Editor’s Letter

Hello and welcome to the October edition of Christchurch Eye. You may be a new reader and have just come across our little mag due to our increased

distribution lately – so a very warm welcome to you and we hope you enjoy reading our magazine.

As it’s Halloween this month we’ve included a Halloween cupcake recipe for you to try with your little ones (perhaps you could hand them out to Trick or Treaters!); plus an interesting article of how Halloween originated. Have fun scraping and shaping those pumpkins this month; I have to say I hate that job, the smell makes me feel quite unwell! Perhaps you can take some inspiration from below but I’m not quite sure my creative talents reach that far!

Well happy reading for now and I look forward to talking to you next month with a Christmassy feel on it’s way (I so Loooove this time of year!) as our Christmas Festival will be held at the end of November again this year (dates and times will be in the next issue).

Happy Halloween!

A group of teenagers from Bournemouth are using music and social networking to communicate its desires for the future, and it’s not about rioting and violence.

Using a song written by local schoolgirl Rosina Crew, 15, the group wanted to draw attention to some of the issues faced by their generation, focusing in particular on university fees, but in a peaceful way. “Write myself a song” was recorded using only voices and no instruments, and now a video of the song is spreading rapidly through Facebook and YouTube (Rosina Crew).

Rosina Crew, schoolgirl and songwriter, comments: “Our generation feels very aware of the challenges we are facing now and will face over the next few years. University fees is a real issue at the moment. We don’t believe violence and aggression are the way to tackle them. Social networking has been used badly, but we want to show how we can use it to spread a positive message.

I originally starting writing the song around the

time of the student protests about university fees. We want to use music to tackle issues we are facing but at the same time we are standing up to violence and saying that is not the way to tackle it. For me, music is a great way of being creative but also for communicating the issues that I think about and other young people think about too. The message of the song is that we have to take control of our future, but violence is not the answer. We want to say to other young people; let your voice be heard, but in a peaceful way.”

We are an association with two main aims. The first is to enhance the membership of the National Trust by providing talks, outings and social events for members. We make a small profit on each activity and through this accumulated profit we meet our second aim of supporting the National Trust. As we have close links with local properties with get to see parts that the general public does not. An event in September was a private visit to Kingston Lacy with lunch and afternoon tea included.

Coming up on November 10th at 2.30 pm is a talk to be held at the Priory Hall. This annual event held jointly with Christchurch Branch of the Dorset Wildlife Trust is always good and well attended. Clive Chatters of the Hampshire Wildlife Trust will be giving

an illustrated presentation on Flowers of the New Forest: People and Plants of the National Park. Both organisations will have exciting sales tables with plenty of Christmas goodies to buy.

For more about the association either call Shirley Burke on 01425 628992 or visit our website www.cnfnta.org.uk

Now I’m back at college and entering my

final year of A Levels, I have to start to consider where I’m heading next September. Ever since I was about 15, the word ‘university’ was drilled into my head. Getting the right grades from the very start was important if we ever wanted to go. Initially,

it just seemed like the next step was to go on to University, but is it really the right thing to do?

I can’t tell you where I’m going to be a year today, but what I can tell you is this. I want to study Journalism, magazine writing to be specific. This probably doesn’t come as a surprise! I have a few choices, but Uni always seemed like the right way to go. With the Government increasing the fees to over £9,000 a year, I just can’t justify the thought of having nearly a £30,000 debt when I leave.

I know I’m not the only one in the same boat, hundreds of people my age definitely won’t even bother going to university next year. When we think about it in the long run though, does this mean less qualified people?

Personally, I’m starting to consider either an apprenticeship or internship with a magazine. I want to gain some experience, some knowledge and something that I can carry with me through my own career. The Government should be encouraging these types of courses, rather than going to Uni, gaining a qualification and never getting a job in that field.

It’s becoming increasing hard to get a job, and I’m starting to think that an employer would most likely prefer someone with the experience than a degree. This doesn’t apply to all cases, but University is starting to become a back-up plan rather than my number one priority.

At the time of going to press the decision on the Travelodge

application had yet to be made, however it was recommended for approval by officers.

The biggest argument for the Travelodge is that it will bring visitors into the heart of the town and increase footfall, especially as there will not be a restaurant, bar or cafe on the premises. Filling empty premises is important to any town or shopping area. Companies and individuals who make the decision to invest their time and money in taking on such units need to see that as much as possible is being done to draw people in, so that they in turn can attract customers.

Christchurch and Highcliffe centres each have banks, a post office and a library to which people regularly visit, so to encourage them to stay a little longer we need these streets to be lively and attractive and footfall is the key to success.

I have mentioned in previous columns that events attract people and Christchurch has several over the year. One of the big events is the Christmas Festival and the organising committee of this year’s event have been trying to encourage people to get involved. I know it’s been hard work for the volunteers but the all-day market, followed by Santa and the lights switch on, will take place on Saturday 26th November.

The Council does its bit by having free parking on the day and the event is spearheaded by the tourism department. The Chamber of Trade encourages participation in the event by running a shop window dressing competition with great prizes.

Attracting people by a variety of means into the shopping areas, especially those who may have never been before, and providing an engaging experience, will have them talking about the town and hopefully returning. This is footfall and the more we can get the better it will be.

Pre-heat oven 300f 170c gas mark 3

Method

• Put the flour, sugar, butter and baking powder in a bowl and mix with an electric beater on a low speed.

• Whisk the egg and milk together and gradually add to the dry ingredients mixing with the beater on a slow speed.

