Preliminary numbers from the Illinois Uniform Crime Report (IUCR) indicate that Orland Park had a 17.1% drop in criminal offenses in 2017 versus 2016. The statistics show that Orland Park had the lowest number of criminal offenses since 2003 despite a significant increase in population and residential and commercial development since that time.
Property crimes decreased by 241 from 1335 to 1094. The largest property crime decreases were for theft which dropped from 1263 to 1059 and burglary which dropped from 53 to 20. This is the lowest number of burglaries in over 25 years. This is a testament to the leadership of Police Chief Tim McCarthy, Deputy Chief Joe Mitchell and the men and women of the Orland Park Police Department. They have my deepest gratitude for all their hard work.
We also had a successful shopping season in the village’s many retail areas. The police department’s Retail Detail brings uniformed officers into shopping areas where they are
visible and talk with retailers and shoppers.
Learn more about the progress the village made in 2017 at the State of the Village Address on Thursday, May 17 at the Orland Park Civic Center. Watch the local media for details.
During the nine-day period from February 3 until February 11, 2018, a total of 22 inches of snow fell in Orland Park. I send my public thanks to all the village people who spent much of that nine-day period plowing, clearing and shoveling to make sure that village streets and facilities were safe and accessible.
Our heartfelt thanks also goes to our many first responders --- those from the Orland Park Police Department and the Orland Fire Protection District. It’s not easy getting around when more than a foot of snow falls at one time and we thank you for all that you do for the people of Orland Park, regardless of the weather conditions.
All area seniors are invited to the Senior Coffee hosted by Village Trustee Jim Dodge and me on Friday, March 16, 2018 at the Orland Park Civic Center. Encourage your favorite seniors
to stop in for a cup of coffee, some conversation and a presentation of interest to our many seniors. We’ll be at the Civic Center from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. on the 16th.
In early February, the village board approved the creation of a technology commission to help guide us on aspects of technology implementation and management. We are looking for village resident volunteers with backgrounds in technology to serve on this board. Those interested in serving can send a letter of intent and a current resume to me at the Village Hall.
Orland Park welcomed 165 new businesses in 2017 and on behalf of the Village Board, I extend a warm welcome to these companies that have chosen Orland Park.
Over the coming year, I will continue to focus on improving village processes, economic development and infrastructure improvements to help both our residents and businesses.
I look forward to a great 2018 in Orland Park!

communication. I have also been a spokesperson for a federation of charities and have a number of non-profit clients. I live my life in service. This philosophy has served me well as a leader and I truly enjoy being around people to help them bring out the best in themselves. This being said, I have high expectations of others as well as myself. My personal goal is to rest my head on my pillow each night knowing I have done the best I can do with this day. I am constantly learning and growing my abilities and believe I have something to learn from each person I meet.
Here’s where I need your help… I am not a mind reader. I need your feedback and insight so that I can better serve your needs in the community. While I can’t make promises to grant your wishes, I can at least hear you out and provide direction. I also have much to learn from you.
I had the opportunity to visit
with many of you at the installation gala. Energy was high and it was a wonderful evening. I appreciate all who were able to attend. The outpouring of support is overwhelming. Thank you!
Our Legislative Update was held on January 31, 2018 and was very well attended. Again, thank you to the Legislative Committee for hours in preparation and thanks to the Bridge Teen Center for hosting this fabulous event.
We have many more events in the wings. Please check out our chamber calendar and register online. I believe the greatest gift we can give anybody is the gift of our time. Thank you for giving yours in reading this letter. I look forward to seeing you soon.
I appreciate you!

