The moment your child utters her first word, you’ll probably want to announce it to the world, while quickly marking the occasion in her baby book. You probably won’t be so thrilled, however, when her word of choice evolves into the very opinionated word “no.” Although this is a frustrating and challenging stage of development, it is completely normal.
Jen Mann-Li, a mother of two, describes her daughter Sadie, 3, as a “pro” at using the word no. “She was a late talker, didn’t really talk until she was almost 2 years old, and no was a favorite right away,” Mann-Li says.
Mann-Li says Sadie refuses to be distracted from what she wants. “She’s very stubborn and will not budge (sometimes literally),” she says.
Why they say it. Laura Murphy is a certified parent coach and president of Real Families, Inc., which helps families work through parenting, marriage and financial issues. The chief child-rearing complaint from parents concerns children refusing to do what the parents want them to do, Murphy says.
Not only is the word “no” an easy word for toddlers to say, but Murphy believes, “The biggest reason they say it so much is because they hear it so much from everyone else.”
The good news is this phase is completely normal and healthy. “The number one job of a 2-year-old is to test every physical limit. Pushing physical limits to find out what the adults will do is a natural approach for a toddler. They need to learn those limits,” Murphy says.
Need a few proactive strategies to reduce the use of the word in your home and forge a path of less resistance?
Change your approach. Challenge yourself to see if you can say no without really saying the word no. For example, if your child asks for a cookie instead of saying “no, not before dinner” say “sure, after dinner.” This exercise will also make you more aware of just how often you say no.
“Once we change our approach, we usually notice a change in our children,” Murphy says. Also, talk to your spouse and childcare providers about using other words besides no all the time. But that doesn’t mean you should ban the word entirely. “Say yes as often as possible, and when you say no, mean it,” Murphy advises.
Having a sense of humor doesn’t hurt either. Ingrid Brown has two daughters, 4 and 2, who both went through the “no” phase at around 20 months. “I tried to make a game out of it,” Brown says. “If they said no to everything, I would counter in a funny voice

repeating ‘nooooOOOooo’ right back at them and give them a little tickle.”
Offer two choices. Resistance often begins long before a child utters his first word. “When they’re old enough to start flinging food at you from their high chair, they’re old enough to start choices,” says Murphy.
Barring a dangerous situation like your child refusing to move in a busy street, provide your child with two choices that you like and can live with. “Small choices for the kids, but the adults make the big decisions,” says Murphy. For example, a parent decides on bedtime, but a child chooses between the blue pajamas or red pajamas.
By giving away small decisions to your toddler, she will have a sense of control over her life, which will likely reduce negative behaviors such as not listening, running away, resistance, and temper tantrums. If a child refuses to make a decision in 10 seconds, the par-ent should make it for her, following up with empathy.
Show empathy not anger. Murphy stresses that empathy is an important com-ponent of providing choices to your child. When you replace anger with empathy, you’ll notice a huge shift. For example, when your child doesn’t get something that she wants, say something along the lines of: “I know. It’s a bummer.”
Avoid “parenting on the fly.” Murphy says parents should stay calm in the heat of the moment and decide ahead of time on what things to definitely say no to and what you can say yes to. Also, try making a list of the small choices you can offer your child during those more troublesome times of the day.
For more parenting tips and resources, check out Murphy’s website Real-families.com, Loveandlogic.com, Kidsareworthit.com and the book Making Children Mind Without Losing Yours by Kevin Leman.
If your tactics don’t seem effective, seek out an expert like a family counselor to assess the situation. Although a tweak in parenting skills may be all that is needed, an expert can help determine if something more serious is going on with your child.

