From the pastor.. Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time Are we spiritually retarded? The dictionary defines the word “retard” as a holding back or slowing down. Retarded (sometimes offen-sive) is defined as slow or limited in intellectual or emotional develop-ment or academic progress. Are we spiritually retarded or challenged? Is our prayer life limited to the Our Father, the Hail Mary or the Glory Be…? Do we only turn to God in our needs? Trivia questions often times hold our interest and curiosity. In today’s Gospel Jesus asks the Disciples – “But who do you say that I am? “ Unless we are spiritually retarded, for Christians this question is more than trivia, but deals with the topic of our eternal peace and happiness. Jesus is pleased with Peter’s response – “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God”. The Lord Jesus responses – “Blessed are you Simon…for no mere man has revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.” If in good times and bad you genuinely raise your mind and heart to God in prayer - listening as well as sharing; if you study the Bible and live your faith – then you won’t be spiritually retarded. You too, will be able to please the Lord Jesus with your response to His question – “Who do you say that I am?” Next Sunday is the Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. The readings at Mass will be taken from Jeremiah 20:7-9, Romans 12:1-2, and Matthew 16:21-27. Thanks to all who organized, worked or played BINGO – this Satur-day evening. We will let you know how much we raised for the Forward With Christ Building Campaign once we receive the final count. RCIA will begin on Wednesday evening, September 6th at 6:45 p.m. There will be a meeting for the RCIA Team this Wednesday, August 30th at 6:45 p.m. There will be a meeting for the October 7th Auction this Thursday, August 31st at 6:30 p.m. Please mark your calendar and plan to join us for the Auction on Octo-ber 7th. See this bulletin for further information. First Friday Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will resume this Friday, September 1st following the 9 a.m. Mass with repo-sition at 5 p.m. We always need volunteers to spend time with Jesus in prayer. The Lord cannot be left alone on the altar. If you are able and willing, please fill out a form on the table near the baptistery at the en-trance to the church or call Amanda Freeze at 704-500-7539. There will be Bibles and booklets available to you for your time with the Lord. New this year are the following Catholic Answers booklets (to be re-turned at the end of your visit): Abortion, Angels & Demons, Appari-tions & Revelations, Atheism, Death & Judgment, Divorce & Remar-riage, End of the Life Issues, Faith & Science, God, Mary, Miracles, Salvation, Scripture & Tradition, The Bible, The Church, The Eucharist, The Papacy, The Real Jesus, The Sacraments, Witchcraft & The Occult. The New Traffic Pattern – for the safety of all, especially on Sundays, please cooperate and follow the new parking signs when leaving the parking lots. Once Faith Formation Classes start, the flow of traffic is complicated with children being dropped off and picked up for classes in English and then in Spanish. Trees will be planted in the new parking lot during the 2nd week of October. The Annual Eucharistic Congress will be held at the Convention Center in Charlotte in two weeks – Friday & Saturday, September 8th & 9th. This year’s theme is “My Soul Proclaims the Greatness of the Lord.” For more information go on line to www.GOEUCHARIST.COM.

This is a great way for Confirmation students to get service hours. Please text or email Mary Brown if you have any ideas or questions. Wednesday night Faith Formation classes are in desperate need of teachers. Please contact Mary Brown if you can volunteer in the important ministry. Wednesday night classes may need to be canceled if we do not get enough volunteers.
