Christchurch Food Festival programme now availableThe programme for the twelfth Christchurch Food and Wine Festival, taking place from 6 to 13 May, has now been published - Highlights of this year’s Festival include free demonstrations from celebrity chefs Nick Nairn, Peter Gordon and Rose Elliot during the International Food Market weekend on 7 and 8 May. Meanwhile the Festival’s patron, Lesley Waters, will be pitting her culinary skills against two local chefs, Alex Aitken from The Jetty and Andrew Gault from The Captain’s Club, in two ‘Cookafun’ sessions.

The popular Kids’ Kitchen will be held again at the Priory School with sessions for Ester’s Little Chefs aged from seven to 10 years as well as Liz’s Pasta Workshops for those aged from 11 to 14.

New this year is the Festival Cookschool taking place at the Priory Suite of the Kings Hotel from Tuesday 10 May to Friday 13 May. Each day will feature a Masterclass for a limited number of people to see cookery demonstrations on a variety of themes. Lesley Waters will be presenting one Masterclass with others featuring chocolate, patisserie, wine tasting and a Food, Fun and Fitness Masterclass with Rose Elliot.

Tickets for Kids’ Kitchen and the Festival Cookschool are available from Christchurch Information Centre and Cookschool tickets are also available from the Kings Hotel.

As usual there is a full programme of events in restaurants, cafes, pubs and tea rooms throughout Christchurch every day of the Festival culminating in the charity dinner – a Night in Monte Carlo – at Christchurch Harbour Hotel on Sunday 15 May.

The programme can now be found at a variety of places throughout the borough and beyond, including Christchurch Information Centre in the High Street, or by calling the Information Centre on 01202 471780. The full programme is also on the website at wwwchristchurchfoodfest.co.uk

footrescue®, the premier chiropody and podiatry

provider in Dorset, recently opened their new flagship

clinic in Christchurch at 23 Bargates. It comes as

welcome news to residents of Christchurch – not only

will footrescue® be bringing their pioneering chiropody

techniques to the area but their exciting expansion

programme will also create new job opportunities for

local residents.

The clinic was officially opened by The Mayor of

Christchurch, Councillor Nicholas Geary on 5th

February 2011 and has initially employed three staff

with an additional further two staff joining during

autumn 2011.

footrescue® is the brainchild of local entrepreneurial

husband and wife team Jim and Kay Leigh who are

internationally respected names within the podiatry

industry. footrescue® has been operating from their

Bournemouth clinic at the East Cliff Therapy Centre for

the past three years. Over this period they have built up

a sizeable customer base with regular clientele coming

from all areas of Dorset. In fact, the footrescue® brand

reputation is so outstanding that some patients come

from as far away as London and Birmingham for the

ground breaking treatments provided.

The footrescue expansion programme is most

impressive with 2 more corporate owned sites planned

for Poole and the surrounding area, with an additional

5 new franchise openings targeted for 2011 and a

further 5 targeted for 2012. “This exciting expansion

programme was built as a response to the additional

demand created by recent cuts in NHS services.”

footrescue® will also be establishing their head office

in the New Forest area over the coming year, with

plans to develop a specialist surgical and rehabilitation

centre within the next 2 years.

Business ColumnA FEAST FOR BUSINESS?

As copies of this edition of Christchurch Eye are distributed around town the Food Festival will be upon us again. This fabulous annual event attracts tens of thousands of people to our town. But do you know how it all began and what economic influence it has on Christchurch business?

Older residents will remember the Pontin’s holiday camp. Because people staying at the camp would shop, eat and buy locally, its closure had a detrimental effect on the town. The Chamber of Trade investigated possible solutions to this loss of business. The millennium was approaching and Chamber member, Mary Reader, suggested a Millennium Food and Wine Festival.

Christchurch Council was approached and the plans formulated to put on the event. It was a resounding success; the rest, they say, is history. Run by volunteers and the council’s tourism and PR staff, the Food Festival is renowned as the best on the South Coast.

So, does it benefit business? Yes, it give visitors a great experience of the town, generates positive news coverage, locally and nationally at a time when people are considering summer breaks and has a significant impact on trade in local shops, bars and restaurants.

The International Market is just part of the Festival but generates massive footfall. Wise businesses take full advantage of this. I was speaking to Rob Martin of Piddle Brewery and The George Inn. They initially offered special meal deals but now run a highly successful beer festival during the market weekend; Rob says it’s the busiest two trading days of their year. Non-food businesses can also benefit by being imaginative; special offers and window dressing helps.

Christchurch Food Festival recently won a Dorset Business Award. The organisers were delighted that the event has been acknowledged as having made a real difference to the economic sustainability of the town.

Enjoy.

Established in 1991, Made 2 Measure (M2M) have since been providing quality fitted bedrooms and kitchens to the Christchurch area from their workshop/showroom based at the Grange Rd Industrial Estate at the top of Mudeford.

Depending primarily on word of mouth advertising, M2M offer a free home design service allowing customers to view samples and

see the design process in the comfort of their own home.

Unusually, for a kitchen and bedroom retailer, M2M also manufacture much

of their own furniture in-house, meaning that the customer can have a true made to measure bedroom or kitchen, choosing exactly what colour and style they want from over 140 combinations. This coupled with our ability to make units to any size and shape means that the customer can have a truly bespoke solution without breaking

the bank. In particular this is ideal for those “loft rooms” with angled ceilings when nothing else seems to fit.

Continued growth and investment in new machinery means that we are currently bursting at the seams, so a logical next step was to re-locate our showroom out of the workshop and establish it as a standalone entity.

To this end we were fortunate in securing a retail premises with high visibility and customer parking that had previously been trading as a kitchen and bedroom business. This has offered us a fantastic showcase to display our latest designs and styles, and so look forward to welcoming our customers both past and new at the our new address of 181 Barrack Rd (next to Lois’ baby store).

