CH 8 Warm Up #1 4/10

Answer the following questions about the videos we watched yesterday

1. Which food let off the most heat (potato chip, almond, or brazil nut)?

2. Which one stored the most energy?3. Which would you eat for getting the most energy?4. How do we get the energy out of food? (best guess)5. What is one other thing you remember about the

video?

Agenda 4/10

• CH 8 Notes #1• Thinking Maps & Question

Page 3: CH 8 Warm Up #1 4/10

CH 8 Notes #1 Matter and Energy

Page 4: CH 8 Warm Up #1 4/10

Matter

• Anything that has mass and takes up space

Page 5: CH 8 Warm Up #1 4/10

Atoms• The smallest unit of matter– Protons (+ charge)– Electrons (- charge)– Neutrons (no charge)

Page 6: CH 8 Warm Up #1 4/10

• Elements: atoms of the same type– Examples: Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen

– Non-examples: Carbon dioxide, Water

Page 7: CH 8 Warm Up #1 4/10

• Chemical bond: the attraction holding atoms together

Energy is stored in these bonds

Page 8: CH 8 Warm Up #1 4/10

• Two or more atoms joined is a molecule

• Molecules with at least 2 different elements in them are compounds

Page 9: CH 8 Warm Up #1 4/10

Major elements in living things

• There are over 100 elements on the periodic table

• Only 6 elements make up most of the parts of living things (CHNOPS)

Page 10: CH 8 Warm Up #1 4/10

The 6 most common elements in living things (CHNOPS)

• C Carbon• H Hydrogen• N Nitrogen• O Oxygen• P Phosphorus• S Sulfur

Check for Understanding

• Turn to your neighbor & answer these questions :be ready to share-out for points!

1) What do we call atoms of the same type?2) What holds atoms together?3) What is stored in these bonds?4) What is CHNOPS?

Matter & Energy

• Law of Conservation of Matter & Energy: Matter and energy cannot be destroyed or created, only changed

Page 13: CH 8 Warm Up #1 4/10

There are 7 forms of energy, we’re going to focus on these 3

1. Light

2. Heat

3. Chemical

Page 14: CH 8 Warm Up #1 4/10

Living things need energy

• Living things need energy to -Grow-Move-Replace/Repair-Cell functions-Body functions

Page 15: CH 8 Warm Up #1 4/10

Living things get energy from food by…

Page 16: CH 8 Warm Up #1 4/10

Living things get energy from food by breaking and forming new chemical bonds

Page 17: CH 8 Warm Up #1 4/10

Important: Some organisms make their own food (e.g. plants). Others must get it

by eating (e.g. animals, fungi)

Page 18: CH 8 Warm Up #1 4/10

• Calories: The energy stored in the chemical bonds of food

Page 19: CH 8 Warm Up #1 4/10

• Calories: The energy stored in the chemical bonds of food

• Food also gives us the pieces for building other molecules (biosynthesis)

Page 20: CH 8 Warm Up #1 4/10

Some examples of heat energy being released

• A person eats hamburger, allowing her muscles to move

• A raccoon eats crayfish, allowing it to keep its body warm

• A plant breaks down sugars, heating-up its flower and pumping a smell into the air

CFU

1 = A2 = B3 = C4 = D

Page 22: CH 8 Warm Up #1 4/10

1. All living things need to eat other things to get energy

A. TrueB. False

Page 23: CH 8 Warm Up #1 4/10

CFU: Multiple Choice & Debate

2. Which of these explains how living things get energy from food

A. They split the atoms into protons and neutrons

B. They absorb heat from the foodsC. They break chemical bonds & form new ones

Page 24: CH 8 Warm Up #1 4/10

3) Which food would give you the most energy?A. 100 caloriesB. 500 caloriesC. 300 caloriesD. 400 calories

Page 25: CH 8 Warm Up #1 4/10

4. What do living things use energy for?A. GrowB. ReproduceC. SurviveD. Replace cells

Page 26: CH 8 Warm Up #1 4/10

5. Heat, light, and chemical are all types of:A. EnergyB. MatterC. ElementsD. All three

Page 27: CH 8 Warm Up #1 4/10

6) TRUE/FALSE When paper is burned the chemicals in the paper are destroyed and energy is released

Page 28: CH 8 Warm Up #1 4/10

Thinking Maps

• Create two circle mapsOne on MatterOne on Energy

• Each must include facts for each• On the back write 1 sentence explaining how

matter and energy are related

Page 29: CH 8 Warm Up #1 4/10

• Matter is what all things are made of• Energy is what all things need to move/change
