From the Desk of Father Jonathan

One of the great joys I have as a priest is visit-ing parishioners in the hospital. I don't know if it was the cold weather or just coincidence, but this week we had many hospitalized parishion-ers. On one occasion, I visited three parish-ioners on the same floor in the same hospi-tal. We had a little family reunion of sort. As difficult as a hospital stay is for the patient, I always find the pastoral visit to be joyful. The Lord brings us hope! The Lord brings us light! The Lord heals us, especially our soul! During one of the hospital visits this week, a parishioner told me, "After being in here for so many days, Fr. Jonathan, things get put into perspective. Not one of us in this hospital is taking any money with him or her when we die!" He said it in a very serious and deeply spiritual way. It took me by surprise. But it is so true. When we are healthy, it is easy to live for things that are here today but that won't help us in the life to come. We are so easily tempted to live as if we will be here forev-er. Sickness and age are brutal, but healthy reminders, that what matters most in life is not money or comfort, but rather FAITH, HOPE, and LOVE! Are we investing wisely in our eternity by living with integrity today? Are we investing in build-ing up our faith, hope, and love? I thank you all for daily teaching me by exam-ple how to live with your eyes fixed on heaven, while keeping your feet firmly planted on earth. God bless, Father Jonathan

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord (Jeremiah 1:4-5, 17-19). Psalm — I will sing of your salvation (Psalm 71). Second Reading — If I have all faith so as to move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing (1 Corinthians 12:31 — 13:13 [13:4-13]). Gospel — No prophet is accepted in the prophet’s hometown (Luke 4:21-30). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

The song of the angels, “Holy, Holy, Holy,” resounds from our lips at every Mass. There was a widespread be-lief in the first religions of the world that God stirred cre-ation into being by a word, a song, a musical note. Music and a sense of God’s presence have always been insepa-rable. In the liturgy, your voice is invited into this song as the priest names the reasons for our praise. “Heaven and earth are full of your glory,” and we are not passive on-lookers, but participants in this glory. Catholic prayer no longer assigns this angelic hymn to a choir, but gives it to you to sing. Even if your voice is thought to be suitable only for a well‑insulated shower stall, you are called into this song. We are born to sing—just listen to a baby testing the full range of newly‑discovered vocal abilities. Soon we get shushed and hushed into quiet, and given lots of mes-sages that our voices are unwanted, and that we need to raise our hands in order to be heard. All of that is over-turned in liturgy, the place where God waits to hear us come alive in the song of all creation. In heaven, every-one’s in the choir; why not start practicing now?

© familiacristiana.it

Amen.