Daycare, and nannies, and au pairs, oh my! There are a myriad of childcare choices
available to families today, but figuring out which option is best is no easy task.
Parents of young children have a particularly difficult job, because care providers for children under 2 years of age are not as prevalent as those for older children. Because babies have more needs than older children, they require a higher level of care. That translates to higher costs for care centers and parents.
Deciding on the right care setting for your little one is a big decision, requiring careful thought, research and planning. Before you decide which option is best for you, consider the following factors.
MoneyParents know that childcare will be expensive, but
few are prepared for the shock of the actual dollar amount – even for those seeking part-time care. Looking at the total cost of childcare per month can be scary. But stay calm. This is an important invest-ment, so re-examine your family finances before making any decisions.
Determine a monthly range that your family can afford. For example, if you figure you can spend around $800 per month, are you prepared to spend $900 if a certain month has an extra week? Will you be able to spring for incidentals such as field trips and fundraisers? Always give yourself a cushion for unexpected tuition changes, occasional nights out (and hiring a baby-sitter), or little odds and ends that arise.
FlexibilityWhile flexibility in the workplace is fairly com-
mon, especially for parents of young children, it isn’t yet an option everywhere. When you decide on a childcare solution you also need to take into account your work schedule.
What will happen if your child gets sick? Are you able to leave work early or arrive late? Also consider schedule conflicts. Daycare centers may close on cer-tain holidays when you have to work. A baby-sitter or nanny may get sick at the last minute and not be able to make it. Create a realistic back-up plan that you, your family and employer can live with so you aren’t scrambling to handle surprises that may pop up.
ExpertiseNo one is going to care for your child in exactly
the same way you do. Even if you have family members or the most agreeable baby-sitter in the world, there are bound to be some differences. And that’s not a bad thing. Kids need to learn to adapt to different people’s personalities and preferences, while also expressing their own. Just make sure your expectations for behavior and meeting basic needs are consistent.
The reality is, expertise with young children is not easy to come by. Laws vary by state regarding teacher-student ratios for children younger than 2, as a result, many daycares don’t accept infants. When you find a person or center that feels right, ask about the experience of individuals who will interact with

your child. What is their educational background? How long have they worked with kids of this age? Are they certified in infant First Aid/CPR? Parents need to weigh how important these things are to them, and determine their deal-breakers.
HealthMost pediatricians will tell you that the average child
gets between four and eight colds per year. This doesn’t seem so bad, but when you realize that most of them will happen between late fall and early spring, and that a “cold” can last up to two weeks, it may start to feel like your child is perpetually sick. As a result, you are constantly stressing, missing work, or scrambling for last minute care.
Chances are your child will have a few unexpected visits to the doctor if he or she is cared for in a setting with other children. While the general consensus is that the first year in a daycare-type setting is the worst for sicknesses, the ailments don’t end after that. If your child is particularly sensitive to seasonal illnesses, you may want to find a temporary one-on-one care solution, or review the sanitation procedures at the daycare.
If you have a nanny, find out upfront if she is comfort-able caring for a sick child. You don’t want to find out on
your way at the door that your baby-sitter doesn’t know how to take a temperature or is nervous about giving medicine.
PhilosophyThis is probably the single most important aspect
when choosing childcare for young children. Because your child will be spending a lot of time with his caregiver, he’ll be learning a lot of behavioral and problem-solving cues. You need to figure out how the caregiver’s philosophy on learning, setting limits, and maintaining schedules, matches up with your own.
This can be sticky regardless of what type of care you have. Make a point to observe your child in the setting for an hour or so before committing. You can also ask them how they handle certain situations like tantrums and conflicts. The conversation may be awkward, but at least you’ll know if you are on the same page.
Finding quality care is possible if parents do their homework. Take a good long look at each of these areas before making a commitment. But don’t stop there. Revisit these topics periodically to make sure your child-care solution is meeting your child’s needs and making sense for your family.

The Breakdown: Pros and Cons of
Popular Childcare Solutions
Childcare center/daycareWhat it looks like: Your child attends a group childcare setting with other children of a similar age. Pros – Childcare centers have strict regulations set forth by most states, so the staff is usually certified in First Aid/CPR and the child-caregiver ratio is low. Many centers also require their caregivers to complete an early childhood certification program, so they are trained in working with young children. Cons – Your child will probably contract more than her fair share of viruses, especially her first year. Because there are several children per adult, your child may have to adjust to a group schedule of feeding and napping that may differ from the one at home.
Nanny or baby-sitterWhat it looks like: Your child receives care from an individual in your home, Pros – Your child has the undivided attention of a care-giver in a safe and familiar place. It also makes maintaining a feeding and napping schedule easy. Cons – Lack of socialization. As your child gets older, you may want him to interact with other babies or tod-dlers, not just adults, to learn about sharing, taking turns, etc.
Family memberWhat it looks like: A grandparent, aunt or uncle, or other family member cares for your child in your home or theirs. Pros – Family members have a personal relationship with your child, so it’s probably the closest thing to having you there. Cons – If your family member doesn’t agree with your way of doing things, they may do what worked for their kids. They may feel more comfortable doing their own thing without consulting you.
Au PairWhat it looks like: Au pairs are typically young female nannies who live in your home and work up to 40 hours per week caring for your children.

