Even though we’ve seen the back of Summer, there’s no reason to hibernate just yet. This month Chorlton Fireworks (page 5) and Celebration Party Shop (page 26) will provide everything you need to light up the sky with their ranges of fireworks.

It’s time to start planning for the festive season, so if you’d like to reach 20,000 homes before Christmas, get in touch by October 15th and book your advert.

Chorlton Traders are looking for businesses to donate to the Christmas lights, so if you want to be involved in making Chorlton a winter wonderland, have a read of their article on page 4.

But if the weather is making you feel a little glum, take a leaf from Majunaga’s book and look for some peace inside yourself. See page 22 for a preview of his enlightening ‘Reflections’ blog.

Chorlton TradersEstablished in 2012, initially to raise money for Christmas lights, Chorlton Traders has had a busy year. Businesses large and small have worked together to raise funds for local good causes, improve the appearance of Chorlton, establish and develop relationships with other local community groups and meet up regularly to share ideas, concerns and information.

Christmas Lights Chorlton Traders are once again leading the fundraising for Chorlton Christmas lights.

Chorlton Locksmith is the collection point for donations from businesses on Wilbraham Road, and Elliotts is the collection point for businesses in Chorlton precinct. We are looking for volunteer businesses to act as collection points on Barlow Moor Road and Manchester Road. Can you help? Residents are also invited to help us raise funds by donating at the collection points or by buying raffle tickets for the Chorlton Traders Christmas raffle. Details to follow next month.

Chorlton Precinct Chorlton Trader member Alice de Ville has a vision to regenerate this neglected corner of the precinct with a regular Art & Design Market. Two dates are already fixed; 2nd November and then on 7th December.

She would also like to improve the look of the precint with murals, seating and planters. There is a kickstarter fund to get this fantastic project off the ground, which needs to raise £2,500 by 18th October. Chorlton Book Festival is an annual community event in the Chorlton calendar which takes place from Friday 15th to Saturday 23rd November. Chorlton Traders are supporting this event and for the first time there is a Chorlton Book Award.

Chorlton Children’s Book Award 2013

The Manchester Ramblers Association celebrated a victory against Manchester Council last July, when a district judge ruled that a disused footpath in Chorlton should be reopened after seventy years. Following consultation with local residents, the Council had tried to officially close Footpath 181 (which runs alongside Chorlton Brook between Anchorside Close and Chorltonville) on the grounds that it was unnecessary, would be expensive to reopen and could lead to an increase in criminal activity.But Judge Paul Richardson ruled that the footpath should remain a public right of way, finding that the Council

had “deceitfully fobbed off” local campaigners - led by Stephen Newton, a resident of Anchorside Close - who argued that the Council had repeatedly reneged on promises to clear the path in the past. A group of disgruntled Chorltonville residents, however, have refused to take the path of least resistance, and say the ruling only represents the views of a small minority: “Stephen Newton claims to represent everyone on Anchorside Close, but we know this isn’t the case. We visited the close, and found that many residents are as worried as we are about the potential increase in crime and anti-social behaviour.”Stephen Newton responded by saying: “We submitted evidence

to court of eight separate consultations with Anchorside residents. Our position was agreed at an AGM meeting in 2012, which was well attended, and where there was only one dissenting voice. Many residents made written submissions to court, all of which endorsed reopening the path.” The Council has now been ordered to pay £42,000 in legal fees, with a further estimated cost of £100,000 to make the path safe for public use – all at the tax payers’ expense. Liberal Democrat MP John Leech said: “I support going for closure, but it’s been the Council’s incompetence over the decades that’s led to this.”

Back in 1847, the journalist Alexander Somerville had walked the lanes of Chorlton looking for evidence of potato blight; that disease which had destroyed the crops in Ireland, and was already in parts of northern Derbyshire.

He didn’t find any but recorded his conversations with some of our local farmers, one of whom was James Higginbotham whose land included a strip along what is now the Rec on the corner of Beech Road and Cross Road.

The conversation turned away from potatoes to fruit which made up a significant part of the crops we grew for the Manchester markets and included raspberries, rhubarb, currants and gooseberries and above all apples and pears; in particular the Newbridge pear, and Rose of Sharon apple.

