LearningWho is Level 7 Executive Diploma designed to serve? This qualification has been devised to provide an

opportunity for progression for full members who have

already earned their designatory letters, MCIPS. Theymay have achieved MCIPS recently or some time ago.

Indeed, entry to Level 7 is via MCIPS only, whatever the

route taken to achieve it - including the Graduate

Diploma, the PDP route, Accredited Degree, Corporate

Award, NVQ level 4 or any other specialist arrangements

approved by CIPS that lead to MCIPS.

How long does qualification take?

It is likely to be anywhere between eighteen months andtwo years, depending upon the centre of your choice. The

programme is designed to provide sufficient time for

learning, plus personal and professional development. It

maximises the opportunity to see projects determined

and fulfilled, and to successfully deliver a challenging but

realistic learning curve.

What learning methods are involved? The overall aim is to enable candidates to undertake a

“self-managed” learning approach - to analyse their

own aspirations and motivations in the context of theirown career, but also in the context of the organisations

within which they work.

In order to complete the CIPS Level 7 Executive

Diploma, individuals will be supported by personal

facilitation and tutoring, action learning sets and

mentors. This triad of support is designed to maximise

personal fulfilment of ambitions but also to deliver

powerful business and commercial benefits.

Newperspectives

Taking you beyond your currentunderstanding of your chosenarea of learning

Climbing the learning curve with others:One of the major benefits of self-managed learning is

the opportunity to work and learn with other purchasing

professionals. This is formalised by the term: action

learning sets.

Action learning sets take joint responsibility for working

together to enhance and empower the self-managed

learning experience - acting as critical friends, honest

evaluators and a powerful support infrastructure.

Groups of learners who work together within the

programme are often better able to gain new

perspectives from their independence.

Learners are most challenged when working on unfamiliar

problems in unfamiliar settings. This is where it becomes

possible to unfreeze previous ways of doing things and to

develop new and productive ways of thinking.

By working co-operatively with others on real issues,

individuals can move to a higher level of learning and

experience, which will be beneficial on a day-to-day

basis, with opportunities to relate learning to different

organisational job roles.

What is self-managed learning? This learning approach is intended to be:

• Strategic – determining long-term strategies for

personal and professional growth in the context of the organisation.

• Self-structured – with content designed on an

individual needs basis and determined by

individuals to meet their own learning needs. The

learning plan and syllabus content will also be

designed to meet individual needs, but in the

context of high-level learning outcomes.

• Dependent on others – using a learning process

which requires individuals to integrate and interact

with peers who are also embarking upon the self-managed learning approach, thereby creating

action learning sets.

• Challenging – demanding and requiring significant

commitment on personal and professional levels.

An additional component of this learning style

involves undertaking literature research

methodologies designed to enable you to evaluate a

broader range of literature, taking you beyond current

understanding of your chosen area of learning. Thiswill deliver a deeper understanding of knowledge,

enabling you to challenge concepts and theories in

the context of your learning, but also to apply them to

your own personal and professional development.

How does the assessment system work? The assessment includes four pieces of work directly

aligned with each element of learning:

• a strategic learning contract

• a literature review

• a business project

• a self-review and evaluation.

The assessment approach is supported by CIPS asthe Awarding Body seeks to:• Assess a combination of skills and the application of

knowledge linked to the development and

implementation of the project. This may be handled

through observational assessment, written project

documents, reviews and self-evaluation.

• Assess against a framework of generic learning

outcomes based upon academic learning combined

with a demonstration of innovative and effective

professional practice.

• Assess the continuous progression of candidates and

their willingness to be flexible, dynamic, versatile,

change-oriented and responsive to the views of the

action learning sets, in addition to candidate

participation in the action learning set as a peer

member.

An overall portfolio of work must be presented including

all four elements of assessment, final work and

supporting evidence. Candidates must complete and

succeed in each element in order to achieve the

Executive Diploma.
