101,596,951. Notably, Virginia Beach was featured in top

tier print and online publications The New York Times, The

Mayor William D. Sessoms, Jr., his wife Beverly, Deputy City Manager Doug Smith, Police

Chief Jim Cevera and I had the honor of attending the Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-

Fort Story change of command ceremony on Wednesday, July 13.

Capt. Daniel J. Senesky will assume

the position of commander, relieving

Capt. Frank E. Hughlett, the third

commander of the Joint

Expeditionary Base (JEB) since

February 2013. Capt. Hughlett retired

immediately following the change of

command, bringing 30 years of naval

service to a close.

The Virginia Beach Mayor's Commission on Aging (MCOA) is now accepting nominations

for its annual awards for service to seniors in the community. Every year, the MCOA recognizes

individuals and groups in the community whose service to seniors has been exceptional. This

service must extend beyond work that is required with their employment responsibilities.

Deadline for submitting nominations is Monday, Oct. 3. The awards will be presented at the

annual Senior Showcase on Wednesday, Oct. 26.

For more information and nomination forms, visit www.VBgov.com/aging.

The City of Virginia Beach held blood drives in June as part of the Red Cross Mayor’s Cup

initiative. The results are in, and our organization contributed 499 donations! Those donations

will save up to 1,497 lives, a true testament to the care our members show for their communities.

The Red Cross determines the Mayor’s Cup trophy winner based on

the percentage of employees donating. The City of Virginia Beach

percentage was 8.60%, compared to the winning locality at 8.68 %–

a difference of .08%. Though we did not win the Mayor’s Cup, our

organization donated 203 more units of blood than any other

municipality in the region. That is a huge success for our

organization and for those in need of life saving blood in our region.

Thank you to Neva White from Public Libraries for coordinating

the City’s blood drive and to all of the department representatives for

lending a helping hand.

In support of the ViBe Creative District, Councilmember Amelia Ross-Hammond attended an

event at Croc’s 19th Street Bistro to celebrate local artists and local farmers. Some of the artists

(pictured) created the murals in the front entrance of the restaurant.

The Virginia Beach Clean Community Commission, with support from Public Works/Waste

Management, completed its fourth Helping Hands project of the year on Saturday, July 9. The

Helping Hands Program freely provides one-time assistance to residents who are physically

and financially unable to perform outside yard maintenance themselves. Chair Daniel Baxter and

Vice-Chair Larry Banks led 22 military and Commission volunteers on this beautification project

in Kempsville. The residents, unable to tackle these projects themselves, were elated to see their

yard transformed in hours. If interested in lending a hand and helping a neighbor, call (757) 385-

3855 or visit www.VBgov.com/VBCCC.

Atlantic Shores’ Senior Summer Camp began its

fourth year of programming at the Sandler Center.

This free series is in partnership with Senior

Services of Southeastern Virginia, Bailafuzion

Dance Company and The Sandler Center

Foundation. Every Monday from June through

August, seniors can participate in a wide variety of

dancing dexterities, including Zumba, yoga, line

dancing, ballroom and much more.

The Virginia Beach Sheriff‟s Office recently launched Operation “Green Thumb”, a

program to provide inmates suffering from mental health issues with the opportunity to work

outside in the jail’s Inmate Garden. The goal is to help improve their overall wellbeing through

horticultural therapy at no added cost to taxpayers.

Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation’s Therapeutic Recreation

unit is gearing up for its annual Surf n’ Fun program on Saturday, July 16

and August 6, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for those ages 6 and up. Located at the

Pendleton Beach surfing area, this event is an incredible opportunity for

individuals with disabilities to carve up the waves and gives participants a

sense of exhilaration and pure joy. Space is still available for registration on

August 6. Contact: Therapeutic Recreation Programs, (757) 385-5990.

The graduation ceremony for the first Olongapo recruit

class of the Virginia Beach Fire Training Academy will take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday,

July 20, at the Virginia Beach Fire and EMS Training Center. The ceremony will stream live

to our sister city, Olongapo, Philippines, and both Mayor Sessoms and Mayor Paulino will

provide remarks.
