Social Awareness Campaign

This is a social awareness campaign against child obesity. It consists of three posters each delivering the same message: unhealthy food is dangerous to children, hence parents’ should be reminded to give their children healthier food.

I decided to concentrate on three designs, which are linked by a common concept, message and subject. Certain elements link all the images together. These include simplicity, characterized by the use of white space, the inclusion of junk food, shock, colour scheme, the red sauce creating the impression of blood and the hand in its various positions. The shades of red and yellow used throughout are reminiscent of McDonalds advertising. This aids the audience to identify with the campaign.

Page 10: Portfolio 02 - Claire Borg

This poster shows a limp hand placed next to fries and fried chicken. The position of the hand indicates that the child would eventually suffer an untimely death if unhealthy food is regularly consumed.

Social Awareness Campaign

Left: This poster shows a child drowning in sauce and fries representing the struggle one lives with when dealing with obesity.

Above: This poster represents the parent as the villain, endangering the child’s health due to the proffered food. The shadow of the hand is transformed into the shape of a gun indicating the element of high risk.

Page 14: Portfolio 02 - Claire Borg

The first poster depicts the parent offering junk food to the child, the second poster shows the child struggling and the final poster shows the helpless child dead, due to over-indulgence of junk food. Even though food does not kill instantly the message exaggerates the fact that obesity can cause an early death.

Page 15: Portfolio 02 - Claire Borg

The posters were designed to be placed on a bus stop, which will flip the posters in sequence displaying the message in three steps.

Page 16: Portfolio 02 - Claire Borg

Location

The artwork is placed in different locations. This poster was designed to be placed on the side of a bus stop which is a place where people stop and wait; hence it is the perfect opportunity to capture their attention. Moreover, bus stops are found in many main roads, thus they can also arrest the attention of passing drivers.

I placed this poster at the bottom of a supermarket basket since one is continually looking inside it when filling it up with items. The poster should make them think twice at what choice of food to buy.

Page 20: Portfolio 02 - Claire Borg
Page 21: Portfolio 02 - Claire Borg

This poster was also placed on a bus since it travels from one location to another creating the opportunity for a large number of people to view the campaign. It is placed on the side where the passengers get on in order to encourage people to view the poster while queuing up to pay.

Advertising for MBS

This section focuses on the re-branding of PBS. For this unit I worked as part of a team on our new broadcasting station called MBS – Malta Broadcasting Services. We also renamed the main stations to ‘Life’ which broadcasts ‘MBS News’ and ‘Leisure’ which is further divided into ‘MBS Sports’ and ‘MBS Movies’. The radio stations were also re-named to ‘Music’ and ‘Magic’. I was in charge of advertising this new broadcasting station. I tried to innovatively include the audience in the adverts, in order to capture their attention.

Page 26: Portfolio 02 - Claire Borg
Page 27: Portfolio 02 - Claire Borg

Left: This poster was designed to arouse curiosity within passing viewers. Its aim is to promote ‘MBS Leisure’.

Next page: I also used the element of curiosity in this campaign. I designed three posters and placed the slogan ‘take time’, ‘to watch’, ‘Leisure’ on each poster. The posters were placed on three separate bus stops. Arrows where designed leading one bus stop to the next, to guide the viewers. Moreover, I put the MBS logo design in the arrow to show that it is part of this MBS campaign. People travelling by bus can view the campaign which is completed after passing three bus stops.

MBS Sports

The idea of this campaign was to help the audience feel part of a sports game. I made use of three bus stops in which I placed a tennis ball, a football, and a basketball. In order to capture the viewer’s attention I tried to create the impression of shattered glass. The slogan ‘get in the game’ was used to tie up the campaign.

Left: I designed a set of billboards using the same concept creating the impression of a broken billboard.

Above: I also made a bus stop look like a football net thus inviting the viewer to get involved.

I created the impression of a film strip to advertise the movie of the week.

MBS News

When a person sits down it will seem as if he/she is surrounded by news.

Here I used the idea of a dartboard and placed it in the middle of Valletta. The road is used by people of mixed ages, hence showing that MBS targets everyone.

