One of the early Christian mystics was once asked which virtue is the most difficult virtue to acquire. After thinking about it for a while, he said that prayer is the hardest of all the virtues, because prayer is warfare to the last breath; in prayer we see ourselves as we really are. We can never expect the deep wounds of our hearts to be healed without first seeing what those wounds are, and we can never expect the world to look more like God's kingdom, if we don't face the reality of that world. We don't resist making the time to pray because we are lazy or indifferent. We resist prayer, because we know its power. As we prepare for the season of Advent, when we wait for the coming of Jesus, I invite you to join me in recommitting to a daily discipline of prayer. Before Jesus comes as Emmanuel - ‘God with us’, take some time to rediscover where you need God to be with you. A daily discipline of prayer is not easy, but Jesus never said transformation would be. Keep it simple. Keep a daily prayer journal. Join the Fairmount Prayer Chain Ministry. Make time in the morning

to read a chapter from the gospels and then pray for yourself, your loved ones, and the world. Buy a book of daily prayers and take a few minutes each day to pray in silence. Or if all else fails, pray the words that Jesus taught us were enough. There is no 'right way to pray', but a discipline prayer is the gateway to changing ourselves and the world, because prayer opens our eyes to what is real and our hearts to what is possible with a God who is with us in all things. Members of Friends of Fairmount are encouraged to bring their 2014 Commitment Cards to worship on Sunday, November 11th, when all are invited to place their 2014 Commitment Card as an act of worship. Advent by Candlelight (and pajamas!), Tuesday, December 3rd

Worship Geared Toward the Young at Heart

At 7:00 p.m. a short worship service in the chapel especially designed for families with preschool and elementary aged children, but all ages are welcome! Children can come to church in their pajamas to hear a special Advent story and close with a circle of candle light. Hot chocolate and cookies await at the close of the service.

Congregational Christmas Celebration, Sunday, December 8th

Children’s Christmas Musical/White Gift Service and Potluck Dinner

4:00 p.m.— 6:00 p.m. This year's Christmas musical, The World Sings Noel, will be performed as part of a sparkling congregational event on Sunday, December 8th, at 4:00p.m. The celebration concludes with the congregation presenting blessed Christmas mission gifts to the Heights Food Bank families, a carol sing-a-long and a church wide potluck holiday dinner.

Thanksgiving Eve Ecumenical Service

Bethlehem Lutheran, Church of the Redeemer United Methodist, Grace Lutheran, Hope Lutheran, and Noble Road Presbyterian Churches invite you and your community to an Ecumenical Thanksgiving Eve Service on Wednesday, November 27th at 7:30 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, 13001 Cedar Road, Cleveland Heights, 44118. Clergy and combined choirs from these churches will participate. Combined choirs will rehearse at 6:30 p.m. (Hand Bell Choir) and 7:00 p.m. (Chancel Choir). All are invited!

November is North Church Month!

North Church is one of our urban PCUSA congregations in our Presbytery. They are located at their new location in the

Lutheran Metropolitan Ministries building at 4515 Superior Ave.

It’s not too late to be a part of this wonderful opportunity to worship and serve with our brothers and sisters at North

Church. You can volunteer by bringing a dessert to be served on Sundays after worship or help to prepare and serve meals on the

Sundays in November or on Thursday, November 21st.

The sign up sheet is in Andersen Hall or you can call and talk with Pastor Eric Dillenbeck.

Fairmount Welcomes Peter and Nicole Bush

Fairmount Presbyterian Church welcomes new members Peter and Nicole Bush. Peter has sung with the Fairmount Church Choir for 8 years and joins Fairmount by certificate of

transfer from Western Presbyterian Church in Palmyra, NY. Peter is a voice teacher at Cleveland State University. Nicole joins Fairmount through reaffirmation of faith, and is an Attorney at law, Stege & Michelson Co. L.P.A. Nicole, who has a master of music degree in voice from CIM, recently became a soprano leader at Fairmount.

Lost and Found

Are you missing a pair of gloves, a scarf, or maybe a pair of glasses? Over the last year, these items and many more have been turned into our church office. Please stop by Andersen Hall between worship services on Sunday, November 10th, to claim your items. All items not retrieved by November 15th will be donated to charity.

Faith & Technology

You may have noticed new flat screen smart TV’s in both the Ganson Room and Room 207. These televisions, in addition to the purchase of new computers for staff, were paid for through the Louise Westfall Fund that was a result of your generosity. The special fund was designated by Louise to be used for the purchase of technology in support of the ministries of the church. When Pastor Derek called Louise to get her blessing on using the

funds to enhance our technological resources for both the staff and our education programs, she was thrilled! In the coming months additional funds from the Louise Westfall Fund will be used to transform Room 207 into a modern, tech-friendly meeting space. Thank you to all who contributed to the fund in years past. Your generosity is enabling us to more effectively use technology to teach the faith.

