JULY 28, 2019 20800 Grand River Avenue Detroit, Michigan 48219 PARISH MISSION We are Christ the King Parish, a richly diverse Christian Community in Northwest Detroit. We are on a journey of Discipleship with Jesus, seeking conversion, reconciliation and renewal. We reach out in welcome to all the people within our neighborhood, proclaiming the good News of Christ the King, building community, celebrating together, serving one another’s needs and the needs of all our neighbors. The Move and Stuff After thirty-seven years, Don and I moved from our South- west Detroit home. The move turned out to be a great clean- sing process for us, both physically and emotionally. We came to terms with all the assorted stuff that one does not really need, let alone want. It took two dumpsters and six trips to the garage sale for us to downsize accordingly. I discarded all those high school/ college gradua- tion cards and numerous wedding invitations that I had collected over the years. Sorting through my book collection was probably the hardest for me be- cause of my great love of books. I downsized my Irish keepsakes and trinkets, giving away those and other items I thought others could use or want. It was amazing to me the num- ber of boxes and bags I opened realiz- ing that it had been at least five years since I looked at any of those items! I have had a habit of buying new clothes while still holding on to those I already had. I ended up do- nating twelve bags of clothes and re- cycled all the wire hangers that I ac- cumulated over the years from vari- ous dry cleaners. Sorting through our personal paperwork resulted in an amazing seven boxes to be shred- ded. It was amazing to me to find the number of chargers and adaptors that we had collected over the years! They were recycled at Best Buy. The saga of the cords reminded me of my childhood with the unending battle of socks and trying to find their mates. Despite my mother’s best efforts to put all the matching socks in the washer and dryer, we continued to have a “sock box” of unmatched sox through high school. We are most grateful to our friends at Christ the King who helped make this move possible along with the much-appreciated help of our family. Deacon Chris Remus, Rick Seefelt and Eddie Evans were a true blessing as they hauled nu- merous boxes of items to the garage sale. I am so grateful to Ruth Re- mus and Mary McLeod for helping me clean the house in preparation for its showing. I also would espe- cially like to thank Maureen Leen who helped me the day after we moved with unpacking boxes and helping us to get settled into our new home. In addition, Maureen was at my side when we had to put our older dog, Jack, to sleep. Thank you also to Betty Johnson for helping me organize my laundry room in the basement. We have now been in our new home for two months. It has been a true blessing as it is a ranch-style with a ramp to make it easier for Don and me to get around. Don and I are still sorting things in our basement and garage, which is an accumula- tion of three households worth of Christmas items. There will be a lot of great Christmas decorations for you to choose from at the Christ- mas garage sale this year! The biggest lesson that we learned through this move is that some- times “stuff” is just that: stuff. While items might have been im- portant and held special memories for us, the memories are what really matter. It is better to simply look back on the memories rather than hold onto a bunch of “stuff” for future generations to have to go through later. Don continues to sustain his health as he awaits a liver transplant. We continue to be grateful to Mike McEvoy, Rick Seefelt, Deacon Chris, and Tom Tomala for taking Don to all his medical appoint- ments. We are grateful for all your prayers and cards as we continue this journey. We pray that more people will consider becoming organ donors the next time that they re- new their driver’s license. Please consider visiting this Michigan Sec- retary of State website at https:// www.michigan.gov/sos and scroll to the bottom of the page to find more information about how to become an organ donor and help save the lives of others. We are on a journey of Discipleship with Jesus, seeking conversion, reconciliation and renewal. We reach out in welcome to all the people within our neighborhood, proclaiming the good News of Christ the King, building community, celebrating together, serving one another’s needs and the needs of all our neighbors.

The Move and Stuff After thirty-seven years, Don and I

moved from our South-west Detroit home. The move turned out to be a great clean-sing process for us, both

physically and emotionally. We came to terms with all the assorted stuff that one does not really need, let alone want. It took two dumpsters and six trips to the garage sale for us to downsize accordingly. I discarded all those high school/ college gradua-tion cards and numerous wedding invitations that I had collected over the years.

Sorting through my book collection was probably the hardest for me be-cause of my great love of books. I downsized my Irish keepsakes and trinkets, giving away those and other items I thought others could use or want. It was amazing to me the num-ber of boxes and bags I opened realiz-ing that it had been at least five years since I looked at any of those items! I have had a habit of buying new clothes while still holding on to those I already had. I ended up do-nating twelve bags of clothes and re-cycled all the wire hangers that I ac-cumulated over the years from vari-ous dry cleaners. Sorting through our personal paperwork resulted in an amazing seven boxes to be shred-ded. It was amazing to me to find the number of chargers and adaptors that we had collected over the years! They were recycled at Best Buy. The saga of the cords reminded me of my childhood with the unending battle of socks and trying to find their mates. Despite my mother’s best efforts to put all the matching socks in the

washer and dryer, we continued to have a “sock box” of unmatched sox through high school.

We are most grateful to our friends at Christ the King who helped make this move possible along with the much-appreciated help of our family. Deacon Chris Remus, Rick Seefelt and Eddie Evans were a true blessing as they hauled nu-merous boxes of items to the garage sale. I am so grateful to Ruth Re-mus and Mary McLeod for helping me clean the house in preparation for its showing. I also would espe-cially like to thank Maureen Leen who helped me the day after we moved with unpacking boxes and helping us to get settled into our new home. Where is your brother? His blood cries out to me, says the Lord. This is not a ques-tion directed to others; it is a question directed to me, to you, to each of us. These brothers and sisters of ours

try to escape difficult situations to find some serenity and peace; they look for a better place for themselves and their families. While it is true that migrations often reveal failures and shortcomings on the part of States and the interna-tional community, they also point to the aspiration of humanity to enjoy a unity marked by respect for differences, by attitudes of acceptance and hospitality which enable an equitable sharing of the world’s goods, and by the protection and the advancement of the dignity and cen-trality of each human being. While en-couraging the development of a better world, we cannot remain silent about the scandal of poverty in its various forms. Violence, exploitation, discrimination, marginalization, restrictive approaches to fundamental freedoms, whether of individuals or of groups: these are some of the chief elements of poverty which need to be overcome. Often these are precisely the elements which mark mi-gratory movements, thus linking migra-tion to poverty.

Take a minute to meet Katie Little

1.) What brought you to Christ the King? Beloved CKSC alumna Katie Horvath initially told me about the service corps, and once I learned more about it, I felt strongly that I was supposed to come to Detroit. I nearly commit-ted to a different volunteer corps, but that decision didn't bring peace. I really believe that the Holy Spirit changed my mind and guided me here. 2.) What did your position(s) entail? I served at Community and Home Supports in a neighborhood outreach role for my first six months in Detroit. With the start of the new service year last August, I changed place-ments to St. Suzanne Cody Rouge Commu-nity Resource Center. Much of my typical day there is spent helping do whatever needs to be done around the Center, including man the front desk. As Green Programs Coordinator, I also have been directly involved with the development of several educational and job training programs centered around green stormwater infrastructure, and a rain garden each on Christ the King's and St. Suzanne's campuses. 3.) What was one of your favorite experiences? It's hard to pick a single moment! I really loved the process and experience of becom-ing part of the community here - having con-versations and learning from people, in mo-ments big and small. I think we had a really wonderful community life this year, both among the three volunteers and within the parish as a whole. 4. ) Any last wishes, thoughts or words? Just a huge THANK YOU to everybody who has welcomed us volunteers into the Christ the King family, year after year! I am so in-credibly grateful to have been a part of this community and met so many amazing peo-ple. Please know I will continue to pray for you all. Katie
