SAVING PALOS WELCOME, SUMMER 2016The Village of Orland

Park welcomed summer Memorial Day Weekend with the 25th season debut of the Centennial Park Aquatics Center and our annual Memorial Day Ceremony. We proudly added the names of 35 veterans to the village’s memorial and were honored to have many of these veterans and their families join us for the ceremony.

We followed this inaugural weekend with outdoor concerts, the season debut of the Farmers’ Market and hosting the US Log Rolling Open at the village’s Lake Sedgwick in Centennial Park. This village first brought national attention and competitors from other states and countries to Orland Park for this exciting competition that was covered by Comcast SportsNet and facilitated by the Chicago Southland Convention and Visitors Bureau.

CELEBRATE AMERICA’S BIRTHDAYOrland Park’s observance of Independence Day includes a great celebration beginning July 1 with the annual Liberty Fun Run/Walk. We bring The City Lights Orchestra back to our Centennial Park West on July 3 and will present one of the best fireworks displays in the Chicago area on July 4th. Find all of the details on the village’s website at www.orlandpark.org<http://www.orlandpark.org/>.

LUXURY LIVING IN ORLAND PARKNinety7Fifty on the Park brought high-end luxury living to Orland Park in 2013, making available a new option for high-end rentals in the area. In addition to Ninety7fifty, the village welcomes The Residences of Orland Park Crossing to the area. These include four mid-rise elevator buildings, 38 two-story row homes and 25 three-story townhomes. Units range in size from approximately 700 to 1,370 square feet for apartment flats and 1,500 to 2,000 square feet for the row homes and townhomes. A successful community needs to offer a variety of housing options and Orland Park’s luxury rentals are a great option for quality living for those not wanting to purchase a home.

CRESCENT PARK IN DOWNTOWN ORLAND PARK If you haven’t been to one of the village’s outdoor concerts at Crescent Park, please join us. This outdoor venue, adjacent to the 143rd Street Train Station, is a beautiful setting for outdoor entertainment. Attendees bring their lawn chairs, umbrellas and refreshments and enjoy great performances by local musicians.

As we continue to develop Downtown Orland Park with the University of Chicago Medical Center and other developments coming in, we look forward to it being a true pedestrian friendly area where you can park your car and walk. This has been a primary objective

Do you know our During the first five years of your life, you learned more than you did in any other five-year period since. You learned a language, how to walk and run; you learned how to distinguish one

person from another and one object from another. You learned your colors, a few of your ABCs and to count at least to ten. You learned how to get up and down stairs, how to get around your yard and immediate neighborhood. You learned how to write a few characters, how to draw, how to bathe, how to brush your teeth, comb your hair and dress. One of the big achievements in learning was how to distinguish your right from your left. To accomplish all this learning and memory, you had to study, to concentrate. You did not allow yourself to be distracted; you kept on trying until you were successful.

Although we learned the most in those first five years, our learning never stops and we continue to grow and prosper and be successful.

The Chamber is the same way and, and after nearly sixty years in operation, we continue to grow and prosper because we have great people and their businesses part of our Chamber community. Again, I would like to mention our mission statement: The Orland Park Area

Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to being the primary resource helping business and the community grow and prosper. What can we do to support you?

Let us know. We listen. There were many great events in the past few months that supported our Chamber businesses:• One of the events that is close to my heart is the OWN (Orland Women’s Networking) event. We had a great day of connecting with other Women (220 attendees) and listening to a fabulous speaker, Andrea Darlas from WGN Radio. • In May the Ambassadors met at Scuba Emporium and got a great lesson about scuba and safety and met again in June at Dave and Busters. Dave and Busters supports many businesses and their events.• CAT 5 Restoration had a ribbon cutting that same day. They specialize in handling the complexities of disaster situations of any size.• Cooper’s Hawk held our prospective member extravaganza that was well attended and fun and showed prospective members all about our Chamber. • The Young Professionals met Dave and Busters in May and at Andy Varga’s summer picnic in June.• There was a ribbon cutting at Aishling Companion Home Care. Aishling

Mayor’s News and Notes— creating a walkable downtown area where people can enjoy great amenities like outdoor entertainment, restaurants, shopping, the beautiful greenery of the adjacent forest preserves and more. Once completed, it will be a great addition to all that Orland Park offers.

