What is “Cinco de Mayo”?
On May 5, 1862, Mexico won a battle against France.
So what?
Mexico went on to become independent, and no European power has invaded North America since.
But… why are we learning this in English class?30 million people living in the United States are either from Mexico or part of a Mexican family.
That’s 10% of the population!!!!
Not Mexican or Mexican-AmericanMexican or Mexican-American
Cinco de Mayo in the US
May 5th is now a day to celebrate Mexican culture and for Mexican people to have pride in their country and culture.
Mariachi at a baseball game!
Cinco de Mayo in a school with Michelle Obama!
Baile folklorico in a parade!
How did Clara celebrate?
Yesterday, I went to a Mexican restaurant in Vigo. I saw all my American friends there and we all said, “Happy Cinco de Mayo” to each other. I also said it to my Mexican roommate when I saw her in the morning. We ate guacamole and enchiladas. I came home and wrote this paragraph!
