Pressure Equalizing Tube

Abbreviation – PE Tube

Tube inserted inside the eardum of the child that assists in the drainage of fluid. Also aides in the stabilization of pressure between the middle ear and the outside atmosphere.

Needed because of recurrent ear infections

Also may be needed because of built up fluid in the eardrum that can cause hearing loss

Tube stays in place for 6 months to a year

If tube does not fall out naturally then surgery is needed to remove

Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat

Bone Conduction

Abbreviation – BC

The conduction of sound inside ones skull

Reason why a persons voice sounds higher to themselves than when it is played back to them through a recording device

Sound can be heard not only through the ear canal but also through vibrations carried directly to the inner ear by the vibrations of the skull

Assists in hearing of ones voice correctly

Both Ears

Abbreviation - AU

Otitus Media

Abbreviation – OM

Middle ear infection

Inflammation happens between the outer ear and the inner ear.

Pathogens travel from the nasopharynx to the middle ear via the eustachian tube

Often seen in childrenUsually there is a upper respiratory infection

before the OMFluid may be water or pus depending on

severity

Emmetropia

Abbreviation – EM

A state of vision where the eye can see things at a normal level

The eye can be relaxed and still focus on an image 20 feet away

Exotropia

Abbreviation – XT

Weak muscle of the eye (strabismus)

Outward turning of the eye

Also called wall-eyed

Results in loss of depth perception

Two different images are sent to the brain

Glasses can alleviate symptoms but surgery is often required to fix

Left eye

Abbreviation - OS

Extraocular Movement

Abbreviation – EOM

Testing involved called extraocular muscle functioning

Tests the function of the eye muscles

Simple test involving an object placed in front of ones vision then moved side to side to test that the muscles in the eye are functioning

Visual Acuity

Abbreviation – VAEye test involving the measurement of

sharpness of visionChart containing several different levels at

several different sizes
