3. When the network map indicates that there is a problem, clicking the Click to troubleshootproblems button starts the Windows Network Diagnostics troubleshooter, asdescribed here and shown in Figure 2.

The Windows Network Diagnostics troubleshooter analyzes your network and eitherfixes the problem or suggests ways to find a solution.

On a wired network, it is a good idea to check cable connections when attempting tosolve a network problem. When a cable is not connected, the Network icon in thenotification area has a red X and a ScreenTip with this message: Not connected -No connections are available. Reconnecting the cable typically solves the problemwithout having to perform additional tasks.

4. When you are connected to your network, but you cannot connect to the Internet, you cantroubleshoot as described here and shown in Figure 3.

When there is a problem connecting to the Internet, the Network icon displays anexclamation point in a yellow triangle. On the network map, the Click to troubleshootproblems button displays between the Network and Internet icons.

Recall that connecting to your local network is different from connecting to theInternet. For broadband networks, your local network connects to the Internet byconnecting the router to a modem. Often, restarting your router or modem solvesInternet connection problems. Consult the manual for your router or modem beforerestarting them.

5. On a wireless network, you can change the connection settings by clicking Manage wirelessnetworks. In the Manage Wireless Networks window, right-click the broadcast name ofthe wireless router, and then click Properties. On the Security tab, you can change theconnection settings as described here and shown in Figure 4.

If a wireless router has changed its security type, encryption type, or security key, youmay have difficulty connecting to it. The Wireless Network Properties dialog box canbe used to change these settings.

6. If you have network problems after applying the previous techniques, in the Network andSharing Center, click Troubleshoot problems to open the Network and Internettroubleshooters as shown in Figure 5.

Recall that when troubleshooters cannot fix a problem, they provide alternativeoptions, including links to appropriate Help and Support pages. Consider alsoconsulting a computer professional.

7. From the student data files that came with this chapter, open w7_10_Network in WordPad.

8. Click the WordPad button , and then click Save As.

9. In the Save As dialog box, navigate to your Windows 7 Chapter 10 folder. In the File namebox, name the file Lastname_Firstname_w7_10_Network and then click Save.

10. On the first line of the WordPad document, change the name to your own first and lastname. Add a new line, click Date and time, and then click OK.

11. Mark your responses to the questions as directed in the WordPad document.

12. When you are done, click Save. Print the document or submit the file as directed by yourinstructor.
