money. People
come here to cheer for KU’s sporting
events. The typography here helps the
fans find information quickly.
Now come on, let’s wave
some wheat.

The directional signage is mostly set in Helvetica di-
recting masses of fans where to go for parking, tickets,
food & beverages, seating etc. These signs direct
many different tasks including; where to sit, stand eat,
purchase and wait. Although there are many different
kinds of signs when placed in the right areas of the
stadium they don’t conflict with each other.

Now you are a true jayhawk, and know everything about ku’s cam-
pus and the public typography it displays, (well almost everything).
You have learned about informational type, directional type, indenti-
fying type, and a few others kind of typography.
Now aren’t you smart.[ [

CHOOSING CHOICES.
Memorial Stadium is located behind the main
campus at KU. The stadium new upgrade in 2008
may have changed the feeling of the old stadium
to new and more modern feel, but the university
has still decided to keep the classics typefaces
while incorporating new signage. The stadium
signage has many different and unique purposes.
The signage is meant to direct the thousands of
people on game day, inform those same people
on various facts including score, and player stats,
as well edcate people with the history of the
stadium with engravings.

The ROCKWELL Alphabet
Rockwell is a serif typeface
belonging to the classifica-
tion slab serif, or Egyptian,
where the serifs are un-
bracketed.
The typeface was designed at the
Monotype foundry’s in-house design
studio in 1934. Slab serifs are similar
in form and in typographic voice to
realist sans-serifs like Akzidenz Grotesk
or Franklin Gothic. Because of its
monoweighted stroke, Rockwell is used
primarily for display rather than lengthy
bodies of text. This an ideal typeface for
the Memorial Stadium football field.
