Report by Gopalaswamy Ramesh, IIITB andH.R. Mohan, Chair Div II, CSI & IEEE CS

The principles recommended are:1. Don’t criticize, condemn or complain.

Instead of condemning people, lets tryto understand them, a lot more profitableand intriguing than criticism: and it breedssympathy, tolerance and kindness.

2. Give honest and sincere appreciation. Be“hearty in your approbation and lavishin your praise and people will cherishyour words and treasure them and repeatthem over a lifetime-repeat them yearsafter you had forgotten them.”

3. Arouse in the other person an eager want.“Self expression is the dominantnecessity of human nature. When we havea brilliant idea, instead of making othersthink it is our, let them stir the ideathemselves, they will the regard it as theirown and they will like it, and maybe eata couple helpings of it.”

4. Become genuinely interested in otherpeople. If you want others to like you, ifyou want to develop real friendships, ifyou want to help others, at the same timeas you help yourself, keep this principlein mind.

5. Smile. Your smile is a messenger of yourgoodwill. Your smile brightens the livesof all who see it. To someone who hasseen a dozen people frown, scowl or turntheir faces away, your smile is like thesun breaking through the clouds.

6. Remember that a person’s name is to thatperson the sweetest and most importantsound in any language. The informationwe are imparting or the request we aremaking, takes on a special importancewhen we approach the situation with thename of the individual.

7. Be a good listener. Encourage others totalk about themselves. Remember thatthe people you are talking to are ahundred times more interested inthemselves and their wants and problems

How To Win Friends and Influence Peoplethan they are in you and your problems.

8. Talk in terms of the other person’sinterest. Talking in terms of the otherperson’s interest pays off for both parties.

9. Make the other person feel important -and do in sincerely. Talk to people aboutthemselves and they will listen for hours

10. The only way to get the best of;anargument is to avoid it.

11. Show respect for the other person’sopinions. Never say “you’re wrong.”Don’t argue, instead use diplomacy.

12. If you are wrong, admit it quickly andemphatically. Remember the old proverb,“by fighting you never get enough, but byyielding, you get more than you expected.”

13. Begin in a friendly way. Remember whatLincoln said: A drop of honey catchesmore flies than a gallon of gall.”

14. Get the other person saying “yes, yes”immediately.

15. Let the other person do a great deal oftalking.

16. Let the other person feel that the idea ishis or hers.

17. Try honestly to see things from the otherperson’s point of view. An increasedtendency to think always in terms of theother person’s point of view and seethings from that person’s angle as well asyour own.-if you get only that one thingfrom this book, it may easily proved to beone of the stepping-stones of your career.

18. Be sympathetic with the other person’sideas and desires.

19. Appeal to their nobler motives. Makepeople feel that you consider themhonest, upright and fair.

20. Dramatize your ideas.21. Throw down a challenge. Every successful

person wants a chance of self expression,

the chance to prove one’s worth.22. Begin with praise and honest

appreciation.23. Call attention to peoples mistakes

indirectly.24. Talk about your own mistakes, before

criticizing the other person.25. Ask questions, instead of giving direct

orders.26. Let the other person save face.27. Praise the slightest improvement and

praise every improvement. Be “heartyin your approbation; and lavish in yourpraise.”

28. Give the other person a fine reputationto live up to.

29. Use encouragement. Make the fault seemeasy to correct.

30. Make the other person happy about doingthe thing you suggest. Experience’s ofmost people show that you are morelikely to change attitudes this way.Excerpts from the book “How To Win

Friends and Influence People” by DaleCarnegie. The book is all about buildingrelationships. With good relationships; personaland business success are easy.

ABSTRACT:

The practice of medicine has seen anaccelerated incorporation of technicalinnovations. Nanotechnology is a hybrid science, which manipulates atoms individually andplaces them in a pattern to produce a desiredstructure. The Nano particles seek to increasethe effectiveness of cancer treatment whiledecreasing side effects. Prepared from abiocompatible, biodegradable polymer, theNanoparticles protect a cancer drug from harshconditions in the human body. They also helpdeliver drugs to the right location in the body, and allow for their release in a controlled mannerto maintain an adequate drug dose for extendedperiods. In addition, modifying the surface ofthese Nanoparticles delivery systems canpermit drugs to circulate in the blood longer, and can target specific tissues of the body. Asthe existing techniques are not up to ourrequirements, we would like to design a Nandevice that would be effective in cancerprevention, early detection and diagnosis. Thistechnique uses adoptive therapy, immunetherapy and a lot. Thus detecting and treatingthe malignant tumors in an efficient and costeffective way.