Pros – Because most au pairs come to the United States from another country, they introduce new cultural perspectives and ideas to your children. If you go through an organization like Au Pair in America or Interexchange, the candidates are pre-screened. Often the overall cost is less per hour than traditional baby-sitters or nannies. Cons – Having someone enter your home (and your lives) for a year is a big commitment. You need to make sure your family is prepared for this. Most au pairs com-mit up to one year, so you’ll have to repeat the process again next year.
HybridWhat it looks like: A combination of any of the previ-ously listed options. Pros – You can customize care to meet your needs, and possibly save money. Your child gets to experience different settings, and learns to socialize with a variety of people.
Cons – Change can be confusing for children, and if your hybrid schedule isn’t regimented, your child’s routines (eating, sleeping, etc.), may suffer.
Help In Finding Childcare
Stuck on where to find childcare? These are just a few ideas from parents who’ve been there.
■■ Drive around your town and look for signs for preschools or daycares (they’re the type of places you may not notice until you need one)■■ Talk to people at work or even the local library; if you live in a small town, word of mouth is often your best bet■■ Visit coffee shops or bookstores, anywhere with a message board; baby-sitters often place business cards or fliers here■■ Call the local public school. Often principals, teachers or office staff will know of a local care center or parents looking for part-time work■■ Hang up fliers at nearby colleges, and include your contact information. If you can, locate the building where education or early child-hood classes are held so you can find students interested in working with little ones.

When you have a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), entering the school system can be an overwhelming experience. Once you have finally adjusted to the kindergar-ten scene, it is already time to make the leap to first grade. Try the strategies below to make the transition smoother for you and your child.
Stay connected. During kindergarten, maintain an open dialogue with your child’s teachers and support staff. Ask what is going well and where challenges are occurring. This will give you a good sense about how your child is managing, before report cards come out. Checking in regularly with the current teacher will give you valuable information to help with planning the transition to first grade.
Gather your paperwork. Find the most current assessments from the professionals involved with your child. Use this information to help you advocate for them. Generally, schools will use the assessments you provide, to develop a support plan for your child, says Angie Birchard, a kindergarten teacher with expertise in working with special needs children and their families. Birchard stresses that both parents and the school have to work together as a team to make the transition happen smoothly.
Review past gains. You know it is important to be clear about where your child needs extra support. It is equally important to remember what they have achieved. Can your child sit a bit longer during circle time now? Is she beginning to use her visual schedule with less prompting? Make a list of these gains, so that you can ground yourself in the reality of how far your child has come. With children on the spectrum, progress can be slow, so it is even more important to acknowledge their gains, no matter how small.
Meet your teacher ahead of time. Once your child’s first grade teacher has been assigned, ask for an introductory meeting with him or her. If you want to have a smooth transition you need to be proactive, says Narmilee Dhayanandhan, speech and language thera-pist. Dhayanandhan has worked extensively with children, parents and professionals impacted by ASD for the past 10 years. She recommends that parents discuss ways of support-ing their child in the classroom, with the first grade teacher and support staff.
Drop in for a visit. Birchard suggests that both parent and child visit the classroom and the areas used for recess. She encourages parents to practice at home, some of the routines observed during the visit. Let’s say you noticed that the children in the class are able to sit and do work at their desks for 10 minutes. However, your child can barely get through 5 minutes of seated work before needing a sensory break. Dhayanandhan recommends practicing seated activities at home for short periods of time, followed by a long sensory break. As your child improves, make the seated time a little longer and the breaks a little shorter. Consider using a visual timer, says Dhayanandhan. She explains that the timer will give your child a concrete way of knowing how long they need to focus before their next break. Be sure to keep home practicing fun and engaging for your child.
Stay positive and focused. Some parents have encountered school staff that have not been receptive to working with them in a collaborative manner. “Parents need to stay as positive as possible, no matter how difficult,” says Birchard. In order to do this, be clear about what your child’s rights are and who has the power to ensure those rights are observed. Do your best to work with the classroom teacher, but if this is not working, keep moving up