In the coming weeks the church will be transitioning to a new website (same domain address) that will make it even easier for members and visitors to access necessary church documents and information. A sample of some of the new online forms that will be accessible via the new website are the Creative Services Request Form, the Fairmount Interest Form, the Building Use Form, and the Wedding Inquiry Form. Thank you for your patience as the staff makes the transition. If you have articles for the next newsletter or creative publications (posters, notecards, etc) that you need produced, please email Office Manager Christine Winters at cwinters@fairmountchurch.org. You may also stop by the church office and fill out a Creative Service Request form.

Hosted by Laura and Scott Desmond, Denice and Ste-ve Benton, Amy and Eric Carlson, and Mark and Marilyn Eisele, the fun starts at 6:00pm and goes until 9:00 p.m. Ba-by and toddler care by nursery attendants Peggy Quarles and Magella Roserie. We'll have pizza for dinner, then games, songs, arts and crafts and a movie! For the adults: No cost to you! Make plans! Youth Ministry

Pancake Breakfast—NOVEMBER 17th after both services of worship!

Do you come to church hungry? Well you should on November 17th because the youth of the congregation invite you to stay after worship and enjoy a delicious meal that will nourish your body and your soul. We know you will enjoy the food and fellowship and hope you will make a donation that will be used to support our the mission work we will undertake when we return to the Dominican Republic in June of 2014.

Fairmounters Event—Pro-Bowl featuring College Games Saturday, November 16th, 7:00 p.m. Mark and Marilyn Eisele’s Residence Fairmounter’s is a monthly adult fellowship group. Join the Eisele’s as we travel back in time and relive college memories by “replaying” some old college favorite games and activities. Learn the skills of some newer college games from more recent college graduates...Corn Hole and LRC. Let the Eisele’s know and we will add your favorites to the mix of activities for the evening. We will be creating a fun and stress-free game day! Come and join your favorite team. Wear your favorite college gear and colors. Please bring your own beverages. Adult Christian Education Classes, Sunday Mornings through December Living the Questions 2.0 brings together over thirty highly acclaimed scholars, theologians and other ex-perts in a video exploration of an open, inclusive, broad-minded Christianity. It is an open-minded alterna-tive to studies that attempt to give participants all the answers and instead strives to create an environment where participants can interact with one another in exploring what's next for Christianity. LtQ2 consists of 21 sessions of three independent flights of seven units each: "Invitation to Journey," "Reclaiming the World" and "Call to Covenant." Each unit has a separate theme with a 20 minute video session which can be viewed and discussed independently. Invitation to Journey and the first 5 sessions of Reclaiming the World were used in adult education in 2011/2012. Because the previous sessions were so inspiring and thought-provoking the remaining sessions are scheduled for this Fall. founded by the late Lois Bing in 1978

with the concept that when an Elder’s

term on the Session expires, the Elder becomes an Elder Association member

with the objective of utilizing their past Session experiences, talents and

expertise to help support and enrich the church’s various programs and spiritual

goals in the ensuing years ahead. Currently the Elder Association has 115

members.

Stefan Willich conducts trumpeter Mark Maliniak and the orchestra with a variety of pieces by Johann Strauss (including the Overture to Die Fliedermaus and Blue Danube), Josef Strauss (Ohne Sorgen Polka) and Hummel (Trumpet Concerto in E Major).

Dueling cellos and dueling guitars stake out their territory on stage in this Mediterranean romp for nine players. Includes the Boccherini quintets. Tickets available through Apollo’s Fire box office or website.

Beyond Acceptance You are invited to join Beyond Acceptance on Tuesday, November 19th at 5:30 PM for a discussion of Oddly Normal, a memoir about one family’s process of helping their gay child come to terms with his sexuality.

Do you know someone in the LGBTQ community? Are you looking for a supportive group to talk about your thoughts and feelings, and to find support within your church family? Beyond Acceptance is the group for you! This group focuses on developing support and resolving issues related to understanding and accepting gay or lesbian family members and friends. We meet the third Tuesday of each month at 5:30 pm in the Chilcote North room.

ENVIRO RECYCLING DRIVE!

10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Fairmount Church is sponsoring a two day ENVIRO RECYCLING Drive where you can responsibly dispose of a variety of your outdated electronic equipment while also caring for the earth!

ENVIRO RECYCLING is a GREEN RECYCLER, meaning everything is recycled, nothing goes to a land fill, nothing is burned and nothing is shipped out of the United States to pollute another countries soil, water or air.

Items Accepted for Drop Off:

Computers, cell phones, computer game consoles, home theater systems, stereos, speakers, cables, power supplies, external drives, printers, scanners, radio equipment, digital phone systems and modems. We accept it regardless of working order. We provide certificates of hard drive sanitizing or destruction. Our recycling equipment and procedures meet all NIST, HIPPA, PCI-DSS and GLBA standards for data destruction.

Enviro will also accept all other recyclable metals; iron, steel, aluminum and copper. We will also take batteries, industrial equipment, lawn mowers, bikes, pots and pans and metal patio furniture. If it’s made of metal, has a power cord or runs on batteries Enviro Recycling will recycle it.
