Recall that file extensions are used to associate programs with files. For example, a file with a .txt file extension typically opens in Notepad. Certain types of files—JPEG images, for example—can be opened with programs other than the one that its file extension is associated with. You can associate a file extension with a different program when you want that program to open a specific file type. To complete this project, you will need the following folder: Chapter_07_folder You will save your file as: Lastname_Firstname_w7_07_Park 1. If necessary, insert the student CD that came with this chapter, and then Close the AutoPlay dialog box. 2. Start Windows Explorer , and then if necessary, Maximize the window. 3. Click Organize, and then click Folder and search options. In the Folder Options dialog box, click the View tab. Clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box, and then click OK. 4. In Windows Explorer, Open the student CD, and then display the chapter_07 file list. Copy w7_07_Park.jpg to the Pictures library. 5. In the Pictures library, navigate to, and then double-click w7_07_Park.jpg to open it in its default program. Recall that the default program associated with the .jpg file extension is Windows Photo Viewer. If a different program opened the photo on your computer, that program has been associated with the .jpg file extension. 6. 9. In the Open with submenu, click Paint to open the photo with Paint.

In this manner, you can open a file in a program other than the one it is currentlyassociated with.

10. Exit Paint. Click Start , and then click Control Panel. In the Control Panel window, clickthe Programs category. In the Programs window, under Default Programs, click Set yourdefault programs.

8. In Windows Explorer, right-click w7_07_Park.jpg, point to Open with, and then compareyour screen with Figure 1.

The Open with submenu displays several programs that can open a JPEG file. Anothertechnique is to select the file, and then on the Windows Explorer toolbar, click theOpen with button’s More Options arrow.

11. In the Set Default Programs window, under Programs, click Paint. Compare your screenwith Figure 2.

In the right pane of the Set Default Programs window, a description of the selectedprogram is provided. Here, three out of fourteen possible file extensions are associatedwith Paint. By clicking Set this program as default, all fourteen file extensions that canbe opened in Paint would be associated with Paint.

12. Click Choose defaults for this program, and then compare your screen with Figure 3.

The Set Program Associations window lists all the file types that the selected programcan work with. Each file type lists the file extension and the program currentlyassociated with it. Here, Windows Photo Viewer is associated with JPEG image files.

16. Create a Full-screen Snip, click Copy , and then Close the markup window withoutsaving the changes.

17. In the Set Program Associations window, select the .jpg check box, and then click Save.Close the Set Default Programs window.

18. In Windows Explorer, click Organize, and then click Folder and search options. On theView tab, select the Hide extensions for known file types check box, and then click OK.

19. In the Pictures library, delete w7_07_Park, and then Close the Windows Explorerwindow.

20. Start WordPad, type your first and last name, and then add a new line. Type Windows 7Chapter 7 More Skills 12

21. Add a new line. In the Insert group, click Date and time, and then click OK. Add a newline, and then Paste the snip.

22. Save the document in your Windows 7 Chapter 7 folder asLastname_Firstname_w7_07_Park

23. If you are printing your work, print the WordPad document. Exit WordPad.

24. Submit the WordPad printout or file as directed by your instructor.

13. Select the .jpg check box, and then click Save. Switch to the Pictures library, and thendouble-click w7_07_Park.jpg to verify that the program opens in Paint.