INTRODUCTION:

What is cancer?

Cancer is the general name for over 100medical conditions involving uncontrolled anddangerous cell growth. Scientists suggest thatsome cancer is caused by genetic factors, whileother forms are caused by environmentalconditions.

Treatments available and their hazards:

Treatment for cancer ranges from roundsof powerful chemicals to focused burst ofradiation to complete surgical removal of thetumor and surrounding tissue. Each treatmenttype brings a certain level of risk and pain to thepatient, but cancerous cells left untreated willalmost inevitably choke off vital organs andcirculation. Chemotherapy introduces strongmedicines, which target fast-growing cells, butthis also includes normal events such as hairgrowth and digestion. Radiation treatments useheat energy to literally burn off malignant cells, but healthy tissue is also damaged. Surgicalremoval can lead to a permanent recovery, but

The Dance of Molecules undetected malignant cells may have alreadymetastasized to other organs.

Curing cancer has been a major goal ofmedical researchers for decades, butdevelopment of new treatments takes time andmoney. Already there are many forms of cancer, which are no longer considered untreatable. Some cancers, such as leukemia (blood cancer),can actually stop growing as suddenly as theystarted. This is called remission, and is oftenseen as a tremendous blessing for patients whohave fought their conditions for years. Sciencemay yet find the root causes of all cancers anddevelop safer methods for shutting them downbefore they have a chance to grow or spread. Acell in the kidney, although it contains the samegenetic information as a brain cell, performs acompletely separate role. Cancer happens whena tiny part of the cell’s mechanism goes wrong.

HAZARDS:

Destroys red blood cells, causing anemia

Destroys both the cancer-producing cellsand the healthy, infection-fighting cells, decreasing the body’s ability to fight offinfection.

A margin of healthy tissue is oftenresected to make sure all cancerous tissueis removed during surgery.

Chemotherapy introduces strongmedicines, which target fast-growingcells, but this also includes normal eventssuch as hair growth and digestion.

NANOMEDICINE:

Of all the beneficiaries of this scientificrevolution, the biological and medical scienceswill reap many of the earliest fruits of thisresearch. Biological molecules by virtue of theirsize may be classified as nanostructures. Theinteraction among the complex mechanisms oflife may be seen as simply chemistry, or asspecialized interactions between nanostructures.Molecular nanotechnology has been defined asthe three-dimensional positional control ofmolecular structure to create materials anddevices to molecular precision. The human bodyis comprised of molecules; hence the availabilityof molecular nanotechnology will permitdramatic progress in human medical services.More than just an extension of “molecularmedicine,” nanomedicine will employ molecularmachine systems to address medical problems, and will use molecular knowledge to maintainand improve human health at the molecular scale.Nanomedicine will have extraordinary and far-

reaching implications for the medical profession, for the definition of disease, for the diagnosisand treatment of medical conditions includingaging, and ultimately for the improvement andextension of natural human biological structureand function.

“Nanomedicine is the preservation andimprovement of human health using moleculartools and molecular knowledge of the humanbody.”

PROPOSED SYSTEM:

Prevent the disease:

As we know a person can developmalignant tumor when he is exposed toradiations from radioactive metals.Nanoparticles could be used to avoid theseradiations by injecting them into our body thuspreventing cancerous growth. A nanoparticle isa microscopic particle whose size is measuredin nanometers (nm). It is defined as a particlewith at least one dimension <200nm.

There are specific nano particles whichavoid these radiations; these could be injectedinto the body of the scientists who areperforming research with radioactive metals. This would be an effective preventive measure.

Treating the disease:

US Researchers Say Changing the Shapeof Gold Nano Spheres Can Improve theEffectiveness of Non-Invasive CancerTreatments.

PROOF:

A team of investigators at Rice Universityhave also found that elongated nanostructureshave a unique set of optical properties that couldbe useful in various cancer research applications.

Using our immune system:

An important aspect of dealing withcancer is supporting the immune system. Afterall, for most of your life the immune systemhas successfully dealt with cancer cells. It mustbecome worn out, ineffective and unable to dealwith the cancer cells before cancer takes holdand thrives. So it may be quite important tostrengthen the immune system so that it canbetter fight cancer. Especially if you are gettingmedical treatments that wipe out the immunesystem, and make the body more acidic to boot.

