JANUARY 27, 2019 20800 Grand River Avenue Detroit, Michigan 48219 PARISH MISSION We are Christ the King Parish, a richly diverse Christian Community in Northwest Detroit. We are on a journey of Discipleship with Jesus, seeking conversion, reconciliation and renewal. We reach out in welcome to all the people within our neighborhood, proclaiming the good News of Christ the King, building community, celebrating together, serving one another’s needs and the needs of all our neighbors. Celebrating Catholic Education! Today marks the beginning of Catho- lic Schools’ Week. This is a time in which Catholic schools across our country celebrate ourselves and what makes us who we are. It is a week of learning and fun! Catholic Schools’ Week is like a ‘spirit week.’ What makes it different from traditional spirit weeks is that it is a Spirit week, as in the celebration of the Holy Spirit filling our hearts and lives as we live out our faith in ac- tion. We are able to call on God and actively pray and worship, bringing God into all that we do. One question that I am asked is: “Why should I send my child or grandchild to a Catholic school?” There are so many answers to that question. I will often ask parents where they went to school and often receive the response that they went to Catholic school. They then tell me that they received a quality educa- tion that prepared them for the fu- ture. There are many other reasons to attend Catholic schools, particu- larly Christ the King. Christ the King Catholic School has withstood the test of time. In a city where there used to be over 60 Catholic schools, CK is one of only four that remains active. We offer an education that is built on faith and academic knowledge. We teach the importance of service to others. We believe that education is a partner- ship between the school and the par- ents. We focus on teaching our stu- dents to be respectful, responsible, ready, and reflective in all that they do. Catholic schools also set higher stan- dards for student achievement. One of the biggest adjustments for fami- lies choosing a Catholic education and students who are acclimating is the advanced grading scale and rigor that we have at Christ the King. However, we work together to help each child reach his or her unknown potential. Nationally, Catholic schools have a 99% graduation rate with 85% of students attending college. Many students who attend Catholic schools receive scholarships for col- lege. They are also more prepared for college. Take a look at the young people of our own parish and the successes that they have al- ready achieved! We are so blessed to be a part of their formation. Many business leaders, government officials, and others are products of Catholic schools. We want to see the future leaders continue to be productive citizens and encourage them by providing a quality Catho- lic education. Christ the King Catholic School is grateful to our parish and our alumni who con- tinue to support our school in so many different ways. On this, our 80 th year of service, our annual ap- peal goal is $80,000. We are 31% of the way toward that goal. We thank everyone who has so gener- ously donated to our “Let Your Light Shine” appeal! We are look- ing forward to the light of Christ the King Catholic School shining for the next 80 years! As we celebrate Catholic Schools’ Week, we renew our school’s pledge to our mission of loving God, serv- ing our community and pursuing academic excellence in the name of Jesus Christ. Students will be par- ticipating in our school Catholic Schools’ Week Mass on Wednesday at 8:30am. All are welcome to join us in prayer! Members of the CK Student Youth Ministry Council will be representing Christ the King on Thursday at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament for the annual Catholic Schools’ Week Mass celebrated by Archbishop Vi- gneron. We are celebrating our academic achievements as we re- ceive our second quarter report cards at the end of the week. Most importantly, we are serving our community through a very ‘cereaous’ service project. We will be collecting boxes of breakfast cereal…and not just plain cereal, but delicious cereal as well, for St. Christine’s Food Pantry. Cereal is a great way for children to start the day, and sometimes a chocolate puff or crunchy marshmallow can make your day! Our goal is lofty…we hope to collect 300 boxes of cereal! Christ the King Catholic School was very blessed to re- ceive a grant during the first granting year of the Catholic Foundation of Michi- gan. Our project is: “Understanding the Need for Social Justice in Our Commu- nity.” We are working to meet these needs, especially as they relate to the Beatitudes, in our various service pro- jects. We are also focusing on teaching life skills in relation to Catholic Social Teaching to all of our students. Our chil- dren are never too young to learn! We are also excited for the Blackthorn concert on Friday, February 1 st . If you have not purchased your tickets, please do so soon…they are selling fast! This is a wonderful way to wrap up an extraor- dinary week! I hope that you will take a few minutes today to come through our school for our open house which will run until 2:00pm. I thank you again for sharing your time, talent, and treasure with the students of Christ the King! In His Service, Amanda Lund

Celebrating Catholic Education!

Today marks the beginning of Catho-lic Schools’ Week. This is a time in which Catholic schools across our country celebrate ourselves and what makes us who we are. It is a week of learning and fun! Catholic Schools’ Week is like a ‘spirit week.’ What makes it different from traditional spirit weeks is that it is a Spirit week, as in the celebration of the Holy Spirit filling our hearts and lives as we live out our faith in ac-tion. We are able to call on God and actively pray and worship, bringing God into all that we do.

One question that I am asked is: “Why should I send my child or grandchild to a Catholic school?” There are so many answers to that question. I will often ask parents where they went to school and often receive the response that they went to Catholic school. They then tell me that they received a quality educa-tion that prepared them for the fu-ture. There are many other reasons to attend Catholic schools, particu-larly Christ the King.

Christ the King Catholic School has withstood the test of time. In a city where there used to be over 60 Catholic schools, CK is one of only four that remains active. We offer an education that is built on faith and academic knowledge. We teach the importance of service to others. We believe that education is a partner-ship between the school and the par-ents. We focus on teaching our stu-dents to be respectful, responsible, ready, and reflective in all that they do.

Catholic schools also set higher stan-dards for student achievement. One of the biggest adjustments for fami-lies choosing a Catholic education and students who are acclimating is

the advanced grading scale and rigor that we have at Christ the King. However, we work together to help each child reach his or her unknown potential.

St. Francis abandoned riches and comfort in order to become a poor man among the poor. He understood that true joy and riches do

not come from the idols of this world – material things and the possession of them – but are to be found only in following Christ and serving others. Less well known, perhaps, is the moment when this understanding took concrete form in his own life. It was when Francis embraced a leper. This suffering brother was the “mediator of light ... for Saint Francis of Assisi, because in every suffering brother and sister that we embrace, we em-brace the suffering Body of Christ.

Forgiveness does not erase the past, but it sketches a brighter future.

EVENTS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

A Devised Theater Piece for the Elephants in the Living Room

Monday, February 4, 1:30pm Alumnae Hall—Marygrove College

8425 W McNichols

Detroit Mercy Theater Company is pre-senting a devised theater piece for the Elephants in the Living Room entitled America Privilege, conceived and di-rected by Brother Damian Torres-Bortello, SJ. This was developed through the collaboration from Detroit Mercy theater students as a response to the current climate in America around prejudice, discrimination and antago-nism of persons with diverse identities. The topic for American Privilege came from a theater workshop Brother Damian ran in the spring 2018, with different topics such as racism, women's rights and immigration. One theme seemed to connect all different themes, and that was privilege. Most of these issues have hurt communities in our country, according to Brother Damian. In response, citizens have resisted against these oppressions, finding em-powerment to overcome injustice, either collectively or individually.

American Privilege is made possible by a grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. A free will offering will be taken up in lieu of tickets.

Doors open at 1:00 PM. A Q&A will fol-low the play.

No lunch will be served for this event. Please RSVP Tom Kyle at [email protected] or at 248 987 2223
