Induction motors

CG Electric System Hungary's induction motor seriesmeet the requirements of all industrial fields in awide range of rated power, voltage, speed andenclosures.

Our motors are supplied in compliance with theapplicable IEC Standards. In particular, they complywith the following Standards:• BS 4999 (U. K.)• VDE 0530 – Teil 1 (Germany)Upon request, motors complying with the US NEMAStandards MG.1. may also be supplied. Outputratings, main fixing and coupling dimensions(frame size etc.) of motors comply with IECPublication 72-2.

Standard conditions for rated output are as follow:• Continuous duty (S1) at rated voltage and rated

frequency• Height above sea level not exceeding 1000 m• Ambient temperature not exceeding 40 ºC• Temperature of cooling water at inlet of heat

exchanger not exceeding 25 ºC• Rated voltage: 6 kV• Frequency: 50 Hz.

Motors can be designed to operate on Class Ftemperature rise. In this case the rated load may beincreased app. 13%. We can also deliver motorswith other rated voltage levels between 0.4–15 kVand for 60 Hz, too.

Our Quality Assurance Program covers design,procurement, manufacturing and testing. Thisprogram meets the requirements of relevantInternational Standards such as:Quality Management System ISO 9001:2000 and

Environmental Management System ISO14001:2004.The Quality System has been assessed by EQNet.

All motors are individually routine tested. Type orany special tests may be performed and will bequoted upon request.

Our standard constructions and mountingarrangements are IM B3 or IM V1 (IM 1001 or IM3011) according to IEC 60034-7. Upon request,other versions are available for example IM B20 orIM B35 and others.

Degree of protection of the motors complies with thefollowing standards : IEC 60034-5 and DIN 40050.

The method of cooling of motors complies with theIEC 60034-6 Standard. The standard ventilationmethod of protected type machine is IC 01. Thestandard built in air-to-water heat exchangers(machines IC 81W7) are designed allowing 5 Ktemperature rise in water. Upon request we supplymotors with coolers also for sea-water. Ductventilated – IC 31 – motors are also available.Standard air-cooled closed motor is as per IC 611.

Stator laminations are made of high-grade insulatedelectrotechnical steel-sheets. MICASYSTEM, theclass F insulating system specially developed forstator windings of AC motors is used for voltagerating from 400 up to 15000 V. This high reliabilityadvanced insulating system is based on the use ofcured mica tapes and vacuum pressure

impregnation with a blend of solvent less epoxyresin. MICASYSTEM, which was developed throughlong research and extensive testing activity, providesexcellent dielectric and mechanical properties and allphysical characteristics needed by the differentapplications of motors.

Low noise and vibration is obtained by:• rugged mechanical construction• streamlined design of fans and air ducts to

secure optimum air flow.Our motors meet the requirements of IEC 60034-9,IEC 60034-14 and VDI 2056. Noise silencers areavailable upon request.

We produce motors for potentially explosiveatmosphere with the following degrees of protection:• Increased safety motors: EExe• Pressurised motors: EExp• Non sparking motors: EExn (IEC 60079).

· Pole changing asynchronous motors· Asynchronous generator

Terminal boxes consist of a sturdy weldedconstruction with ample space for connecting theincoming cables. Basic design enables cableconnections from bottom (standard) as well as fromthe top right and left, by turning the box in steps of90 degrees. The terminal boxes comply with IP 55degree of protection according to IEC 60034-5, and

are designed and built to withstand the thermal anddynamic stresses of an eventual phase-to-phaseshort-circuit in the terminal box or in the winding.

Upon request IP 56 terminal box is available. Neutralterminal with or without current transformers, low orhigh voltage extra size main terminal boxes withlightning arrestors and surge capacitors are alsoavailable. Phase segregated terminal boxes andterminal boxes with Elastimould connectors also canbe supplied.

Our motors are normally fitted with antifrictionbearings. For horizontal construction (IM 1001), thefixed bearing is usually located at the drive endwhereas the floating bearing is at the non drive-end.The fixed bearing on drive side is double one,consisting of a cylindrical roller bearing for radialload and a deep groove ball bearing to withstand theaxial thrust.

For high axial loads, double row self-aligningspherical roller bearing is applied. Bearingcompartments are equipped with relubricatingdevice and SPM adapters. For IP 55 protection thebearings are sealed with additional V-rings. Sleevebearings are available upon request.

Bearing configuration for vertical machines isselected taking into account the following designparameters:• speed and dead load of the rotor;• hydraulic upthrust and/or downthrust at running

and starting conditions from coupled pumps.

Basic configuration for medium-size motors, 4poles and above, includes one single-row angular-contact grease lubricated ball bearing located in theupper shield having combined thrust and guidefunction, plus one deep-groove grease-lubricatedball bearing in the lower shield with guide functiononly. The lower bearing is free to slide axially toallow the thermal expansion of the shaft.

For severe conditions the basic configuration can bemodified providing two angular-contact greaselubricated self-cooled ball bearings in tandem.

