Chorlton TradersEstablished in 2012, initially to raise money for Christmas lights, Chorlton Traders has had a busy year. Businesses large and small have worked together to raise funds for local good causes, improve the appearance of Chorlton, establish and develop relationships with other local community groups and meet up regularly to share ideas, concerns and information.

In the Spring, Chorlton Traders, in partnership with Green Chorlton, successfully applied for part funding from Manchester City council for planters along Wilbraham Road and at Chorlton crossroads. We hope you’ll agree that they’ve proved a colourful improvement.

Traders have been looking after the planters, watering and weeding them and clearing any litter. Please help us to keep them looking good over the autumn and winter by keeping them tidy.

You might also have noticed the thriving planters at Chorlton library, planted up by Chorlton Traders, Chorlton Plant Swap and Green Chorlton and regularly watered by Chorlton Library staff. Please do harvest the edibles when they are ready – there are tomatoes, alpine strawberries, nasturtium flowers and leaves and plenty of tasty fresh herbs.

Plastic milk bottle tops Chorlton Traders are collecting milk bottle tops to help raise money for a much-needed wheelchair. Please take your (washed) milk bottle tops (red, green or blue) to Elliotts in Chorlton precinct and put them in the giant milk bottle. A big thank you to Barbakan, Tea Hive,

Simon Dunn, On the Corner and Battery Park for regular ongoing donations.

Events coming up…Chorlton Plant Swap on Saturday 21st September will be at Chorlton Market. Bring along any surplus plants and seeds to swap. Or pick up surplus plants for a small donation.

Chorlton Book Festival is an annual community event which takes place every November and Chorlton Traders are looking for sponsors and partners for it. If your business is interested, please contact us at [email protected] and if you’d like to donate a children’s book (from the Chorlton Book Award shortlist) for distribution by the Barlow Moor Community Association to widen participation in the Book Award, please ask for details in Chorlton Bookshop.

The winner of the recent ‘Women’s prize for fiction’ this really doesn’t need any further recognition.

On the off chance though

that somebody in the South Manchester area hasn’t read it I think it deserves a bit more attention. Within the first 20 pages we have a car crash, a breakdown, a murder and a divorce. There certainly can’t be any complaints about pace.

The story begins on Thanksgiving at a house in the upmarket suburb of Westchester, not far north of Manhattan. Harry is visiting his younger but much more successful brother, George. George runs a TV network and has serious anger issues. Harry is an academic who can only afford to live in Manhattan thanks to his successful but unemotional wife. Following the meal, George’s wife kisses Harry and Harry likes it. This is

the beginning of a whole chain of events which will end with George under psychiatric care in a secure unit. At every turn dark humour seeps in to show the ludicrous way bureaucracy is used and abused. The events in the story become almost farcical but the author manages to stop it becoming out and out farce by regularly injecting doses of reality. So much happens in the story there really isn’t a dull moment. It’s hard to believe it’s not double the length.

This book has moments of absolute comedy gold however it’s not one for sensitive types. If you fancy a good satirical look at American family life and American society then this is a must read for you.

Pereira MaintainsAntonio Tabbuchi

Although not a new book this is a novella we were recently introduced to at our bookshop book group.

A thought provoking read

which is beautifully written. Published in Italian in 1993 it was translated into English two years later.

Set in Lisbon 1938, it’s best described as historical/political fiction. The Pereira of the title is a local journalist by the name of Dr Pereira. He’s a lonely and depressed man not really noticing the world around him. He edits the culture page on a government controlled newspaper. This is how he comes to meet the mysterious Monterio Rossi who he believes will write insightful and beautiful obituaries for cultural figures of importance. Although clearly no journalist, Rossi helps bring Pereira back into the real world in the most shocking way

possible. Along the way we see, with comic results, Pereira’s attempts to lose weight at the fashionable spas of the day. Through these trips he does meet some very interesting people and begins to notice the dark clouds of fascism gathering around him.

Almost every sentence begins “Pereira maintains”. This could become repetitive and dull but adds an almost poetic style to the writing. It also leaves the reader with the question why is he constantly using the term ‘Maintain’? This is an unusual little gem of a book which went down really well at our book group. It’s a real treat which will take little more than an afternoon to read.

The weekend of the 28th September will see Chorlton Green and the Jockey host a weekend festival of live music, kids entertainment, cider bar, stocks of international beers and a bustling farmers’ market.

Exciting plans are forming for this year’s Joktoberfest at the Horse and Jockey.

Sponsored by Black Jack Beers, Conwy Brewery, Black Edge Brewery, Little Valley Brewery & Three B’s Brewery, Joktoberfest is a play on the traditional German Oktoberfest, a 16-day Bavarian festival. Originally an agricultural celebration its focus

transformed from agriculture to beer, and currently attracts over six million visitors a year.