Look at any old maps from the mid 19th century and you are struck by the number of orchards across the township. Most would have gone to the markets, but some would have been turned into cider and perry and drunk at home.

So it was of particular concern to James Higginbotham that in the June of 1847 his apples and pears were doing well. As he said to

“The insects had made great havoc among the

fruit in the adjoining orchard during the hot sunny days of May and the first week of June, but the cold of last week and the rain of this had come in time to save still a good quantity.

He pointed to his Rose of Sharon apple trees which had bloomed so profusely as to be wonderful; they had been invaded by a terrible army of insects, and had hardly been able to maintain the conflict; but the myriads of diseased invaders wrapped in their winding sheets of cobwebs and laying upon the ground, where the rain had carried them, showed how beneficial the cold and rain had been.

There was still a goodly show of apples left, and the Rose of Sharon branches were again fresh, beautiful and healthy. The Newbridge pears clustered upon the trees as if the invaders of the orchard had never been.”*

It is a priceless piece of reporting and not just because here are the voices of the people who lived in Chorlton over 160 years ago but because it provides us with the actual names of what types of apples and pears were grown here.

And I am indebted to Mary Pennell of the National Fruit Collection** who kindly dug out some information about both crops. “Newbridge is in fact a ‘perry pear’. It is also known as ‘White Moorcroft’. Rose of Sharon - an apple variety that was exhibited from Cheshire in 1934. Unfortunately this is the only record for this apple but at least we know that it did at least exist at some stage.” All of which is very exciting, well to me anyway.

Our Newbridge pears were harvested from the first to the third week in October about the same time as the Rose of Sharon apples. Now, what for me is revealing is that here we have the first evidence that along with cider our farmers were growing perry pears and must have been making

perry. And for anyone unsure, perry is made in much the same way as cider.

And we can track down those of Mr Higginbotham to his orchard which was on land either side of what is now Crossland Road up as far as Higson Avenue.

But there were others dotted across the township.

Now, the productive life of an apple tree is about 30-40 years although some can go for 80 to a 100 years,** so with this in mind I doubt that any we find today will date from 1847, but you never know.

My old botanist chum David reckons that there are still orchards on the other side of the Mersey not far from Jackson’s Boat.

Which I think will be an adventure to come.

Having been given a lovely wooden handled bulb planter as a present, I was determined to go like the clappers, planting thousands of glorious bulbs in my garden last year.

Actually, it was more trouble than it was worth because the soil that satisfyingly and quickly came out of the ground then wouldn’t come out of the planter without a lot of coaxing which made the whole process annoying and it’s been relegated to the cupboard of other attractive, unnecessary garden items.

However, I am determined to get some bulbs in and October and November are the best times to do so. There is a vast range of bulbs to try at home and we can be tempted, glassy eyed, to buy enormous amounts of different varieties when faced with the lovely pictures of spring flowers on the internet. The thing to think about as always is location and preparation. Some bulbs like sun and well-drained conditions: Tulips (which can also be planted along the base of a dry hedge, which is handy), daffs and Fritillaries fall into this camp. Camassias like sun

and damp as do Leucojums (big snow drops) and there are bulbs for shade: Erythronium and Anemone nemerosa for example.

Growing bulbs in pots is always a good option because you can move the pots to the best vantage point for viewing when they’re in flower. Narcissus are particularly lovely in pots as a cheery spring burst of colour.

This year, I’m going to try some more unusual bulbs as an experiment. Two tulips have caught my eye – T.acuminate which has flame orange coloured, spidery petals and T. ‘Ice Cream’ which is brilliant because it actually looks like an ice cream.

On the same theme, Oxalis

versicolour has swirling vanilla ice cream petals that look like they’ve been drizzled with strawberry sauce. I’m also going to try the Allium amplectans ‘Graceful Beauty’ – one to be studied closely with its starry white flowers, purple stamen and pink centres like cup-cake decorations.

One to try for a pot is Sparaxis commonly called the Harlequin flower which looks like a cross between a Sysirinchium and Auricula flower. You’re looking for non-mouldy, plump, firm bulbs – aren’t we all – and get them in as soon as you buy them. For unusual bulbs try internet stockists Blomsbulbs, Sarah Raven and Kissmygrass.

