“Living Up to Your Commitment” Deuteronomy 26:16-19

Verse 16 sets the foundation for the message: (1) God COMMANDS obedi-ence to His Word (v. 16a), and (2) we are CAREFUL TO OBEY with all our heart (v. 16b). In the next two verses (vv. 17-18) we see TWO DECLARA-TIONS. One by God’s people (v. 17) and one by God Himself (vv. 18-19). Consider these declarations in light of your own commitment to the Lord. I. A DECLARATION BY GOD’S PEOPLE (What God’s people declared to God) v. 17. A. They declared THE LORD TO BE THEIR GOD (v. 17a “You de- clared the Lord to be your God…”). -Have you really evaluated who your God is? (cf. 4:35; 5:7; 6:4). B. They declared THE LORD’S WAY TO BE THEIR WAY (v. 17b “...and that you would walk in His ways…”). -Are the ways of God also the ways of your life? (cf. 8:6; 10:12; Isa. 55:8-9). C. They declared The LORD’S WORD TO BE THEIR MANDATE (v. 17c “...and keep His statutes, His commandments and His ordi- nances, and listen to His voice”). –Is the Word of God your mandate for living? (cf. 4:12, 30; 6:30; 12:28). II. A DECLARATION BY GOD (What God declared to His people) vv. 18-19. A. God declared, YOU ARE THE RICHES OF MY POSSESSION (v. 18a “The Lord has today declared you to be His people, a treas-

ured possession…”) (cf. 4:20). I Peter 2:9 (of “you who believe”) “...you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peo-ple for God’s own possession…”

B. God declared YOU ARE THE RECIPIENTS OF MY PROMISE (v.18b “...as He promised…”) (cf. 6:3). II Peter 1:3-4 “...His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godli-ness...He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, in order that by them you might become partakers of the divine nature…”

Word of Encouragement “The Truth is the Truth”

In his book, Truth Decay, Steve Hale addresses “the truth about truth.” He quotes from Norman Geisler and Frank Turek who list some basic criteria for truth: Truth is transcultural: if something is true, it is true for all people, in all

places, at all times. (2+2=4 for everyone, everywhere at every time.) Truth is unchanging even though our beliefs about truth change.

(When we began to believe the earth was round instead of flat, the truth about the earth didn’t change, only our belief about the earth changed.) Truth is not affected by the attitude of the one professing it. (An arro-

gant person does not make the truth he professes false. A humble person does not make the error he professes true.) All truths are absolute truths. Beliefs can not change the truth, no matter how sincerely something

is believed to be true. (Someone can sincerely believe the world is flat, but that only makes him or her sincerely mistaken.) Truth is discovered, not invented. It exists independent of anyone’s

knowledge of it. (Gravity existed prior to Newton’s discovery of it.) Hale adds, “Truth is not a subjective matter of taste, but an objective matter of fact.” Truth is truth! And the truth about truth is that Jesus is “the way, the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father but though (Him)” John 8:32. He said to God, the Father, about us, “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.” The Bible is the truth revealed and Jesus is the truth personified. Both are absolutely true. Do you know the truth? Do you believe the truth? Do you live the truth? ...the truth is the truth!

Encouragingly yours, Russell Cook

C. God declared, YOU ARE THE REFLECTION OF MY PRECEPTS (v.18c “...that you should keep all His commandments…”) (cf. 4:6; 7:12a, 14a).

D. God declared, YOU ARE RANKED BY MY PREEMINENCE (v. 19a “...that He shall set you high above all nations which He has

made, for praise, fame, and honor...”) (cf. 4:7). Matthew 16:18 (Jesus said) “...upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades shall not overpower it.”

E. God declared, YOU ARE A REPOSITORY FOR MY PERFECTION (v. 19b “...you shall be a consecrated people to the Lord your God”) (cf. 7:6;28:9). I Peter 1:15-16 “...like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.’”

There is no question about God “living up to His declaration to us if, in fact, our declaration to Him is honored. Have you yet declared, (1) THE LORD IS MY GOD, (2) GOD’S WAYS WILL BE MY WAY, and (3) GOD’S WORD WILL BE MY MANDATE FOR LIFE? If not, you may make your declaration today. We need to “be careful to do them with all our heart and with all our soul” (v. 16).

A Nugget From My Spiritual Journey… As I cared for my elderly parents with Alzheimer’s 24/7, there seemed to not be enough hours in the day or energy in my body. I had friends and medical personnel here who helped, but it was still a challenge. My only sister lives 1500 miles away and flew down periodically to help. One day as we talked on the phone long distance about that day’s challenges, she said, “We need to pray about…” Without thinking, I said, “You pray. I’ll go do.” Her quiet response over the phone was, “Why do you suppose God put us both in the same family?” Stunned and a bit embarrassed, I knew in my heart she was doing all she could do from a distance, which happens to be what she does best. She is the consummate prayer warrior but she couldn’t be here often to do the daily tasks. I was praying “on the go,” as I tried to learn how to meet one physical and emotional need after another. She was right. God had put together the perfect family team to meet this nearly overwhelming need long before any of us knew of the need. But He knew. That is how the Body of Christ works, whether in marriages, families or in churches. God places a combination of uniquely gifted members of the Body together. When they function correctly, each person’s giftedness dovetails with the other. There are no Lone Rangers ™. We shouldn’t be jealous of one another, wishing for gifts we don’t have or work ourselves to death trying to cover too many bases. Instead, we should a) discover our spiritual gifts and talents, b) develop them, and c) work carefully, cheerfully and willingly with each other to fit them together in the Body of Christ so that “it” functions well! Our family has had several broken bones or surgeries or illnesses. These times have shown us plainly how each part of the physical body depends upon the other and how each is necessary. The parts have individual func-tions, but none function correctly alone. When marriages, families, or churches are not functioning well, we need to learn to ask why not…and be willing to let God show us His plan…as we work together in the same Body.
