1. INTRODUCTION

Citations mentioned in scholarly communication are guide to other researchers working in

same field. Citations or the references mentioned in theses or dissertations are used as a tool

to know the information seeking pattern of researchers of the institute. Citation analysis is a

technique of bibliometric study of literature based upon some degree of relationship between

citing and cited articles or documents. Citation analysis is used to know which periodicals are

most productive in a particular field of knowledge. It is used to identify the pattern of

publication, authorship, citation and secondary journal’s coverage. The earliest citation

analysis carried out by Gross and Gross in the year 1927. He attempted to rank the journals in

Chemistry.

Crop Physiology is a branch of Agricultural sciences which deals with the study about

seed physiology, seed structure, and morphological physiological and biochemical changes

during seed development. University of Agricultural Sciences Dharwad is established in the

year 1986. University is offering UG, Doctoral and Post-Doctoral programmes in Agricultural

Sciences and Home Science. The first PhD awarded by the Department of Crop Physiology

earlier the department known as Agricultural Botany in the year 1987

2. OBJECTIVES

The study carried out with following objectives

To find the number of doctoral theses submitted per year.

To know the bibliographic forms approached by researchers.

To find the degree of collaboration authorship in Crop Physiology.

To study the geographic distribution of publications

To study the age wise distribution of citations and to calculate the obsolescence of

publications in Crop physiology

To prepare the rank list of journals.

3. HYPOTHESIS

Journals are most approached by researchers than other forms

Collaborative authorship is high

Indian publications are cited more compared to other countries

4. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Zipp( 1996 ) not only analyzes the citations of the dissertations to evaluate the collection of

the library specialized in Geology, but also studies the citations of the articles published by

the researchers and compares both results. Gooden ( 2001 ) analyzes the Ph.D. dissertations of

the Ohio State University Chemistry Department between 1996 and 2000. The conclusion

reached is that only 12 journals are necessary to cover 50 percent of the references and

demonstrates that most of the citations correspond to articles published in scientific journals.

Shafi and Gazi (2005) studied citations of Doctoral Thesis submitted to Kashmir University in

Natural Sciences. They analyzed 11,862 citations for identifying bibliographic form, citation

potential, journal ranking and to study the obsolescence rate..

Prashant P. Deshmukh ( 1998 ) under took study of citation analysis of Ph. D. Theses

submitted to Punjabrao Krishi vidya peeth during 1990 – 94 for the doctoral degree under the

guidance of P. S. G. Kumar. . The Phd theses accepted in the duration 1990 -94 are the source

for the study. There are 89 theses accepted to award doctoral degree. Total 11698 citations are

analyzed to find the format of citations, authorship pattern, core journals, geographical

distribution of publications, Age wise distribution of citations. The study also extended to

check the availability of resources which are cited in doctoral theses. The subjects come under

agricultural sciences taken for study are, Agricultural chemistry, Agriculture Economics,

Agriculture extension education, Agronomy, Botany, Entomology, Horticulture, Plant

Pathology and Veterinary sciences Banateppanvar, Koteppa, Biradar, B.S., and

Kannappanavar B.U. (2013)studied the citations appended on doctoral theses of botany,

submitted to the Kuvempu University during the years 2000-2006 to suggest in collection

development of the library.

5. SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The present study is Citation analysis of Doctoral thesis of Crop Physiology submitted to

University of Agricultural Sciences Dharwad in the duration 1987 to 2013. There are 36

doctoral theses submitted to the department of Crop Physiology in the duration 1987 to 2013

in University of Agricultural Sciences Dharwad. These 36 theses having 7498 citations.

Citations are analyzed to check the Bibliographic form, Authorship pattern, Age wise

distribution, Geographic distribution, Language wise distribution of citations appended on the

theses of Crop Physiology.

6. METHODOLOGY

Simple citation counting is opted methodology for the present study. Each theses submitted in

the department of Crop Physiology in University of Agricultural Sciences Dhawad in the

duration 1987 to 2013 are approached physically. The bibliographic information of every

thesis i.e. title of the thesis, researcher name, guide name, thesis number, year of submission

are recorded in a particular format in Excel sheet. The citations are also entered in excel sheet

for the analysis. The Author, Title, Journal Name/Book Title/conference name, type of

resource (journal/book/proceedings/reports) , Year of publication, Place(country) of

publication are recorded in excel sheet. Place of publications of Journal articles are found by

searching them in Worldcat, NBM catalogue, and through the google.

7. RESULTS AND ANALYSIS

There are total 36 Ph Ds awarded in the duration 1987 to 2013 in the department of crop

physiology of University of Agricultural Sciences Dharwad. The year wise distribution of

theses is given in the following Table 1. The data shows that on an average every year at least

one Ph.D. is awarded by the department. The number of theses increased after 1990. The

7.1. Bibliographic form wise distribution of citations

Crop physiology scientists approached journals, books, reports, statistics, survey reports,

proceedings of conferences/workshops/seminars/symposiums for their research work. The

data is presented in the following Table 2. The data obtained reveals that researchers prefer

and rely on journal articles most. 75.5 % of the citations are journal articles. The rest 24.5% of

citations are Books (9.5%) , Proceedings (5.45) Theses MSc and PhD ( 3.8%) Newsletter (1.5

%) Annual reports ( .9%) Reports (.89%), Abstracts, newspapers, Monographs, E-Resources,

Hand books, manuals, survey reports etc.. All together form 24.5%. The data proved the first

hypothesis journals are most preferable form of information for the researchers. Journals gives

nascent and authentic information and time barrier is less compared to book s and other forms

of resources. Hence the researchers always prefer journals for their information need.