Chorlton & District Rotary Club needs new members in order to survive and continue its work locally and internationally.

The Club meets every Wednesday evening at the Hough End Centre for a meal, for fellowship, to listen monthly to an invited speaker, and to organise the charitable actions of the club. The club regularly aids charitable local organisations such as St. Anne’s Hospice, and Francis House Childrens Hospice, gives illustrated dictionaries to primary school leavers, collects over 1000 second hand books a year to give away in Literacy Week, and participates in a

youth leadership scheme. It makes donations from time to time to such overseas bodies as Mercy Ships, Sightsavers, the Jaipur Limb Project, Disaster Aid, and Hope & Homes for Children. It supports Rotary International’s efforts to eradicate polio.

This work is funded mainly as a result of house to house collections at Christmas with collections at supermarkets at other times and special events from time to time. Every penny raised is distributed.

Formed at the beginning of this year, the Chorlton Design Collective already have one successful project under their belts when in June the group had the exciting opportunity of running a three week pop-up shop in Chorlton’s shopping precinct, The Chorlton Design Emporium. The shop was met with great enthusiasm from local people, which led to plans for a new project.

With fantastic support from the Manchester City Council, Chorlton Traders and Savills UK, the group are pleased to announce a new regular art and design market to be held on the first Saturday of each month. The first market will be

on Saturday 2nd November, followed by Saturday 7th December.

With the aim to bring colour and style to a neglected corner of the precinct, the Chorlton Art Market will be a vibrant and eclectic mix of local painters, photographers and sculptors. Along with this, there will be stalls featuring fantastic local small businesses, such as Bahari Blossom (handmade bathtime treats), BeLoved (exquisite handmade clothing) and Akhu Designs (beautiful handmade homewares). The next part of this project involves the creation of a series of murals on the walls in the market area; further breathing new life into this forgotten spot.

To us, it’s simply a blank canvas which has needed some TLC for a long time! We have a great team of artists working on designs which we hope to complete by the end of the year.

We’re still on the look out for more local artists who may be interested in taking a stall for either of the first two markets. The cost for a 3x3m pitch is £25 which includes a table and gazebo. We’re also interested in hearing from any local businesses who would consider sponsoring this project.

Grease and line a 20cm round tin with baking parchment.

Combine the polenta, caster sugar, baking powder, guar gum and ground almonds in a large bowl.

In a separate bowl whisk together the sunflower oil, eggs and pomegranate molasses.

Stir oil mixture into dry ingredients, add the grated orange zest and mix well.

Pour into prepared tin and bake in oven for 45mins or until an inserted skewer comes out clean.

While cake is baking make the syrup: place all syrup ingredients in a saucepan and heat gently until sugar has dissolved and the mixture becomes thick and syrupy (4-5 minutes). Add pomegranate seeds to syrup.

When cake is cooked remove from the oven skewer it all over while still hot and pour over the syrup. Decorate with cherries.

Leave to cool before removing from tin and enjoy with a steaming cuppa!

Chorlton’s Village Dry cleaners was set up by husband and wife team Masoud and Nooshin back in the autumn of 1982. Their background had been in clothing manufacture and in tailoring respectively so when it came to fabrics they had a wealth of experience. From the outset, they worked hard to build up the reputation of the business, gaining a name for themselves for outstanding cleaning with friendly customer service.

When their children were old enough to help out, their son and daughter used to come in on Saturdays and school holidays but it was their son Amir who took a real interest in the business. Learning his trade at his father’s side, Amir spent over 25 years working alongside Masoud.

In 2008 Masoud decided it was time to retire and Amir took over the reins. Since taking over, Amir decided that The Village Dry Cleaners of Chorlton would be the best cleaners in Manchester. He has invested heavily in the latest machinery and technology which not only offers superb cleaning but is also more environmentally friendly.

He did not stop there; he has modernised the whole shop, with glass frontage making a clean and airy space, and new interior décor which gives a more boutique look. Outside there is customer parking and

a new ramp giving easy access for wheelchairs and parents with pushchairs.

He further modernised the business by adding late night opening hours on a Thursday and by creating a very sleek and extensive website which is well worth checking out.

Amir is always looking for new ways to improve the business and stay ahead of the times whilst keeping that family feel and the friendly service that they are famous for.

