We began the sea- son with the help of an energetic group of teen volunteers from the Catholic Heart Work Camp organiza- tion. Ten students from Catholic schools and parishes from around the country gave us a combined total of nearly 250 hours of labor accomplish- ing a “to do” list which I thought we could never complete – yet we did, and then some! We are very grateful for all their hard work. I was also impressed by their attitude of service in the prayer that began each day, during our dis- cussions at lunch, and in their will- ingness to do whatever was asked of them. We praise God for all our youth who give generously of them- selves in service in the name of Christ, here in our parish and around the world. Princi- pal Amanda Lund, teachers, the school staff and the School Advisory Board are working vigorously to en- sure we provide an excellent faith- based academic program. Father Clore, the parish staff, the Parish Pastoral Council, the School Develop- ment Committee and the entire par- ish family are providing avenues for the necessary financial, spiritual and community support. Maintaining and growing the physi- cal, educational and spiritual viabil- ity of a Catholic School is a daunting task. However, it is one that this par- ish has risen to with great success since 1938. It is an endeavor that so tangibly answers the call of Jesus to announce the Good News of the Kingdom of God to our neighbor- hoods and the communities in our parish boundaries. It is a noble work of mercy given so that all may share in the riches of God’s creation regardless of their social or eco- nomic status. In an article published by the Na- tional Black Catholic Congress, the Rev. Patrick Smith, pastor of St. Augustine Catholic Parish and School in Washington DC, intro- duces and captures the purpose and reason for their continuing efforts to keep their school open with Je- sus’ words: “Let the children come to me and do not hinder them, for the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” (Lk 18:16) Fr. Smith summarizes the struggles and challenges they faced with their school in this way: The lesson I hope people will take from the story of Saint Augustine Catholic School is this: Without faith and vision we are defeated even before we get started! …We had a vision of what could be, but not yet a dollar collected! Running a Catholic school is a monumental task. And too many will continue to abandon this effort if they don’t ap- proach it with the eyes of faith. They will see only the massive mountain and miss the Mountain Mover! They will see the great challenge before them and miss the Great Champion within them! They will see the cost but not the Christ; the impossible task but not the God of the Impossi- ble. The key to taking on God’s work is not your ability, but your avail- ability! The question is not whether God can accomplish His amazing work, but whether you will give God permission to accomplish it through you. “Seek first the Kingdom of God…and all these things will be provided for you.” (Matthew 6:33). Building the Kingdom

It has been a very productive sum-mer at our school. We began the sea-son with the help of an energetic group of teen volunteers from the Catholic Heart Work Camp organiza-tion. Ten students from Catholic schools and parishes from around the country gave us a combined total of nearly 250 hours of labor accomplish-ing a “to do” list which I thought we could never complete – yet we did, and then some!

We are very grateful for all their hard work. I was also impressed by their attitude of service in the prayer that began each day, during our dis-cussions at lunch, and in their will-ingness to do whatever was asked of them. We praise God for all our youth who give generously of them-selves in service in the name of Christ, here in our parish and around the world.

Yes, a lot has been done so far (see page 3), but there is still much more to do to insure that our school is con-sistently a safe, clean and attractive environment for our children. Princi-pal Amanda Lund, teachers, the school staff and the School Advisory Board are working vigorously to en-sure we provide an excellent faith-based academic program. Father Clore, the parish staff, the Parish Pastoral Council, the School Develop-ment Committee and the entire par-ish family are providing avenues for the necessary financial, spiritual and community support.

Maintaining and growing the physi-cal, educational and spiritual viabil-ity of a Catholic School is a daunting task. However, it is one that this par-ish has risen to with great success since 1938. It is an endeavor that so tangibly answers the call of Jesus to

announce the Good News of the Kingdom of God to our neighbor-hoods and the communities in our parish boundaries. It is a noble work of mercy given so that all may share in the riches of God’s creation regardless of their social or eco-nomic status.

In an article published by the Na-tional Black Catholic Congress, the Rev. Patrick Smith, pastor of St. Augustine Catholic Parish and School in Washington DC, intro-duces and captures the purpose and reason for their continuing efforts to keep their school open with Je-sus’ words: “Let the children come to me and do not hinder them, for the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” (Lk 18:16) Fr. The question is not whether God can accomplish His amazing work, but whether you will give God permission to accomplish it through you. “Seek first the Kingdom of

The Wisdom of Pope Francis The social dimensions of global

change include the effects of technological innova-tions on employment, so-cial exclusion, an inequi-table distribution and consumption of energy

and other services, social break-down, increased violence and a rise in new forms of social aggression, drug trafficking, growing drug use by young people, and the loss of identity. These are signs that the growth of the past two centuries has not always led to an integral development and an improvement in the quality of life. Some of these signs are also symptomatic of real social decline, the silent rupture of the bonds of integration and social cohesion. Laudato Si

School Happenings…. We recently reported on some of the changes going on over at the school. Parents are continuing to come over to the rectory to receive their new tuition amounts. Our new sliding scale makes Christ the King affordable for local families. At this time close to forty families have started the registration process. As we enter the month of August we are anticipating enrolling even more students. Please continue to tell anyone you know about our school! Again, there have been numerous repairs on the first and second floors and much clean up through-out the school. The first and sec-ond floor main hallways have been repaired and restored, floor-ing in the two preschool rooms has been replaced with brand new vinyl tiles, the gym wall and ceil-ing by the bleachers have been repaired and painted blue and gold, and the two changing rooms located in the gym have been com-pletely refurbished. Currently the basement locker room is being restored to use and the tunnels, boiler room and workshop have all been cleared out and removed of years worth of clutter. We are excited and grateful for all the upgrades and repairs to Christ the King School!

Welcome Sr. Magdalena! Sister Magdalena is the new kitchen manager at St. Christine Soup Kitchen . Here’s a little information about her. Sister Magdalena is a member of the Anamchara Fellowship which is an Episcopalian order with Roots in Celtic spirituality. The Anam-chara Fellowship is a dispersed mo-nastic community. Her Priory meets monthly at the Cathedral of St. Paul in Detroit and the group stays in contact throughout the weeks using social media. Sister Magdalena’s home church is St. Johns’ Episcopal in Plymouth where she works as a lay minister and Eucharistic visitor. Prior to answering Gods’ call, Sister Magdalena spent over 30 years in the food service industry where she worked mostly in schools develop-ing nutrition programs and oversee-ing school lunch programs for inner city youth. She has traveled exten-sively throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and New York tailoring menus and recipes to meet the needs of each schools’ culture. She has also spent time working in hospitals and residential facili-ties working with the needs of the elderly and those in hospice care. Sister Magdalena began her cook-ing career at the tender age of 6 standing on a milk crate helping her mother make tea sandwiches for a catered event in the basement of a Baptist church. She received her degree in Culinary Arts after high school, continued her educa-tion and received an associates de-gree in Dietetics. Eventually she returned to school and finally com-pleted her education receiving a bachelors degree in Management a few years later. Sister has had the opportunity to work with several chefs but be-lieves the best education has come from the people she has met who have come up through the ranks in the kitchen and have learned their craft on the job. Sister Magdalena currently lives in South Lyon with her 11 year old rescued beagle Rosalee.