Another configuration, especially designed forlow-speed motors with heavy rotors, includes onespherical roller thrust bearing to carry axial load andone deep-groove ball bearing performing the guidefunction on the upper side. Each bearing is self-cooled or provided with water cooled oil lubrication.In the lower shield there is a deep-groove ball orcylindrical roller bearing to perform guide function.

In the case when the speed/load conditions exceedthe capability of antifriction bearings, but also uponrequest, pivoted pad combined vertical thrust andguide bearing is used in the upper shield. Pivotedpad or cylindrical guide bearing is mounted in thelower shield. Depending on design conditions thesebearings can be self-lubricated and cooled bynatural air circulation around the oil reservoir or byinduced air over the finned cooling surfaces of thebearing compartment. They also can be cooled bywater circulating in wire wound tube coolerssubmerged in the oil tank or by circulating the oiltrough an external air-to-water heat exchanger.

FRC type belongs to our general purpose F series,consisting of horizontal, foot mounted (IM B3,IEC 34-7) induction machines constructed on theprinciple of variable modules. FRC type is totallyenclosed (IP 54, IEC 34-5), self-ventilated with air-to-water heat exchanger (IC 81 W7, IEC 34-6) andsquirrel cage rotor for direct starting. The range ofrated powers as a function of number of poles of the6000 V, 50 Hz basic design motors with class Finsulation for S1 type duty as per IEC 34-1operational conditions are shown on the diagrambelow.

Main constructional features of the motors arerobust welded stator case, fabricated steel shields,labyrinth sealed bearings with grease disc, twosymmetrical inner air circuits with radial air ducts forboth directions of rotation, top mounted heatexchanger with brass tubes, two-layer stator windingwith strengthened turn-to-turn insulation, fabricated

steel terminal boxes of IP 55 protection grade withpressure relief membrane, double cage rotor forheavy starting. Pt 100 resistance temperaturedetectors are built in the stator slots and at thebearings.

On special request we build in additional sensors(microswitch, contact thermometer, vibrationsensor, speed sensor) and space heaters. Besidethe basic design we can deliver variants of specialelectrical (15 kV, 60 Hz, 6 terminals, two voltagelevel, even higher pole numbers than shown in thetable) and constructional (two shaft ends, slidebearing, increased safety, pressurized and non-sparking type design for potentially explosiveenvironment) versions and variants meeting specialrequirements and standards (low noise, highrunaway speed, increased reliability for energetics,etc.).

FRAV type belongs to our general purpose F series,consisting of vertical, flange mounted (IM V1, IEC34-7) induction machines constructed on principleof variable modules. FRAV type is totally enclosed(IP 54, IEC 34-5), self cooled motor with air-to-water heat exchanger (IC 81 W7, IEC 34-6) and slip-ring rotor with permanently operating brushes withrotor circuit resistance for starting and speedcontrol. The range of rated powers as a function ofnumber of poles of the 6000 V, 50 Hz basic designmotors with class F insulation for S1 type duty asper IEC 34-1 operational conditions are shown onthe diagram below.

Main constructional features of the motors arerobust welded stator case, fabricated steel shields,labyrinth sealed bearings with grease disk, twosymmetrical inner air circuits with radial air ducts forboth directions of rotation, side mounted heatexchanger with brass tubes, two-layer stator windingwith strengthened turn-to-turn insulation, fabricated

steel terminal boxes of IP 55 protection grade withpressure relief membrane, 3-phase two-layer rotorwinding. Pt 100 resistance temperature detectorsare built in the stator slots and at the bearings.

On special request we build in additional sensors(microswitch, contact thermometer, vibrationsensor, speed sensor) and space heaters. Besidethe basic design we can deliver variants of specialelectrical (15 kV, 60 Hz, 6 terminals, two voltagelevel, even higher pole numbers than shown in thetable) and constructional (manual or motor drivenbrush-lifting device with short circuiting contacts,weather protected or pipe connection design)versions and variants meeting special requirementsand standards (low noise, high runaway speed,speed control with thyristor cascade, etc.). Synchronous machines are traditional products ofCG. Nowadays our products involve salient polemotors and generators.

• Output range is 1–70 MVA.• Voltage level is 1–15 kV.• Pole numbers are 4 and more.

The machines are supplied in compliance with theapplicable IEC Standards, i.e. IEC 60034. Theelectrical design parameters of the generators areselected to minimize the harmonic content andtherefore to meet the requirements of IEC 60034-1for Telephone Harmonic Factor (THF). The mainmounting and coupling dimensions comply with IEC60072. Mounting arrangement are both horizontaland vertical.

The stator is similar to that described at inductionmachines (see: first page of General TechnicalInformation). The rotor has salient poles. The polesare either solid or laminated ones. In case oflaminated poles there are damping cage bars builtinto the pole shoes. In case of motors, these barsserve also as starting cage. They can be connectedtogether to create a complete cage system.

Fixing of the poles depends on the speed and size.For high speed low pole number machines we applyhammer head fixing, for lower speed medium sizedove-tails are common. For large size machines

there is steel yoke, and the poles are fixed to it bybolts. The bearings are roller or slide type,depending on speed and size.