The Joktoberfest will coincide with the monthly farmers’ market that holds over 25 stalls teeming with artisan and local produce. Set to incorporate children’s rides and activities, both on the Green and in the pub, the festival will entice families and drinkers for a fun weekend.

The music line-up boasts some of Manchester’s finest bands; such as Dr. Butler’s Hatstand Medicine Band, Becca Williams from Becca and the Broken Biscuits, James Kelly and

Tom Edney. Saturday’s full day of musical entertainment will climax with the haunting sound of Canter Semper. The entertainment continues into Sunday with the Brasswürst Bavarian Beer Band and the outstanding bluegrass band Bo Weaval.

The Horse and Jockey invites you to come down for this fun-free-for-all festival for a chance to get stuck into to some good beer, music and food. Looking forward to seeing you down there.

Now, as stories go it is a short one and as yet has no ending but it says something of what Chorlton was like at the beginning of the 20th century.

It began with a request to find out what I could about a house and very quickly became a fascinating piece of research which linked the township with Damascus.

The house was one of those big semi detached properties which was built sometime between 1893 and 1901. It was surrounded by gardens on three sides and had ten rooms spread over three floors with cellars.

On the ground floor there were four large rooms and the kitchen, while on the first floor there were four large bedrooms, a dressing room and bathroom and three more double bedrooms on the second floor.

This was a tall solid property of the sort much sought after by the wealthy business and professional classes.

Chorlton was still on the edge of much open countryside and yet the train from the station could whisk commuters into the heart of the city in just over ten minutes and within a few years of our house being built the Corporation extended the tram service along Barlow Moor Road and by 1913 this had been joined by another route that ran down Wilbraham Road and onto Withington.

Like most of these houses it had its own name carved onto the stone gate post. Such names are a common enough feature in the township but Damascus House was a little out of the ordinary

and was interestingly different to warrant a bit of search which led me to Abdallah Kabbaz

who lived there with his wife and two siblings from 1901 to sometime around 1911.

Mr Kabbaz had been born in Damascus in Syria and on the census return added that he was “a subject of the Ottoman Empire.”

At one time the Ottoman Empire had been a major power controlling much of southeast Europe, Western Asia and North Africa. It was a multinational, multilingual empire but one which by the 19th century was in decline.

During the 18th century it was challenged by Russia and through the following century by the emerging nationalism in various parts of its territories.

At one time the Ottoman Empire had been a major power controlling much of southeast Europe, Western Asia and North Africa.


decade after Britain and France had fought the Crimean War in an effort to halt Russian expansion into the Ottoman Empire.

Even before that war the Greeks had won their independence from the empire and during the 1860s and 70s parts of the Balkans moved towards semi independence.

So by the time he had arrived here the empire was struggling but it still controlled 28 million people, of whom 15.5 million were in modern-day Turkey, 4.5 million in Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and Jordan, and 2.5 million in Iraq. Another 5.5 million people were under nominal Ottoman rule in the Arabian peninsula.

Now I don’t know yet when he arrived but by the April of 1901 he was settled in Damascus House and had installed a telephone. Now this was not as unusual as you might think and a quick glance down the telephone directory shows that on either side of Mr Kabbaz were several others listed with phones.

It may have been connected with his business which he described as “Agent, Shipping Goods employer” and he and his brother had offices at 21 Cooper Street in Manchester.

Street up to Booth Street, but the southern end disappeared under Central Ref and the Town Hall extension and number 21 which was on the northern stretch has long vanished.

Nor were the Kabbaz family the only residents from the Empire. Just a little further away on High Lane was Mr Mouradian who had been born in Constantinople and was also in engaged in shipping, while just a few doors down from Damascus House lived Krikor Topalian also in shipping and also from Turkey.

Now there is nothing particularly unusual about all of this but I wonder how much of this would have been revealed if the name of the house had not survived on the gate post.

But there is much more that has yet to be revealed. The Kabbaz family had moved by 1911 and so far there is no trace. The house was occupied by a Mark E. Houldsworth in 1911, but he has proved a little elusive and in the census of that year this fine ten roomed house has but two servants listed in the property.

So Damascus House has much yet to tell us.

Step inside the Cemetery Gates you not only step into one of Manchester’s finest nature reserves; you walk into the peaceful grounds, which are now home to some of Manchester’s finest historical figures.

The cemetery office offers a list of ‘Notable Graves’ so you can find your way to the resting places of many Mancunians whose names are known much further away than Lancashire.

In this new regular feature Nola Chesworth introduces us to some of those characters.

