AnimalLawandSociety(Online)defendedtheirthesesintheAulaMagnaoftheFacultyofLaw

oftheUniversitatAutònomaofBarcelona.

Created and directedby Professor TeresaGiménez‐Candela, theMaster inAnimal Law and

Societyoffersacross‐curricularplanofstudiescoveringawiderangeoftopicsrelatedtolaw,

scienceandethics.Deliveredbothonsiteandonline,thisprogrammeistailoredforgraduates

andprofessionalswhoaimtoworkindifferentfieldsrelatedtoanimals.Onceagain,thetheses

presentedinthissessionconfirmedtheneedforaninterdisciplinarystudytodealwithmostof

theissuesinvolvinganimalsinanevolvingworld.

VictorIserndefendedhisthesisentitled“Actualmente,siguenconsiderandoalosanimalesno

humanos comomeros objetos desechables?”. Animals are still used formilitary and police

operations,inparticularhorsesanddogs.Theseanimalsspendtheirlifeinperformingdifficult

anddangeroustasks.Mostlegalsystemsconsiderthemasthings.Mr.Iserninvestigatedthefate

theseanimalsfromahistoricalandcurrentperspectivebycomparingdifferentcountries.The

researchhighlightsthattodaytheawarenessfortheirlivesisincreasing.Thisleadstoavoid

euthanasiaforanimalsthatarenolongeruseful.

MartaAlonsodefendedherthesisentitled“LareformadelaprotecciónanimalenlaComunidad

deMadrid”.Thesocietalconcernforanimalsisthebasistostimulatetheadoptionoflegalrules

destinedtoenhancetheirconditionaslivingbeing.TheCommunityofMadridconsideredthis

approachbyapprovingareformonprotectionofanimals.Thisworkanalysesthislegislation

anditspossibleamendments.


MartaAlonsodefendingherthesisbeforeacommitteecomposedofDr.TeresaGiménez‐Candela,Aals.IsabelGarciaRuizandCarlesLorente

RodrigoMelladefendedhisthesisentitled“Evoluciónjurisprudencialdeldelitodemaltratoo

crueldadanimalenChile”.ThisworkinvestigatedthecrueltytoanimalsinChilefocussingon

the legal framework, the doctrine and the decisions of judges. In this regard, Mr. Mella

analysedsixrelevantlawcasesthatshowtheevolutionofthereasoningrelatedtothejudicial

treatmentofthiscrime.

GeorginaCasas defendedher thesis entitled “ El fois gras un alimento controvertido.”Ms.

Casas researched theproductionof fois gras. Since ingrowingducksor geesemake it, the

welfareoftheseanimalsisanissue.Thisworkisboththeoreticalandpractical.Ononehand,

ithighlightsthehistory,thecharacteristicsofthisproductandthelegalrulesatinternational

and national level. On the other hand, it analyses the experience of a local industry that

introducedinnovationsinthefeedingprocesstoprotectthewelfareofanimals,aswellasthe

resultsofasurveyabouttheawarenessofconsumerstowardthisproduct.

IvanMartindefendedhisthesisentitled“AnimalWelfareRegulations.CaseStudyofWhale

WatchingTourism in thePelagos Sanctuary.”Whalewatching should reduce its impact in

termsofsustainabilityandanimalwelfare.Thisworkinvestigatestheregulationsguidelines

pertaining to the Pelagos Sanctuary in the Mediterranean Sea, evaluates them with the


supportoftheopinionsofmarinebiologistsandotherprofessionals,andsuggestsactionsto

improvethecurrentrulesparticularlyfocussingonthescientificwatchingofcetaceans.

Laure Gisie defended her thesis entitled “El trato a los galgos. Estudio comparado entre

FranciayEspaña.”Thegreyhoundsoftensufferanatrociousfate.Consideredbothpetsand

things,theyareutilisedforcompetitionsandhuntingforashortperiodoftime.Then,itcould

happen that the owners abandon or kill them. This study compares the condition of

greyhounds inFranceandSpain,andproposes some ideas to improve the legal rules that

shouldprotectthem.


Ms.LaureGisiedefendingherthesisbeforeacommitteecomposedofDr.GustavoFedericodeBaggis,Mag.JuliaHavensteinandMag.CarlesLorente

AndreaPeñarandadefendedherthesisentitled“Losanimalescomosujetodederechoenel

ordenamientojurídicocolombiano.”Thisworkinvestigatesthepossibilitytoconsideranimals

assubjectsoflawinthelightofthephilosophyoflawandtheColombianlegalsystem.The

evolutionoflegalsubjectivism,aswellastheConstitution,canallowtheextensionofsome

rightstoanimals,withouthavingtoassimilatethemtohumans.

SandraBerraldefendedherthesisentitled“Aspectosatenerencuentaenlaimplantaciónde

un programa de Terapia Asistida por Animales en pediatría en un Hospital.” This study

investigates the standards that have to be considered in a pet therapy program, their

assessmentandthebenefitsforsickchildren.Italsoindicatestheconcreteimplementationof

thisprograminahospital.

Karine Boveroux defended her thesis entitled “Sacrificio ritual y compatibilidad con el

bienestaranimal:estudiode lashejitáyde ladhabihaenFrancia.”Thisworkanalysesthe

religiousslaughter inFranceand its consequences in termsofanimalwelfareanddignity,

whichcouldbereducedcomparedtoconventionalmethods.

implantación de cámaras.” This work analyses the protection of animals during the

intwoMemberStates:SpainandFrance.

legal rights as they are sentient beings. In this regard, it analyses academic positions,


philosophicreflectionandactionsofanimalrightsgroupswithparticularfocusoncompassion.

Itarguesthereisaconnectionbetweenthetreatmentofanimalsinslaughterhousesandsome

socialevils.

AnaMa.Casadiegodefendingherthesis

Iris van Maarschalkerwaart defended her thesis entitled “Social progress and animal

protection”.Thisstudyinvestigatestheconnectionbetweeneconomicgrowth,socialprogress

andanimalwelfareprotection.Tocarryoutthisresearch,Ms.vanMaarschalkerwaartanalysed

different indicators related to eleven European countries. The results show that the

improvementofanimalwelfarecanalsovarydependingontheconsiderationforfarmingor

companionanimals.

ChrystelleMarledefendedherthesisentitled“BringingAnimalInterestsintoPoliticalAgenda”.

This work analyses the moral rights of animals also in light of the evolution of cognitive

ethology.Itshowsthatthepublicpoliticsplayarelevantroleinpromotingtherecognitionof

legalrightsforanimalsparticularlyattheconstitutionallevel.

InêsdeSousaRealdefendedherthesisentitled“PerformanceswithanimalsinPortugueselaw

–whenanimalwelfareandculturalrightscollide.”Thisworkinvestigatestheclashbetween

animalwellbeingandculturalheritageinPortugal.Inthisregard,Ms.DeSousaRealanalyses

theEuropeanandnationallegalframework,carriesoutacomparisonwithotherjurisdictions,

recallsscientificoutcomesandfocusesonthreecasesofentertainments:bullfight,circusand

pigeonshooting.