7.2. Chronological distribution of citations

The chronological distribution of citations is given the table 3. It is found from data that the

oldest citation cited in crop physiology Ph D theses is 1831. The citations published in the

duration 1831 to 1950 found in theses is 236 (3.2 %). The research data reveals that

researchers cited highest citations 29.6 % of citations (2216) which are published in the

duration 1981 to 1990. Very least number of citations cited after 2010 as data chosen for the

study theses submitted in the duration 1987-2013 . This data shows that researchers referred

latest literature.

7.3. Authorship Pattern

Authorship study is one of the important application of bibliometric study, this is to find the

author productivity, impact factor of authors, ranking of authors based on the citations cited

by the particular author. Here authorship pattern is studied to find the degree of collaboration.

Most of the scientific studies are carried in collaboration as the studies cannot be handled by

single person most of the time. Most of the experiments inventions researches carried out with

team in research institutes. The following table 4 is about the distribution of citations on the

base of its authorship. The found data revealed that only 28.74% citations are single authored

and rest all multiple authored. Researchers cited some citations i.e. annual reports, reports

which are authored by corporate authorship they are about 0.6% .

7.4. Geographic Distribution of citations

Geographic distribution of citations is computed to know which country is productive in the

particular subject area. The present study is aimed to know the publications from which

country is referred more by researchers in Crop Physiology of UAS Dharwad. The following

table No. 6 gives the data regarding country wise distribution of citations. Indian publications

are approached more frequently than other countries. Publications which are published in

India are cited most and India ranked first i.e it is about 36.9 % of citations are from India.

The USA ranked second covers 28.03% and UK ranked third covers 8.52% of citations.

Researchers approached worldwide literature for their research fulfillment. There were some

citations whose place of publication could not identify. There are 89 such citations 1.18% of

total citations. The following chart and table 6 illustrates geographical distribution of citations

7.5. Citation Frequency for Crop Physiology

Table 7 shows the age wise dispersion of cited books and journal articles . It is clear from the

following table 7 the one fourth of citations i.e. 25 % of book citations are 15 years old and 50

% of total citations are 25 years old. 75 % of the citations are 35 years old hence the books in

crop physiology will become obsolete after 35 years.

Table 8 reveals that the 25 % of citations are 9 years old and 50% of citations are 16 years

old hence the half-life of journal articles is 16 years for the crop physiology and 75% of

citations are 25 years old hence the journal articles will become obsolete after 25 years in crop

9. FINDINGS

In the present study 7498 citations from 36 theses in Crop Physiology submitted to UAS

Dharwad were analyzed . The study reveals the following findings

The highest number of PhDs awarded from the Department of Crop Physiology in UAS

Dharwad in the duration 1995-1999 & 20047-2007 i.e. 8 (22.2%). Average number of citation

per thesis found 208

Researchers cited journal articles more than other form of resources. Out of 7498 citations

5667 citations are of journal articles. The major part of citations are of Books, Proceedings

Theses and Reports. From table 2 the data proved the first hypothesis of the research that

researchers prefer most journals for their research

Publications published in the duration 1981-1990 i. e. 2216 citations are highest cited.

Publications published in the duration 1991-2000 ranked second. The data reveals that

researchers refer latest information resources.

Citations studied found multiple authored more than single authored. There are 2155 (28.4%)

citations are only single authored remaining citations are two, three, four, five, six, seven, more

than seven and corporate authors. The degree of collaboration is found in the Crop Physiology

is 0.76. The data proves the second hypothesis that collaboration is high.

Page 13: CITATION ANALYSIS OF PH. D THESES IN CROP …Crop Physiology is a branch of Agricultural sciences which deals with the study about seed physiology, seed structure, and morphological

http://www.iaeme.com/IJLIS/index.asp 112 [email protected]

Publications published from India are cited most in theses. Indian publications ranked first

.2774 citations 36.9% of total citations are cited in doctoral dissertations of Crop Physiology,

The Publications from USA and UK are ranked second and third respectively ie 2102 citations

( 28.03%) and 641 (8.52%).. This proves the third hypothesis of the study that researchers

cited Indian publications more than of other countries

It is found from study that half-life for books publication is 25 years and after 35 year books

will become obsolete in crop Physiology. Half-life for journals in Crop Physiology is 16 years

and after 25 years journals will be obsolete.

Journal rank list is prepared based the frequency of appearance in the citations of doctoral

dissertations. Plant Physiology & Crop Science of USA are ranked first. Agronomy journal of

USA and Indian Journal of plant physiology ranked second.

10. CONCLUSIONS

Citation analysis of dissertations and assignments of students will help to know the

information seeking behavior of students. The data is very helpful in making decision in

collection management of the library. The obsolete literature can be weeded to make space for

recent required literature. Journal ranking based on the citations in dissertations can be

considered in subscription of journals for the library. The growing rate of information

resources and limited budget, Librarian must be selective for information resources which are

useful and needed for his/her user community. The citation analysis is very helpful tool in

making decisions in selecting or rejecting information resources for the library. The present

study is an attempt to seek the information need of the Crop Physiology researchers in

University of Agricultural Sciences Dharwad.