• The mixture will be quite battery and loose. Spoon into the muffin cases so they are about ¾ full and bake on the middle shelf of the oven for 20-25 minutes.

• When the muffins are springy to touch remove from the oven and cool completely. If the cakes have risen above the level of the cake case just cut the top off to give a flat surface for decorating.

• Sieve the icing sugar into a bowl and add the butter and mix together thoroughly, take two tablespoons of the butter icing and put in a separate bowl, to this you need to sieve in the cocoa powder and mix well together add ¼ teaspoon of milk to the chocolate mix to give it a good consistency to pipe.

• Place the marshmallows on the end of cocktail sticks and coat with the melted chocolate stand in eggcups to dry.

• Smooth the butter icing onto the cake giving an even coverage all over.

• Put the chocolate icing into a greaseproof piping bag and pipe circles from inside out starting small in the centre and getting larger to the outside of the cake, then take a cocktail stick and drag it through the chocolate lines about 6 times from the centre out.

• Take the liquorice blackberries and attach one to each marshmallow with a little butter icing to form the spiders head.

• To make the spiders eyes pipe a blob of chocolate icing on each white chocolate button and stick them to each head with butter icing.

• Finally, place the spiders body on each of the cakes, unravel the liquorice wheels and cut into 1 ½ inch strips for the spiders legs, place 6 strips on each cake tucking the ends just under the spiders marshmallow body.

The de Redvers Family

Throughout 2011 these Christchurch Eye Local History articles are featuring a few of the historic

landmarks that can be seen on a stroll along Convent Walk, which celebrated its centenary in June.

Much of what can be seen from Convent Walk would probably not exist without the influence of the de Redvers family. As Lords of the Manor for much of the 12th and 13th centuries the family oversaw the growth of Christchurch from a village smaller and less valuable than neighbouring Holdenhurst into a thriving market town with two annual fairs and a renowned Augustinian priory.

Originally from Reviers in Normandy, the de Redvers were one of the many noble families that acquired land in England in the wake of the Norman Conquest. However, the Domesday Book records that in 1086 Richard de Redvers possessed only the Dorset manor of Mosterton, but his fortune would be greatly improved as a result of supporting William the Conqueror’s youngest son, Prince Henry, in his squabbles with his two older brothers, Robert and William. Prince Henry eventually seized the crown in 1100 after his brother, now King William II, was killed in a hunting ‘accident’ in the New Forest. As King Henry I he immediately admitted Richard de Redvers to his inner council and granted him lordship of numerous manors including the Manor of Christchurch.

Over the next two hundred years the family established the castle as its local stronghold and occasional residence, permitted Augustinian canons to create a priory, fed the poor, and granted generous donations to the town’s burgesses – the forerunners of the Borough Council. In 1257, Richard’s great-great-great-grandson, Baldwin, was invested as the Lord of the Manor by King Henry III. In the same year Baldwin married Margaret de Savoy, a teenage cousin of the Queen. Although Margaret gave birth to a son they named John, the boy sadly died in infancy, leaving Baldwin without a male heir. The King later granted Baldwin two charters permitting him to hold markets and fairs on eleven of his manors. The second of these charters, issued shortly after Christmas 1257, gave permission for a fair to be held in Christchurch on the vigil, feast (6th October) and morrow of the maidenly St Faith. This would become the town’s second annual fair, the other being held eight weeks after Easter

upon the Feast of the Holy Trinity, a local holy day.

During the summer of 1262 the twenty-six year-old Baldwin was in France with King Henry III. The King and many of his entourage fell gravely ill – possibly from malaria. Although the King survived, Baldwin was less fortunate. His body was brought back to England and interred at Breamore Priory. The Manor of Christchurch then passed to Margaret as part of her dower – the medieval equivalent of a widow’s pension. When Margaret died in 1292 the Manor was claimed by Baldwin’s sister and heiress, Isabella, and when she died only a few months later it was returned to the crown. This saw the end of the de Redvers dynasty, but the family’s influence undoubtedly helped shape the Christchurch we know today.

In commemoration of St Faith’s Fair a costumed exhibition of everyday life in medieval Christchurch will be held at Place Mill on Christchurch Quay on Saturday 8th October from 11.00am until 4.00pm.

The Christchurch Local History Society produces a quarterly journal for its members (also available to purchase at Christchurch Information Centre) and organises a series of talks from September to May. These take place at Christchurch Junior School in Clarendon Rd, on the first Tuesday of the month.

REACH THE HEART OF THE LOCAL COMMUNITY WITH

WOULD YOU LOVE MORE BUSINESS?

“Cheryl Dennett is doing a great job in producing ‘Christchurch Eye’. This, to my mind, is the best local magazine we have. It is very well produced, in a neat size; it is aesthetically pleasing with lovely, bright cover photographs of the local area. Cheryl’s commitment to the local community is clear from the energy and enthusiasm she displays in her involvement in the community, and many of our projects”

Lesley Burt, Local resident

“In my experience, advertising can be a very” hit and miss” affair. However, since starting to advertise with Christchurch Eye a few short months ago, I’ve been blessed with an absolutely superb response! I have gained new clients both for my Private Practice AND for my Self-Hypnosis Workshops. Also, every client who has come to me has without fail said how much they enjoy (and look forward to) reading Christchurch Eye and what a superb local community-focussed publication it is. Moreover, Cheryl and her team are a delight to work with. No wonder then that Christchurch Eye is now my NUMBER ONE choice for any local marketing I do.”