When I was told that I had won my regional heat to enter for Chelsea flower show 2011 I

didn’t believe they meant me! My name is Kay, I’m 19 and I’m a local florist in Christchurch, Fairmile Florist. I am very excited about being able to compete for the title of RHS Young Florist of the Year 2011.

To get to this stage I had to enter a regional heat and come first place in a competition. The heat that was most convenient for me was Fraddon, Cornwall and was in November 2010. As I was competing against other people my age that had been at Chelsea previously and won various titles in the Floristry industry my chances were slim, however the design I created came

first place, with a score of 92, and I had secured my place in Chelsea.

The theme for this year’s Chelsea Flower show is ‘A day at the Races’, so of course my design brief for this year’s competition is to design and create Jockey Silks. A challenging brief, but as it’s my first time through to the finals I am determined to create something spectacular and give it my all!

I will be at the Chelsea Flower show from Monday 23rd May to Wednesday 25th of May so be sure to come into the main tent and say hello to your local Florist!

Lateral Th inkingLateral thinking puzzles are a hybrid between a brief story and a puzzle. In each puzzle some

clues to the scenario are given but they don’t tell the full story. In order to solve the puzzle

you need to work out which details are missing. You can solve them alone but it’s more fun with

friends.

Local History By Phil Tate

Convent Walk

June 2011 sees the centenary of Convent Walk, one of Christchurch’s most interesting and beautiful features. To commemorate this anniversary, throughout the year these Christchurch Eye Local History articles are featuring a few of the historic landmarks that can be seen on a stroll along Convent Walk.

A document discovered in the Christchurch Local History Society archives reveals that the idea for a public footpath beside the millstream in Convent Meadows had been proposed in 1907 by Councillor William Eaton Burt, a solicitor living at 51 Bargates (now Raxworthy opticians). The Borough Surveyor’s subsequent report to Mayor Sambrooke Newlyn expressed the view that the scheme ‘would greatly improve that already beautiful portion of your district by extending its beauties further afield’. However, the idea did not become a reality until 1911, when Mayor Robert Druitt and the Mayoress officially opened the footpath as part of the town’s celebrations for the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary on 22nd June. The brief ceremony took place at the Gin Hatch door.

The Gin Hatch was used for controlling the flow of the millstream by allowing excess water to return to the Avon through a short sluice. ‘Gin’ may be a corruption of ‘engine’, a term dating back to Anglo-Norman times, and is perhaps an indication that the hatch was operated by a windlass or similar mechanism.

Although the new Convent Walk was later described by the Christchurch Times as ‘an acquisition to the beauty of the ancient Borough’, its creation was not without its detractors. At a Council meeting held only shortly before the coronation Alderman Lane argued that the cost of laying the gravel could have been better used for improving other parts of the town. He said that the gravel had made a pleasant country walk into a public

roadway, and he had already seen cyclists creating a danger by riding along it. Dr Hartford described the rustic bridge at the Gin Hatch as ‘hideous, vulgar, and quite out of keeping with the surroundings’ and hoped that the person responsible for it was ‘thoroughly ashamed of himself’. However, Mr Tiller, a supporter of the scheme, urged the Council to stop ‘fooling about’ and vote sufficient funds for the Walk to be completed to the credit of the town.

To separate the new footpath from the remainder of Convent Meadow the Council ordered 350 yards of wrought iron unclimbable fence (at 5s-8d per yard) and a wrought iron gate (£3-18s-6d) from Bayliss, Jones & Bayliss Ltd of Wolverhampton. This company, a major manufacturer of ironmongery, also supplied the railings for Bournemouth’s seafront promenade. Most of the fence is still in place and the gate is now the garden entrance to Avon Lodge.

What became of William Eaton Burt? He took part in the Coronation Day procession alongside other former members of the Council. In 1914, aged 58, he immigrated with his family to New Zealand, where he ran a remote three thousand acre farm. William Eaton Burt later moved to the city of Nelson, where he died in 1930. A newspaper obituary said that he had continued to take much interest in municipal and Parliamentary matters, and was ‘held in high esteem by all who knew him’. There is no doubt that he helped shape the Christchurch we know today.

Brogan

Brogan’s ColumnI realise that summer is approaching fast when I hear it’s the time of year for Christchurch Food & Wine Festival again! Held every May, the festival is running for its twelfth year with plenty more excitement, edible cuisine and enjoyable stands for everyone.

The Festival was originally held to celebrate the Millennium in 2000, and with its huge successes it then became a yearly event for Christchurch. Although the town already has several high-class restaurants, cafes and tearooms serving excellent food, the Festival is a chance to expand this, help local schools and education and to join the community together.

It is now seen as ‘One of the Best Food Festivals in the UK’, attracting top celebrity chefs such as Anton Edelman, James Martin, Gary Rhodes, Jean-Christophe Novelli and Nick Nairn, to name just a few. Furthermore, Lesley Waters has been Patron of the Food & Wine Festival for a number of years. She dedicates a lot of time visiting local schools judging the Junior Chef of the Year semi-finals as well as the final held on the first Friday of the Festival in the marquee in Saxon Square.

More importantly, this whole event has attracted tourism and boosted local businesses. As a child, I’ve always loved watching the high street being filled with people, the cookery demonstrations and over 100 stalls. From olives to oils and asparagus to anchovies, you’ll find everything food and wine related and an opportunity to try something new. Not forgetting the beautiful smells of strong cheeses and foreign spices, enough to make your mouth water!

It makes me feel proud to live in a community so eager to hold such a fantastic event, especially with the amount of volunteers who help make it happen. Plan your visit now to the Festival between Friday 6th – 13th May 2011.

See you there.