LAGRANGE ROAD UPDATEThe Illinois Department of Transportation’s ongoing LaGrange Road Improvement Project continues and it is the state’s intent to have three lanes of traffic open throughout the entire corridor for the entire holiday season. Again, we appreciate everyone’s patience and know that road construction can be difficult at times but we will all enjoy its completion once the project ends.

NATIONAL CITIZENS’ SURVEYThe village’s Community Wide Survey, conducted this past year, showed that residents continue to rate the quality of life in Orland Park as very high. Specific areas with high scores for the village included the village’s parks, recreation facilities, bike and pedestrian facilities and our ongoing efforts to preserve open space in the village. Residents also reported that they feel safe in Orland Park because of our Orland Park Police Department.

Resource CornerSocial Media For Your Business Submitted by Dan Peterson, Switch Consulting Grop, LLC

5 reasons why you should consider a social media consultant for your business

1. To correctly use social media for business

Social media for business is much different than having a personal Facebook page that you use to keep up with friends or having an Instagram account where you share your weekend adventures via photos. Social media for business requires strategy, understanding of new trends and rules, analytics, and how it will help to ultimately grow your business.

2. To be able to have actual number analytics

One of the most important reasons for hiring a social media consultant is that

What’s the best way to prepare an elevator pitch? Consider the nine Cs!

• Concise. Keep the pitch succinct and clear, with as few words as possible.

• Clear. The pitch should be easily understood by a layman, rather than filled with

they know how to measure growth within social media networks. This is a vital aspect of social media for business. It’s important to know if your efforts are paying off. While measuring the actual ROI of social media is very difficult, a social media consultant will be able to show you how

many impressions your posts are getting, how many people are interested in your page/business, how much of your social media traffic is actually visiting your website and much more.

3. To avoid a PR nightmare

It’s important to have someone with expert knowledge of your business

culture and position on topics when it comes to interacting with people on social media.

4. To bring more customers to your

businessEveryone is on social media

anymore. As a business it’s almost necessary for you to utilize it in your marketing strategy. The key is knowing which platforms work for you. You don’t need to be on every single network to see success.

5. To avoid being suedThis is a critical

reason to hire a social media consultant for your business. There are many things that you can do on social media that can get you in trouble and even worse, sued. Mistakes such as using a picture that is copyrighted, requiring employees to use their personal accounts for business or talking negatively about someone can get you in major trouble.

The Art of the Elevator Pitch

acronyms and industry terminology.

• Compelling. What problem does your business solve, and what can you do for your target audience?

• Credible. Spell out what

makes you qualified to do what you do, without using buzzwords like «outside the box» or «synergy.» Using credibility-driven words like «certified» will help sell you.

• Conceptual. Keep your pitch broad; don’t go into too many details.

•Concrete. The pitch should be tangible and easily grasped by your audience.

• Customized. Each target audience is different. The pitch should be tailored to the listeners.

• Consistent. No matter how many versions of your pitch you have, they should all convey the same basic message.

• Conversational. Start the conversation, and hook your target. Keep it casual, and don’t try to close a deal in the pitch.

Submitted by Mary Hastings, Orland Township“News” From Orland Township

Here’s a look at what’s happening at Orland Township:

The Orland Township Health Services department is hosting its annual back-to-school health fair. The free fair is scheduled for Saturday, July 30, 2016 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the grounds of the township, 14807 S. Ravinia Avenue. No appointment is necessary but participants must display proof of residency. The Health Services department also has an immunization clinic August 16, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the township.

