4 • Children’s Summer Program Guide 2020

Due to extreme difficulty in invoicing the Government of Alberta for their portion of children’s camp fees in 2019, and new challenges being presented to the process, we have decided to no longer direct bill the Government of Alberta for the extraordinary costs of Between Friends programming.

What does this mean for me? Families will be required to pay their Camp Bonaventure and/or Camp Fun’zAmust fees in FULL prior to individual sessions starting. We will no longer be accepting only the “parent portion payment” as in previous years. After you have paid your fees in full, we will provide you with your Statement of Account, so that you can follow up with FSCD for reimbursement.

What if I get full funding and have not had to pay in the past?

We will not be direct billing FSCD for any child’s fees in 2020. Families who receive full funding from FSCD will be required to pay Between Friends in full and seek reimbursement on their own.

When do my fees need to be paid?

All fees are required to be paid, or pending payment through a payment plan, before the child’s first day of camp. If fees are not paid or payment plans are not in place prior to camp starting, we will not be able to accept your child at camp.

What if I cannot afford the full fees?

We understand how financially demanding these fees may be for individual families. We are committed to ensuring each child has an opportunity to attend Camp Bonaventure or Camp Fun’zAmust. Between Friends is extremely proud to subsidize all spaces at Camp Bonaventure and Camp Fun’zAmust. Through our fundraising efforts, we are able to reduce the advertised cost to families by 21%.

In addition, some families may benefit from a payment plan and/or Fee Assistance. If you require a payment plan and/or Fee Assistance, you can register your child with a $50 deposit per session. Fee Assistance forms must be completed and returned to your Community Engagement Coordinator (CEC) within 5 business days of registering. Families who pay the $50 deposit, but do not complete the fee assistance forms or do not make the required payments prior to camp will have their child turned away on the first day of the child’s camp.

When can I start my payment plan?

We are trying our best to support families through these changes, and are open to families putting credits on their accounts before registration night. Please note that this DOES NOT guarantee you a spot in a session. Registration will still be required, regardless of the amount of credits on the account. If you put credits on your account and are unsuccessful in securing a space in the program you are looking for, we will happily refund your payments or apply them to any other Between Friends program.

What if I have more questions?

All of our Community Engagement Coordinators (CEC’s), as well as our Manager, Membership Services are available to answer any further questions you may have, especially questions that are specific to your family’s needs. Please contact your CEC directly, or if you do not know who to contact, please call our main line at 403-269-9133.

6 • Children’s Summer Program Guide 2020

Camp Bonaventure is a fun outdoor summer day camp for children and youth, with and without disabilities.

Campers experience positive social interactions while engaging in healthy lifestyle activities. They also challenge their abilities and learn new skills. This inclusive setting can be adapted to all ability levels. Through Camp Bonaventure, campers build self-esteem and develop a sense of independence and accomplishment. Campers are grouped by age to encourage interaction with their peers and to facilitate age-appropriate programming.

Between Friends considerably subsidizes summer programs through fundraising efforts. Friends in Motion: Bowl-A-Thon is our biggest source of subsidy for Camp Bonaventure, Camp Fun’zAmust, and Adventurers.

Activities

Camp Bonaventure focuses on healthy lifestyle activities that challenge our campers’ abilities in a safe environment. All activities are monitored by our highly trained staff and include a variety of skill development opportunities including physical movement skills, social skills and positive identity building. Campers will get to experience swimming, sailing, arts and crafts, games, overnight camp outs, campfire sing-a-longs, unstructured free play and much more! (Please note Minnows activities repeat every two weeks) Camp Bonaventure even has a horticultural therapy garden and multi-sensory room to meet our campers’ diverse interests and needs.

Support Ratio

Camp Bonaventure can accommodate campers with a 1:2 to 1:6 ratio with most groups organized into a 1:4 counselor to camper ratio. We use information collected on participant profiles to assist us in structuring ratios within our groups and in providing additional volunteer support as required.

If your camper requires a 1:1 support ratio, they are welcome to attend camp with their private support aide. If you are unsure if your camper will require a private support aide, please contact your Community Engagement Coordinator (CEC). If you are unsure who your CEC is please call the main line at 403 269 9133.

T-shirt Design Contest

Your design could be on the new camper t-shirt! Submit a drawing of your favorite part of camp on an 8 ½” x 11” sheet of paper. Ensure that the artist’s name and age, his/her parent/guardian’s name, and a phone number are on a separate piece of paper submitted with your design. Send to our Planning Coordinator before April 28 by mail or email at [email protected].

Every camper will receive a FREE Camp Bonaventure t-shirt!