Here I created a campaign to promote ‘MBS’ in general. My aim was to include the audience. I designed a poster showing a puzzle with a missing piece. The poster is placed on bus stops and buses in order to be viewed in diverse locations. A flyer completing the puzzle and slogan, “Let us entertain you”, was designed to be distributed to the homes of the public.

Right: This is a development of the ‘Kanji radicals’, a Japanese alphabet (view on left hand side). I chose ten characters and manipulated their form to create a new typeface. The style of my alphabet is made up of straight lines and curves .

Style 1 (Top right): The alphabet has two versions. The first style is made up of lines and curves of different thicknesses.

Style 2 (Bottom right): the second style keeps the same thickness of lines throughout the characters showing simplicity and consistency.

Sharon Hall is a small, timid figure with wide brown eyes that dart nervously between the floor and her hands as she speaks.

During our conversation, her sentences fluctuate between slow, fractured prose and sudden, spluttering outbursts as her words fall over each other in a fight to assemble. It has been almost 10 years since Sharon last tried to speak about the childhood memories she has spent much of her life trying to suppress. The experience of sharing her story today she describes as a gruelling rite of passage, one she feared would prove too painful to complete: “Every moment I feel the effects of what I went through,” she starts in a small, raspy voice, pausing briefly to brush an imaginary strand of hair from her cheek, before continuing, “I’ve been trapped by my past for all these years. Being able to finally talk about it is strangely exhilarating.”

The story that Sharon, who is now 40, has been unable to tell before today is one that few would wish to hear: from as far back as she can remember until the day she left home at the age of 16, Sharon, an only child, was sexually abused by her mother. The particulars of her abuse are too horrific to bear repeating in detail; this was sustained sexual violence, which she suffered silently at the hands of the one person who was supposed to love and protect her above all others.

Sharon’s ordeal went undetected for her entire childhood. she had few if any friends at school. Even if others had suspected something was wrong, few would have guessed what it was – and fewer still would have wanted to know the whole truth.

Broken

I didn’t see any way out of the pit that May afternoon, standing under the cemetery tent, staring at the polished wood of the casket that contained my husband’s body. The mother of four school-aged children, I wondered how I would make it. Where could I possibly go from there? I knew the Lord would help me through, but I was so shattered and broken that I couldn’t imagine how I would ever get past the grief and utter devastation of it all.

Except in one specific case. Someone at the gravesite that day had come just for the sole purpose of delivering a message to me. I didn’t know her well; she was merely an acquaintance who taught at my school. But what she said to me, I will never forget until the day I pass from this life. She said that the Lord wanted me to know something--that the greater the need, the greater the grace...the greater the tragedy, the greater the opportunity for God to show Himself as Almighty. In the very moment I heard those words, that message went straight into my heart. My memory of those days is cloudy, but I do know that that experience was a turning point for me, and from that moment on I resolved to trust Him, knowing that somehow, some way, He would pull me out of the deepest, darkest pit of despair I had ever known.

I have seen God’s providential hand constantly at work in my life, orchestrating absolutely everything, even down to the tiniest detail. I never dreamed something so tragic as what happened to my children and me could lead to a joyful, victorious life with such an outpouring of agape from the precious Spirit of God. But that’s God Almighty for you.

Children having a sensitivity threshold that’s very low may exhibit disorders like study problems, drug or alcohol addiction, and other disturbances in the family. In some cases, the family dysfunction is attributed to the problem child even if he is not causing significant trouble (the truth maybe otherwise though difficult to prove). Some growing kids can use humor to rescue themselves and act as an entertainer in groups, while few love to stay in complete social isolation. Rarely some children play more than one of the above roles causing increasing pain and confusion.

None of the parents wish to really hurt their children by choice, but they should ‘intentionally’ be more sensitive to child’s feelings. Family disputes are an inseparable part of life, but it should not be an accepted pattern. Each family member should also preserve his own space and not invade others’; and still be able to express freely, discuss and opine. Parents need to focus on the plight of the problem child who will manifest as either - the over-achiever or the silent sufferer. However, there is one thing in common that can be enforced to each of these personality types - a sincere attempt to understand them, the attitude of being more like a friend than being a parent or sibling.