The Orland Township Youth and Family Counseling Services department offers a variety of valuable services, including counseling on a sliding scale basis, anger management and parenting classes. Call (708) 403-4001 for information on upcoming events.

The Orland Township Food Pantry, which provides emergency food to residents in need of immediate assistance, now has triple the capacity and a dedicated entrance for residents as part of the Township’s ongoing efforts to better serve the local community. The renovated Food Pantry was formally launched on Wednesday, June 1 with a ribbon cutting and grand re-opening celebration.

“We wanted to find a way to assist our fellow citizens who have fallen on hard times,” said Orland Township Supervisor Paul O’Grady. “We want to reach out and help our neighbors and that’s the purpose of the Food Pantry. With the renovation, it’s better and stronger than ever.”

The Food Pantry assists more than 300 families every month by providing donated non-perishable items, frozen and refrigerated foods, and bakery goods. In recent years, it has served more middle-aged residents – many downsized from corporate jobs and no longer eligible for unemployment benefits – in addition to the single moms and others trying to balance a job and care for their families.

The Orland Township Senior Services departments has these events coming up in the months of July & August:

July 5-Senior Summer Fun Luncheon (Residents Only) 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.July 14-Hawaiian Luau Dinner Dance, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.August 18-50s Sock Hop Dinner Dance Time 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.August 24-Fireside Theater Trip-“Singing In the Rain” 7:45 a.m. to 7:30 p.mAugust 25-End of the Summer Fun & Games 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

To register for these events or for more information call (708) 403-4222.

Orland Township is pleased to announce Laura Alberts as the new 2016 Senior American Idol Champion. Ms. Alberts won the

competition, May 19, beating out 15 contestants at Georgios Banquet Hall located at 8800 W. 159th Street in Orland Park. More than 600 people watched the singing platform as the judges looked on and tabulated the final scores. Ms. Alberts’ final song of “Luck be a Lady” proved to be the winning harmony, singing it once again on Friday May 20 while appearing on the FOX32 morning show “Good Day Chicago.”

“Orland Township’s Senior American Idol was a terrific event for our seniors and the entire community,” said Supervisor O’Grady. “Once again it lived up to all the excitement as the performers and many of their family and friends joined in on all the fun and spirited music. Every year the singing gets more and more sensational, all the presentations were amazing.”

Orland Township’s monthly television program, Township Tempo, is now on air! Tune into Orland Park Television and Tinley Park Television (both Comcast Cable channel 4, AT&T U-Verse channel 99) to see what’s new at the Township.

For more information about the programs and events we offer, follow Supervisor O’Grady and the Township on Facebook, www.facebook.com/supervisorogrady, or call (708)403-4222. Visit us at www.orlandtownship.org to see our blog, video gallery and photos from some of our recent events.

Mayor (continued from page 2)with live entertainment on two stages returns August 5-7 at the Village Center. Full details about this year’s Taste of Orland Park can be found in the recreation area of the village’s website at www.orlandpark.org <http://www.orlandpark.org/>. A highlight of the weekend will be the Veterans’ Commission’s Welcome Home Concert for Vietnam Veterans. We invite all Vietnam Veterans to join us on Sunday, August 7 at 1pm for special welcome home celebration with a Creedence Clearwater Revival Tribute Band.

ZERO WASTE AT THE TASTEThe village continues its ongoing sustainability efforts and is implementing a ZERO WASTE AT THE TASTE MAYOR’S CHALLENGE wanting to reduce the amount of trash generated at the Taste. This initiative will make labeled toters to the Taste, enabling attendees to separate their trash and earmark items for recycling and/or composting. Last year, more than 180 cubic yards of trash were generated and we want to make every effort to reduce, reuse and recycle what we can from the Taste.

We are inviting community groups to help with this effort offering money for their organizations in exchange for their help.

THANK YOU AND WELCOMEOrland Park has a vibrant business community and the village appreciates all that our businesses do. We welcome the new businesses that have come to town and wish all of you a great summer 2016.