John Cassidy, born in Ireland in 1860, moved to Manchester in his twenties where he studied sculpture at the Manchester School of Art; his works were exhibited on numerous occasions around Manchester between 1888 and 1935.

Several war memorials he sculptured are standing proud around the country, while fine examples of his work can still be found in Manchester.

Around the corner from his first studio at The Barton Arcade, inside the Town Hall are two relief plaques in bronze, one commemorating the first transatlantic flight made by

Alcock and Brown; the second of Alderman Sir Daniel McCabe, Lord Mayor between 1913 and

1915. Outside, the bronze creatures decorating the The Jubilee Fountain in Albert Square are some of Cassidy’s more unusual creations.

Three further examples of his work can be found in John Ryalnds library; a sculpture of John Rylands himself and of his wife Enriqueta; as well as three stone figures ‘Theology directing the labour of Science and Art.’ Another prominent Cassidy sculpture is the statue of Edward VII in Whitworth Park.

Cassidy died in 1939 and is buried in the Roman Catholic area of Southern Cemetery; his headstone recently restored, bears the words ‘His Hands Fashioned The Beauty He Saw.’

September is the time when summer fades and the garden is settling into a slower pace. It is also a good time to plant as the earth is still warm, and will remain so for a while yet, allowing the establishment of root systems.

It is a particularly good time to think about the structure of your garden and the positioning of hard working evergreen or winter flowering shrubs to form the backdrop to the shorter lived perennial borders. Shrubs that have the added bonus of scented flowers in winter and spring are definitely worth considering.

When I lived in a flat off Corkland road fifteen years ago and long before I had any notion of doing anything horticultural, I remember being entranced by the most intoxicating smell I had ever experienced on my early spring walk to the bus stop. I had no idea what the plant was but vowed to have one in my garden as soon as I had something more than a car park.

That shrub turned out to be a Viburnum x burkwoodii flowering from winter to late spring and producing a scent you’ll never be without again. The problem with many shrubs is size and aspect

especially in small gardens, so you will have to be selective about what you choose.

The V. x burkwoodii reaches 2m but a smaller variety is V. juddii that might be worth trying (1.5m). Another large shrub with lovely scent in spring is Osmanthus delavyi or O. x burkwoodii with pretty jasmine like flowers (3m).

A summer flowering shrub well known to many is Philadelphus (mock orange) but again this can get quite rangy if left unattended despite its captivating scent. For autumn scent you could try the common Eleagnus x ebbingei which isn’t the most pretty but acts as a good foil to other plants (3m), or the evergreen Osmanthus heterophyllus flowering in mid-late autumn.

Some of my favourites are the winter flowering Daphnes. The Daphne odora x transatlantica group and more common D. aureomarginata are also good for smaller places as they form compact, neat dome-like shrubs (1m).

we are re-running:

"A Fantastic Introduction"

I’ve been lucky to live in and around Chorlton for the last 24 years and for much of this time my habitual route into the centre of Chorlton has taken me along Manchester Road.

Of course, for years I thought it was Barlow Moor Road. It’s not. Let’s be clear. The crossroads in the centre of Chorlton is where Barlow Moor Road meets Wilbraham Road. But if you head towards the Library, you’ll very soon find yourself on Manchester Road. Just as soon, in fact, as you pass the Beagle on your right and the pigeon tree on your left.

Manchester Road is home to two Grade II listed buildings; the Sedge Lynn and now Chorlton Library. Councillor Victor Chamberlain has succeeded in his application to have it listed, meaning developers cannot radically alter its look and feel without special permission.

Of course Manchester Road has changed a lot over the years. Unicorn and Barbakan have continued to develop and thrive, serving not only local residents, but attracting shoppers from much further afield. I think they’ve also played a significant role in attracting quirky and independent businesses to the road. Pad arrived in 2007; they’re offering 15% off until the end of October [that’s Christmas shopping sorted, Ed.].

Despite the recent very sad closure of Monkey Puzzle Toys there are new businesses opening up like Adams Chippy and relative newcomer Tea Hive is expanding upstairs – great news for cake lovers! Their themed evenings have proved very popular; this month it’s ‘A Taste of Provence’ on 27th September.

Finally, on the third Saturday of the month Manchester Markets sets up outside the library with stalls selling edible delights, handmade gifts and this month Chorlton Plant Swap will have a stall too. Please bring along your surplus plants and seeds to swap. See you there!

Chorlton’s Village Dry cleaners was set up by husband and wife team Masoud and Nooshin back in the autumn of 1982. Their background had been in clothing manufacture and in tailoring respectively so when it came to fabrics they had a wealth of experience. From the outset, they worked hard to build up the reputation of the business, gaining a name for themselves for outstanding cleaning with friendly customer service.