One prominent accomplishment of a difficult childhood is that the child is fine-tuned to being adjustable that helps him pull through adversity. The best way to prevent dysfunctional relationship is to detect it at the earliest, find ways to cope with it through communicating, counseling and transform the conflict into productive life plan. Empowering yourself through this tough situation will transform you into an outstanding person and help live life to the fullest.

Domestic violence is a most common form of violence against women and its consequences affect many areas of the lives of victims — housing, health, education and the freedom to live their lives without fear and in the way they wish. Domestic violence should be recognised as a crime.

Violence committed within the family is still considered to be a private matter. Statistics shows that for women between 16 and 44 years of age, domestic violence is thought to be a major cause of death. Therefore, domestic violence should be treated as political and public problem, concerning human rights violation.

The Assembly considers acts of domestic violence to be criminal acts and calls on the member states to recognise that they have an obligation to prevent, investigate and punish the acts of domestic violence and to provide protection to victims.

Taking into account the hidden nature of domestic violence, the Assembly urges governments to introduce effective awareness-raising policies and information campaigns to inform and educate the population on this problem. Each government should obtain objective information on these crimes.

Interactive T-shirts

‘Knot just Fashion’ is a set of interactive T-shirts which were designed to help children learn how to do simple knots. As a team we chose eight knots and incorporated a design to fit each knot. The child can complete the design by doing the knot, which will have the instructions placed on the tag.

In order to encourage children to buy all eight T-shirts we attached an extra card to the tags. Once the eight cards are collected they form part of a keychain. ‘Knot just Fashion’ was exhibited, and for this reason we also designed an interactive book which enables the audience to try out the knots at that time.

Furniture Design

As a team we designed ‘D-stretch’, a new piece of furniture, which had a new, innovative use. ‘D-stretch’ is used to stretch, relax, release stress, decrease muscle tension and increasing energy and flexibility. It is beneficial to both the physical and mental health of a person. This furniture is mainly designed for computer users who tend to develop back pain.

Page 76: Portfolio 02 - Claire Borg

Eight different positions can be done with the help of D-stretch. These include: Anterior shoulder stretch, Dorsal stretch, Cobra Inversed, Posterior shoulder stretch, side cobra, Arch Back, Thai back position stretch and the downhill position.

Page 77: Portfolio 02 - Claire Borg

Furniture Design

Page 78: Portfolio 02 - Claire Borg

D-stretch is made from bended wood, latex – rubber foam and polyester cotton blend. Four handles made of stainless steel and leather and also attached. The bended wood is used for the shape of the furniture as this gives a warm feeling to furniture used inside offices and homes.

I came up with the design, shape and concept of the furniture, together with my team members. However I did not do the renders.

This is a leaflet I designed which would be given out to the homes of potential buyers. The leaflet explains the purpose of the furniture and the way it is used. The shape of the leaflet is inspired by the design of the furniture.

Commercial

As a group we put together a five-minute commercial, which is meant to promote our product. I came up with the idea behind the commercial. I thought of creating a contrast between stress and relaxation in order to help the viewer understand the effect ‘D-stretch’ has on a person. The commercial ends by showcasing the design from all angles and explaining the way it is used.

Page 92: Portfolio 02 - Claire Borg

While this was going on, we began to brainstorm ideas for our TV commercial. We wanted to base our

storyline for the commercial on our research and we decided to create a storyline, which was based on a

contrast between stress and relaxation. Once we decided on the storyline, we began to collect all the different

props and equipment for the filming of the commercial. Having filmed the commercial, we then delegated the

work to maximise the expertise of the group to best advantage and while some of the group worked on editing

of the commercial others worked on the logo, slogan etc, for the product.

(please see screenshots of the commercial)

Make-up Packaging

This is a make up package that I designed called ‘Day and Night Mascara’. The mascara is designed to hold two brushes. One brush helps create separation and another helps create volume to the eyelashes. The brushes are pushed up with the help of a lever using a mechanism similar to that of a blade.

Most women like to have a different look for the evening especially if they are used to wearing make up during the day. The idea was to create a mascara that can help women create a look for the morning and a bolder look for the evening. This can be done by using the two different brushes. This assignment was part of a competition set up by ‘Toly products’ for which I was awarded third prize.
