    This masterpiece of portraiture was painted in 1650 when Velázquez was sent to Italy by his patron, Philip IV, to buy paintings for one of the Spanish monarch’s many palaces. While in Rome he was commissioned to paint the pope; the definitive version of the portrait is housed in the Galleria Doria and this remarkable early sketch shows the careful observation and realism that the painter became known for.

  • This portrait shows the sitter turned sideways, a pose Hals refined in the 1620s. Hals paints the young man with an engaging expression seen in many of his works, including his most famous, The Laughing Cavalier.

    The grapes of this rich still life are echoed throughout the room, acting as a decorativeleitmotif on the fireplace, the painted ceiling, cornice and alcoves.

    This imposing pair of Van Dyck portraits are ideal for this room, looking over dining guests imperiously in their luxurious robes.

    In his day, Carlo Maratta was regarded as one of the most influential artists in Europe and he was one of Sir Robert Walpole’s favourite painters. Here we see some of his most important works, such as his portrait of Pope Clement IX, complemented by those of his followers including Giuseppe Chiari and Niccolò Berrettoni.

    No artist was more fashionable in Walpole’s day than Murillo, and the great Immaculate Conception is a ravishing picture in the artist’s characteristic style.

    Salvator Rosa was another artist who was at the height of his popularity in the 18th century and this depiction of the famous parable was one of his finest works, particularly treasured by Walpole.

    This splendid work by Bordone depicts Venus, Roman goddess of love, hand in hand with Flora, goddess of flowers and fertility, while Mars, god of war, and Cupid, god of desire, look on. The artist studied under Titian, and the great Venetian master’s influence can be seen in the figure of Flora, on the left, whose pose and expression are similar to Titian’s own treatment of the subject.

    Vulcan, the Roman god of fire, was a popular subject among 17th century painters and this powerful picture has been thought to show the influence of Velázquez who had painted Vulcan’s forge 30 years before.