So what is new at the Village?

Recently Amir has invested in one of the newest innovations in dry cleaning technology in the form of an Ozone machine. This can kill bacteria and eliminate odours without the use of potentially damaging chemicals. It’s particularly useful for getting rid of mould or the smell of clothes that may have been in storage for a long time and is proving to be very good at freshening up the Man Utd mascot Fred the Red!

Another new addition is the hydrocarbon machine which can clean the most delicate of fabrics and all clothes which require F cleaning.

The Village Dry Cleaners’ reputation for quality and professionalism has led it to become the first choice in cleaning for many of Manchester’s finest Bridal Boutiques so with so many delicate and ornate (not to mention expensive) dresses needing to be cleaned it is

essential that they have not only the best cleaning methods but also the safest.

Word has spread about the high standards employed and, particularly for bridal and vintage wear, people are travelling from far and wide to use their services. Amir can not only clean wedding dresses but also veils and shoes and can place them in a beautiful handmade preservation box to keep forever.

Another new line is the handbag cleaning and handbag care products. If you have an old beloved bag that has seen better days then take it in and see what they can do.

So what’s happening next?

A new computerised till which will make the dropping off and collecting of clothes a simpler process and which will notify customers via email when their clothes are ready for collection.

And finally a new loyalty card scheme which offers customers up to 20% discount off their cleaning bill and which replaces the old 3 for 2 offer, so no need to wait until you have 3 dirty suits to clean just come in and pick up your free customer card and loyalty bag and start saving straight away!

Chorlton Children’s Choir held its first rehearsal on Thursday 5th September and is calling on music-mad local children to come along to a free taster session! The new choir for 5 to 11 year olds will perform everything from Elbow to Elgar and Britten to Britpop, but most importantly there is NO NERVE-WRACKING audition process.

The choir will rehearse every term time Thursday, 5.45-6.45pm, leading to a full year of performances.

Morrisey of the Smiths once asked the question “Does the body rule the mind, or does

the mind rule the body?” and Morrisey is not the only person to have pondered such a question – the 17th century french philosopher Descartes had asked similar questions. He is famous for his dictum ‘I think therefore I am’ – the idea that thinking proceeds experience.

In Western thought we generally

view the body and the mind as separate entities. This results in a splitting and dualistic view of the mind and body. Eastern thought tends not to split the mind and body, which may be due to the practice of meditation having been an important part of oriental culture for thousands of years.

When, in yoga and meditation, we bring our full awareness to our embodied experience we notice a complexity of thoughts, feeling, emotions and sensations – all coming into our awareness and then passing away. The Buddhist view of mind holds a perspective that includes our feelings, bodily

sensations and emotions. As a yoga practitioner I have found it more helpful to view my mind as something that exists within my body rather than something that sits aloft at the top of my head, reducing me to experiencing the world within largely conceptual models (which often leaves me feeling more isolated and disconnected from myself and other people). By reclaiming our relationship to our bodies we experience a sense of arriving home again – what it means to be alive and human on this planet.

Whalley Range CC has been a great developer of junior talent in recent seasons with teams operating successfully at all levels. They have produced a string of players who’ve gone on to represent Manchester, Greater Manchester and Lancashire as well as the Netherlands and have over 100 youngsters enjoying cricket at the club.

This season the under 11 team won nine out of nine

league games! Their star bat is Subhaan Mahmood (pictured).

In the South Manchester Junior League batsmen have to retire after scoring 25 runs and Subhaan ended with an average in excess of 200.

He’s been selected for Lancashire u11’s and will still be eligible to play in this age group next season.

Range coach Francis Collins said: “Subhaan has an incredible talent plus the determination and work ethic to succeed at the highest levels. I’m delighted that Subhaan, along with the bulk of the team can continue to play in this age group in 2014.”

The Bowling Green Hotel in Chorlton have had great success this season in a range of competitions.

The ladies team won the final of the KO Cup in the Southern Ladies League beating Davyhulme by 222-206. In the Sale and District League their men’s team won division two to gain promotion to the top flight and they also won the Fives

competition.

In the Trafford Mixed League division three the second team reached third spot, their highest position for many

years while the first team, who won promotion to division one consolidated with a mid-table position.
