Ijustwanttosay“ThankYou”toeveryonewhohelpedmakeourHolyWeekandEasterservicessomovingagainthis
year.Thechoirdidafantasticjob,leadingusinsingingsomeofourfavoritehymns,whilealsoinspiringuswithanumberofpowerfullymovinganthems.I’mgratefulforallRon’sworkatlearningquicklytheroutineandpullingthingstogethersobeautifully.WewereblessedwithourbrassandtimpaniplayersatEaster,andourcellistandChipBeckonthecarillonforPalmSunday.JoeFerence’sPalmSundayflowerswerewonderfulagainthisyear,andRhondaKoborieandMarilynGoziktransformedthechurchtohelpusexperiencethebeautyandgloryofEaster.DianaMorelandwasinstrumentalinpreparingPrayersinMotion,andJuanandMichaelhadourfacilitieslookingtheirbest.ThankstoMarilynGozikforstrippingthepalms,AnnSutleyformakingourpalmcrosses,HeatherUlanfortheEasterEgghunt,andMadgeTamberfororganizingtheEasterVigilreceptionandourreadersandacolytes.DeaconRandyprovidedaninspiringMaundyThursdaymessage,andhelpedinnumerousotherways.TheAltarGuildworkedtirelesslytoensureeverythingwaspreparedforallourservices,andourushershelpedeverythingoperatesmoothly.Thanks,too,toallourreaders,Eucharisticministers,acolytes,greeters,munchiesproviders,andeveryoneelsewhocontributedto
The Story of Taize and service time of 7:00pm Saturday, May 17th
TaizébeganinasmallFrenchvillageduringWorldWarII,whenaSwisstheologian,BrotherRoger,establishedacommunitydedicatedtopeace,prayerandreconciliationintheworld.Hisconstantquestionwas“Whoisthemostneedyamongstus?”ThisledhimtoriskhislifeleadingJews,Gypsies,andotherstosafetyduringtheyearsofNazioccupation.
Afterthewar,itledhimtomeetweeklywithagroupofGermanprisoners,whomhefedandministeredto.Hefoundthatthemosteffectivewaytopraytogether,giventheirtheologicaldifferencesandthelanguagebarrier,wastosimplysitinsilencetogetherandsharesongsofsimpletuneswithLatinwords.Heisquotedasoftensaying“Words can so often divide us, but in the simplicity of song and silence we find that we can meet in trust at the heart”.
Thebrotherhoodheestablishedwasecumenical;thatis,alldenominationsofChristianswereincluded.BrotherRogerwasProtestant,butCatholicandOrthodoxbrotherswerewelcomedtoseekalifetogetherofsimplicityandservice.ThefraternitybroughtaidtothepoorinruralandurbanareasthroughoutEuropeaswellasholdingworshipservicesbuiltontheirearliermodelwithGermanprisoners.
Withinafewyears,thousandsofpilgrimsfromeverycontinentwereflockingtoTaizétoexperiencethebeautyofthissungworship.Themusicemphasizessimplephrases(usuallylinesfromPsalmsorotherpiecesofScripture)repeateduntiltheyworktheirwayintotherhythmsoftheheart,aformof“prayingwithoutceasing”.
ATaizéservicewillbeofferedatSt.John’sinthesamespirit-togiveseekersofspiritualityacomfortableplacetoworshipnomatterwhattheircreed,tobringavarietyofpeopletogetherinlovingcontemplation,andtoenrichthelivesofthosewhoattendthroughbeauty.