Dear OPACC Members, I am not one for "fluffy talk", so I'll cut to the quick and let you move on with your day.
I realize that some of you don’t know me or what I’m about. I will take a moment of your time to share with you a bit of my insight and experience. I am the CEO/Founder of Metamorphosis. We are a Communications Training and Consulting Firm. Over a decade ago, I owned a retail storefront in Tinley Park called, “Angels Among Us.” In that capacity, we sold self-improvement books and gifts. We hosted workshops out of the back space of the store and it was an amazing moment in time. Through my experience in retail ownership and in multiple chambers, I have a pulse on the needs of small businesses. Through my national experience as a trainer, I host the gift of

City Barbeque City Barbeque will be loading up the smokers in Orland Park this April, and are so excited to be part of the neighborhood. So this spring, if you’re in the mood for some national award– winning hickory-smoked meats, made-from- scratch sides, indulgent desserts, and a healthy dose of backyard hospitality, be sure to stop by and see ‘em at 14301 S. LaGrange Rd!
Orland Park will be City Barbeque’s second Chicagoland location. City Barbeque started out back in 1999 in Ohio — where construction delays lead to our founder prepping catering spreads in his garage, smokers in his driveway, and baked beans cooking in his neighbors’ ovens. We’ve still got that cooking-in-the- garage mentality, but now the smokers are in each of our restaurants. We have joints across Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, North Carolina, and Georgia with our purpose being to serve and create happiness – and our General Manager Jeff Rennemeyer and Market Leader Clint Umphrey are ready to do just that here in Orland! Stay up to date with our opening, community celebration and upcoming promotions at www.facebook.com/CityBarbequeOrlandPark or check out our menu at www.citybbq.com!

Resource CornerBlock Chain
Bitcoin and other crypto currencies are all the rage today and are based on a block chain technology. I understand why, because even as I write this Bitcoin is worth $8,936.74, when one year ago it was only worth $1,010. Though it did go as high as $19,205.11 in mid-December, so sorry to all of those who got on the band wagon late. As much as crypto currencies are all the rage, there are over 1,000 of them, we are in our infancy in the Block Chain Era. I should start with some definitions.
First – what is Block Chain? Block Chain simply is an immutable public ledger that is updated at multiple sites using computer cryptography to ensure its validity.
Bitcoin – the original Crypto Currency that proved the Block Chain created by a group or person names Satoshi (who is/are like a ghost). Currently a very simple demonstration of a currency with some places taking bitcoin as payment for goods and services. There is no physical “coin” it is all digital. It is a 256-bit number
Wallet – A wallet is where crypto currencies live. And real currencies. US News has a top five list, be careful because your wallet is the biggest risk.
Exchange – a site that you can buy and sell your Crypto Currencies.
Coinbase – an App / Wallet and Exchange that lets you trade Crypto Currencies using a credit card or linked to your bank account.
Electrum – A free wallet that was created in 2011, but is only supported on the Andriod platform.
Paper – Many people keep their “currency” on paper – just a list of the numbers
Submitted by: James Harmening - Computer Bits, Inc.
MEMBERSHIP TIP OF THE MONTH
What are some of the Pros to Crypto Currencies – 1. You can detect fraudulent records easily and self heal the ledger. 2. No government controls the value (though some are prohibiting its use) 3. I believe governments are going to move to crypto currencies of their own. 4. New Crypto Currencies like Ethereum are smarter than bitcoin and allow the programming of more information attached to the transaction. So think Digital Contracts that are smart based upon dates and upon other transactions.
What are some Cons to Crypto Currencies – 1. Used by Drug dealers and law breakers because you are anonymous when using Crypto Currency. (think using cash for illegal deals – same thing) Although the transactions are all public, you need to know someone’s public “key” to know what transactions they have made. It is just a ledger of numbers. 2. If you lose the number you lose the value – just like paper money. So using a service like Coinbase to store the crypto currency “number” allows you to recover the number through your email / phone. 3. It is very volatile right now and we don’t know which currency to trust.
Kodak is creating and ICO (initial Coin Offering) to track the rights to digital pictures. Artists will be able to track the ownership of their photo after they sell it and the buyer can sell it to someone and they can be sure that the artist really did the photo and they are getting the original.
There should be a ledger for property ownership based upon block chain technology. It could disrupt the real estate transaction business. Deloitte is a big player in this space. Lease Agreements, Automated Payments, improvement of Property search, just to name a few areas they are involved in.
There is much more to Crypto Currencies and the Block Chain. Hopefully we can talk more in the future – it is a technology that will become more of a standard in the next 5-10 years.