When their children were old enough to help out, their son and daughter used to come in on Saturdays and school holidays but it was their son Amir who took a real interest in the business. Learning his trade at his father’s side, Amir spent over 25 years working alongside Masoud.

In 2008 Masoud decided it was time to retire and Amir took over the reins. Since taking over, Amir decided that The Village Dry Cleaners of Chorlton would be the best cleaners in Manchester. He has invested heavily in the latest machinery and technology which not only offers superb cleaning but is also more environmentally friendly.

He did not stop there; he has modernised the whole shop, with glass frontage making a clean and airy space, and new interior décor which gives a more boutique look. Outside there is customer parking and

a new ramp giving easy access for wheelchairs and parents with pushchairs.

He further modernised the business by adding late night opening hours on a Thursday and by creating a very sleek and extensive website which is well worth checking out.

The Manchester Gestalt Centre was founded in 1988 in a quiet and leafy part of Fallowfield and has been offering psychotherapy, counselling, supervision and training for over 25 years.

The five experienced and qualified psychotherapists offer therapy and counselling to individuals, couples and groups.

What is Gestalt Therapy?

Gestalt is a creative and experiential therapy.

It challenges and supports us to look at and expand our potential, through becoming more aware of how we get, or don’t get, our needs met. This

greater awareness leads to a more choiceful life.

Gestalt has many different influences and strands and works with body, emotions and mind. It’s a counselling and psychotherapy approach which looks at living more effectively in the present moment and emphasises developing a better way of relating to ourselves, others and the wider environment.

Courses for the Community

The Gestalt Centre offers short courses for the Manchester Community including: How to Be More Assertive, De-stressing and Relaxation, Loss

and Bereavement, Coping with Change, Listening to our Dreams, and Being in a Long Term Relationship.

Continuing Professional Development

As well as offering courses for the general public, there’s a substantial CPD training programme for people interested in developing their interpersonal and therapeutic skills. Many courses are suitable for counsellors and other professionals, such as body work in therapy, working with shame and anger, mindfulness, attachment issues etc.

The centre also runs an accredited psychotherapy programme, which can lead to becoming a fully qualified psychotherapist.

There are several meditation centres in Chorlton, but this is first and oldest. having occupied this place for 35 years. The meditation centre was once the hall of a Methodist church and the land has been converted into a pleasant garden where you might see people doing Tai Chi on a Saturday morning.

We practise Theravada Buddhism, which will be familiar to anyone who has taken a

holiday in Sri Lanka or Thailand. Inside there is a shrine room centred on a large and beautiful Thai image of the Buddha.

We offer ‘Samatha’ meditation, which means ‘calm’. Classes, starting on September

16th, are every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 8pm, Mondays at 1.30pm and Saturdays at 11am. They’re open to all with the Tuesday evening session being particularly designed for under 25s.

Although our meditation has strong roots in Buddhist traditions, it is not necessary to be a Buddhist to practise, and

people of every faith and none have enjoyed it and found it beneficial.

Also coming up are a 6-week mindfulness course starting on 2 September, and monthly public talks on topics related to the spiritual quest.

Brigid Benson is looking tanned and relaxed following her holiday

in the South of France. But now that she’s back, she’s raring to go.

“Gaeia is celebrating its 20th Birthday with a series of events in September and October, including the launch of the Band on the Wall Foundation, so there’s a lot to get sorted”

Brigid is well known in the world of ethical investment and is a pioneer, having set up Gaeia, her own ethical financial advice company, back in 1993.

WHALLEY Range Cricket and Tennis Club has secured Olympic legacy funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund.

Whalley Range Cricket and Lawn Tennis Club will receive £23,870 of National Lottery Funding to revamp the Men’s changing rooms, restore the Ladies changing room, install a disabled toilet and baby-changing facilities, extend the clubhouse, provide ramps for disabled access, and provide secure housing for the groundsman’s machinery and equipment.

The total cost of the project will be £38,000, additional funding being provided by Manchester city council, NatWest Community Trust and the club

itself.

Sport England’s chair Nick Bitel, said: “A year on from the Olympics, this is helping us deliver a lasting legacy.

“With investment now on offer until 2017, we look forward to supporting many more clubs, who play such a vital role in grassroots sport, in and around Manchester.”

Club chairman, Mike Hill, added: “We’re improving our facilities every year, and growing our membership, but this allows a quantum leap in quality of the sporting experience. We feel we are at last going to be able to provide 21st century facilities for the

local community.”

The club is planning a celebratory open-day for mid-September, when the summer holidays and Ramadan are over.