the chain of command until your concerns are adequately addressed.
Be a detective. Observe and write down what works well at home and in the community for your child. Take note of what helps your child with transitions. Notice when they are able to sit and attend to a task. Notice what regulates them. The more information you can gather about what works well for your child, the better. Then, share this information with the first grade teacher during transition time.
Modify strategies for school. Not all strategies that work at home are feasible in a classroom especially if support staff is not available, shares Birchard. When this is the case, work closely with the school to create alternatives for your child that are based on what works at home, but make sense in the classroom.
Have fun at home. Dhayanandhan recommends giving your child play-based and academic opportunities at home. She explains that these opportuni-ties end up being the building blocks for first grade and beyond. For example, helping your child to develop pretend play skills, where they act out a character or play theme, helps your child develop flexibility and creativity in their
thinking. It is a challenge for most children on the spectrum to engage in pretend play. Check out the books “More Than Words” and “Talkability,” by Fern Sussman, for tips to get you started. With academics, Dhayanandhan states that creating routines that involve reading books together, looking at sight words, having fun with numbers and practicing writing skills will be great preparation for first grade and the homework it brings.
Have fun in the community. Swimming, gymnastics, and karate can be great opportuni-ties for your child to learn a new sport, but also prepare them for the next school year. Dhayanandhan explains that physical activities help to regulate the body, so that the mind is better able to learn. This will depend on what actually regulates your child. Not all children on the spectrum respond favorably to physical activity. Determine what works for your child and pursue those activities. If your child can tolerate it, community-based activities can also be great social opportunities and a time to work on attention and follow through skills.

We’ve all faced those moments – demands, pleading, whining, raised voices, crying,
screaming, and other manners of lashing out. These are examples of how toddlers misbehave, sometimes in public.
These moments often seem to occur when a parent is depleted or harried, and not in her best mindset. And even if a parent is, a toddler melting down in public can quickly take her to a place she’d rather not be – discomfort and embarrassment.
Children in the toddler ages are in the “I want it” stage, seeking independence and mastery over their world. Developmentally this is what toddlers should be doing. However, it is during this stage that parents should be helping their young ones understand that they are still in control. Parents should also be teaching their children about what they expect in public by expecting it at home – the ideal training ground.
What options does a parent have in handling private matters in public? What tools does a parent have at her disposal to deal with situations that can be akin to dry kindling being lit by a match and fanned by the wind? What’s a parent to do? And what should a parent avoid doing? DO take stock before you go. Is your child tired, hungry or uncomfortable? If the answer is “yes,” rethink. You are setting your child and you up for a less than stellar public experience. If you feel you need to go out and take your child with you, try to make sure he has had a nap or is rested, and make sure he’s had something to eat and drink
DO have the “magic” bag with you, or a large purse. Those diaper bags come in handy long after your
kids are out of diapers. Diaper bags hold a myriad of wonder-ful items, from sippy cups and snacks to wipes and an array of toys that distract. Take advantage of the magic bag, and occasionally replenish it. DO go over expectations and practice when opportunities present themselves at home. Review what behavior you want to see in your child before going out. Ask your child to repeat what you told them, i.e. “We are getting cat food for Sassy only.” This way you both know your toddler heard and understood you. DO be clear and follow through. Expectations are most effective when you are consistent with your message and with its delivery. You must be clear with your follow through as well. For example, if you tell your tod-dler, “If you throw a fit, we will not go to the park,” and your child does have a meltdown, you do not go to the park.
By Judy M. Miller
The Do’s (and Don’ts) of Handling Your
Toddler’s Public Meltdowns
24 Our Kids | Childcare & Preschool Finder June 2014 Childcare & Preschool Finder June 2014 | OurKidsSanAntonio.com 25
DO remember to take DEEP breaths. Are you tired, hungry or short on patience? If you must go out be aware of how you are feeling. Remember that your emotions only serve to fuel your toddler. He can smell it, and he reacts to it. If you trig-ger, your toddler will also react. A child learns his self-regulation through parental regula-tion. Think of yourself as the attuned alpha nurturing, calm, and neutral, but expectant of good behavior. Breathe. DO respond quickly if your child begins to meltdown. The quicker you respond the better. Toddlers have short fuses. Sometimes a child can regain his composure if you address his behavior immediately. This works well with a toddler that regularly behaves. Other times, a child may be deter-mined to win the challenge, for whatever reason. If your child becomes more manipu-lative or implodes, vacate, calmly. Shopping? Leave the cart. DON’T ignore your tod-dler engage him and be attuned to how he is feeling in public. Your engagement with your child can go a long way to stopping a tantrum before it even begins because he has your attention. Is your toddler calm or does he appear to be overwhelmed by his surroundings. DON’T reward your child for undesirable behavior or bribe him if he will stop. Negotiating and bribing allow your little one to savor the first sweet tastes of suc-cessful manipulation. A reward of this nature only encourages a child to misbehave again and possibly escalate. DON’T worry about other people surrounding you. Many of them are parents and have had similar experiences. Focus on your child and his behavior.
Judy M. Miller works with pre- and adoptive parents, equip-ping them with new techniques and information. She is the author of “What To Expect From Your Adopted Tween.”
