  • Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

At the beginning of every year, at the fi rst meeting aft er new vestry members are elected, we review and sign a vestry covenant. Th is covenant predates my tenure as rector here, and, by the looks of the photocopies, may even predate the use of computer printers in

church offi ces. However, the covenant is a wonderful document that spells out excellent practical examples of how we can live together as a community of Christians.

Some of the items are pretty vestry-specifi c, like “I will faithfully serve my term of offi ce and place the highest priority on attending all Vestry meetings.” But most of the document’s clauses would be helpful for all of us to live into. Some of them include:

I will…be regular in prayer, open my heart to God’s guidance; to a deepened spirit of forgiveness; to personal confession; to letting go of whatever I need to let go of; to a spirit of praise and thanksgiving; and to a renewed sense of vision for the mission and ministry of St. John’s Church.

I will off er regularly prayers for the parish, for the Rector, Wardens and Vestry Members by name and will encourage others to do likewise.

I will make my fi nancial commitment to St. John’s Church a priority.

I will not criticize any action until I have received reliable information on the varied dimensions of the issues, or reason

  • behind certain decisions, listening to other members with an open heart and mind -- seeking first to understand, than to be understood.

When I have a complaint or criticism, not only will I state my objection, I will also suggest how my concern can be met, or possible solutions or options that would meet or resolve my concern.

As we live into the closing weeks of Lent, I’d commend these disciplines and attitudes to all of us. The more we incorporate these principles into our parish life, the more healthy and joyful an Easter people we will become for ourselves and for the many visitors and newcomers who are joining us.

I pray that your Lent, Holy Week and Easter provide a renewing, joyful encounter with God’s love in his son, Jesus Christ.

    Peace, Adam

News from St. John’s Library Recently the library had some donations. Margaret Ulan

donated twenty two books from the Home to Heather Creek series from Guideposts. The books which have various authors are about a family where three children move to their grandparent’s farm after their mother dies tragically in an accident. Rich Billioni also donated two books. “The Pocket Guide to The Bible” by Jason Boyett and “The Hidden Jesus” by Donald Spoto. The first is a laymen’s interpretation of The Bible and the second is a biographical look at the life of Jesus.

St. John’s library would like to thank both for their donations. I would like to invite all parishioners to check out the books in our collection. If anyone has any questions or suggestions for the library, please contact me at 724-347-1197.

    Vestry Announcement

The vestry would like to remind everyone that vestry meetings are open meetings. Anyone is invited to attend. Meetings are usually held the second Monday of the month from 7:00-9:00. We will begin in the chapel and then move to the upstairs dining room.

If you have any questions, contact Father Adam (724-347-4501) or Beck Yoho, our senior warden (724-347-2644).

Vestry Notes At the February meeting the vestry:

    • Concluded a self-assessment of our work using our guiding principles and decided to change some of the meeting structure to include more prayer and sharing, as well as to reach out to the congregation more

    • Reviewed the vestry covenant

    • Recommended Randy Beck for ordination to the deaconate in the next few months

    • Approved a summer carillon recital series for four weeks in July and August

    • Discussed next steps in taking advantage of underutilized space in the basement and second floor to meet increasing current needs

    • Father Adam reported on increased attendance so far this year, upcoming events for Lent, Easter and First Communion, and the goals he put forth in his annual report sermon.

Hospitality in Churches Workshop with Carly Rowe

    Good Friday Offering

Since 1922, Episcopalians have supported the ministries of the Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East through the Good Friday Offering. Through the work of the Episcopal dioceses in the Middle East, Christians maintain a peacemaking and stabilizing presence in the region, serving their neighbors regardless of faith background. The Good Friday Offering provides essential funding to strengthen the visibility and the vitality of the Christian presence through the schools, hospitals, clinics, and churches which bear witness each day to the reconciling love of God in Christ for all people, whether Christian, Muslim, or Jew.

Any designated offerings marked “Good Friday Offering” plus any loose offering in the plate will go toward the Middle East Good Friday Offering.