Our Nanodevice could be effective incancer prevention, early detection anddiagnosis.

It will insert nano particles into each

10 Fool-proof predictions for the Internetin 2020

Network World offers 10 “surefire bets”about what the Internet will look like in 10 years. They include:

As computer scientists work to improvethe Internet’s design, the global networkis expected to change dramatically overthe next 10 years. The Internet currentlyhas about 1.7 billion users, but the U.S.National Science Foundation (NSF)expects the Internet will have nearly 5billion users by 2020.

The Internet also will be moregeographically dispersed in 10 years, spreading to more developing regions.

Ten years from now, the Internet will be anetwork of things, not computers. Today, the Internet has approximately 575million host computers, but the NSFexpects infrastructure sensors alone tosurpass the number of host computersby several orders of magnitude.

The Internet also will carry more content.Cisco estimates that global Internet trafficwill increase to about 44 exabytes permonth by 2012.

In 2020, the Internet will be wireless. Inthe second quarter of 2009, the numberof mobile subscribers hit 257 million, representing an 85 percent increase year-

Infobits over year for high-speed data networkingtechnologies. By 2014, approximately2.5 billion people will subscribe to someform of mobile broadband, according toInforma.

More services will use cloud computing. The NSF is encouraging researchers todevelop better ways to map users andinformation in a cloud-computinginfrastructure.

Ten years from now, the Internet alsowill be greener. Future Internetarchitecture needs to be more energyefficient, as the amount of energy usedby the Internet doubled between 2000and 2006, according to the LawrenceBerkeley National Laboratory.

Network management will be moreautomated in 2020. The NSF isresearching new network managementtools for the future Internet, includingautomated reboot systems, self-diagnosisprotocols, finer-grained data collection, and better event tracking.

The Internet will not rely on constantconnectivity. Researchers are studyingcommunication techniques that canhandle delays or easily forwardinformation to different users.

The Internet will attract more hackers, and computer scientists will work tomake it more secure.

The Year in Robotics

In 2009, researchers developed newrobots that can perform a variety of tasks, including medical rehabilitation, militaryoperations, and mimicking social skills. Manyresearchers think giving robots social skills willhelp them assist people in homes, schools, andhospitals. A Carnegie Mellon University groupcreated a robot that knows when to speak basedon eye contact, while University of Californiaresearchers built a machine-learning program thatallows a robotic head to develop more accuratefacial expressions. A group of Swiss inventorscreated generations of robots that evolved todeceive each other when exposed to limitedresources. University of Calgary researchersmodified a Roomba to move away from a userwhen it detects high stress levels. Many robotswere developed to help improve rehabilitationby monitoring and adjusting a patient’smovement. This year also saw greatdevelopment in robotic grasping technology.Columbia University researchers were able tomake more efficient robotic hands by limitingtheir dexterity to be similar to that of a humanhand. The U.S. Defense Advanced ResearchProjects Agency developed the Chembot, whichcan squeeze under doors and other smallopenings.

patient’s lymphocytes to make themcapable of recognizing the tumor cells.

“It gives the cells a new property thatthey’ve never had before”.

It tries to harness the body’s built-indisease-fighting cells against canceroustumors, an approach called immunotherapy.

The body’s immune system is designedto repel invaders, and cancer typicallydoesn’t raise an alert because theproliferating cells within each tumor arethe body’s own.

This Nanodevice detects the cancersensitive cells and boosts their number, thus increasing the number of tumorfighting cells. This technique is called as“adoptive therapy”.

As the number of cancer sensitive cellsincrease they would destroy any

cancerous growth at its origin.

Advantages:

“With the nanospheres we’re usingvisible lasers, but most of the solid canceris under the tissues and visible lightdoesn’t go but a few millimeters deep.

By using the nanorods we can tune themto react to the infrared lasers, which canpenetrate the tumor without beingabsorbed by the tissues

There will be no harm to the normal cellsas no toxic drugs are being injected intothe body.

As no foreign organisms are injected todestroy the cancerous cells, they will notbe further activated.

Numbers of infection fighting cells areincreased leading to a higher immunity

power throughout the body.

It is a cost effective way.

Fast growing cells like hair cells anddigestive cells are not killed unlike thecase of chemotherapy treatment.