• Static: static excitation takes the form of anexternal supply to a transformer/rectifiercombination and a DC output via resistor andchangover switch to the main rotor. This solutionis used for both generators and motors.

• Brushless: the standard brushless exciter is analternator with rotating armature and stationaryfield. The rotating diodes of the brushless exciterare connected in a single or double three-phasebridge configuration and are selected withelectrical and mechanical ratings according toactual requirements. Normally the diodes areprotected by surge suppressors. The exciter canbe extended by a permanent magnet pilot exciter.In case of generators an automatic voltageregulator, which is normally a panel mountedequipment is applied. When applying for motors,to avoid the high voltage on the diode bridgeduring starting, rotating thyristors are appliedwhich act as a short circuit across the excitationwinding, protecting the diodes and avoiding slipfrequency oscillating torques.

A special application of synchronous machine is thesynchronous condenser or compensator. This unit isnot connected to any mechanical equipment and itsreactive power is varied by adjusting its field current.

CG Electric Systems Hungary, former Ganz Electrichas had very long experience in manufacturinghydroelectric generators. Market segment of thehydroelectric generators and their associatedequipment is considered very important. Nearly all ofour equipments operate abroad (in India, Peru, NewSealand etc.) because of the Hungarian naturalendowments. In many cases water turbines havealso been supplied by a Hungarian firm, GanzMachinery Works.

The stator frame is a welded structure strengthenedwith inside radial and axial ribs. The stator frametakes up the weight of stator laminated body, bearingforces, the windings placed into the slots of thecore, and the different loads arising of short circuitsand different operational conditions, and transfersthem to the foundation. There are defined crosssection holes in the strengthening ribs of the frame.These holes ensure and define the flow of coolinggas. The mechanical strength of the windings’ end issecured by insulated rings, suitable inserts andthermo-shrinking ribbon bandages. The stator coreis ventilated by the means of radially arrangedventilating channels. There are 2 Pt 100 typethermometers between the layers of each phase inthe middle part of the windings, for measuring thewindings temperature. Circulation of the cooling airnecessary to transfer the loss arising in thegenerator is promoted by the ventilating effects ofthe rotor poles. The slip-rings and the brush holdersystem are placed over the upper combined bearing.Maintenance of the brushes can be made throughthe windows of the upper shield.

The rotor is made with salient poles. The poles arelaminated to decrease losses. In the pole shoes

there are damping bars which are brazed to shortcircuiting (connecting) segments. Segments areconnected with flexible conductive parts betweenthe poles. These damping bars ensure good wavedamping effect. Pole coils are made of edge bendedflat copper plates, having good cooling conditions.Rotor windings is made with class F high qualityinsulation. The poles are fixed to the rotor rim withbolts. The rotor rim is made of 150 mm thick solidsteel cylinder. The rotor hub is connected to the rimwith ribs. On the bottom surface of the rim, thehydraulic rotor brake system is arranged. To ensurethe required GD² there is a flywheel connected to theupper part of the rim with ribs. The rotor hub isconnected to the shaft with keys. The upper thrustbearing is connected to the upper part of the forgedshaft.

The thrust bearing is self lubricating, natural oilcirculation type with oil to water coolers. Antifrictionmetal sliding surface is made of segments thatensures sliding contact with the very fine surface onthe bell shaped hub piece pulled onto the shaft.

The upper guide bearing is united with the thrustbearing, their oil system and cooler is a commonarrangement. Lower guide bearing is situated in aholding structure also with self lubricating circulationand with oil to water cooler. Temperature detectorsare used to control bearing temperatures inoperation. The bearing on the exciter side isinsulated from the earthed parts of the generator toavoid arising of the bearing currents. For abovereason the oil pipe connections are also insulated.

For the raw and cement ball-mill twin drives slip-ringor other wound type rotor motors are used all overthe world. Ganz – first in the world – successfullybroke this tradition with double squirrel cage motorssupplied to Duna-Dráva Cement Company atBeremend.

This new solution is significantly cheaper also fromthe investment side compared to the traditionalsolutions. On one hand the double-cage motor issubstantially cheaper than the slip-ring motor – onthe other hand the costly starting equipment and theadherent short-circuiting switch together with thecontroller are not required. The usage of our solutiondue to the low operational and maintenance costsfurther increase the adaptability of this newequipment.

One of the basic condition of the physical realizationof the cement mill twin drives is the very carefuldesign of the speed-torque curves. This solutionguarantees safe starting of the mills, decreases themechanical oscillation during starting and duringoperation, too. After the successful tests BeremendCement Mills Co. decided a complete renewal-reengineering of their existing equipments and putinto operation all of the 12 motors supplied by GanzTranselektro at the beginning of 2002.

The three phase double-cage rotor asynchronousmotor is adequate for direct starting. It has acompletely closed stator with mounted air-to-air heatexchanger. The roller bearings are provided withautomatic greasing. There are intern built-in SKFVibrational Sensors. The stator winding has Fthermal class

History of traction machines

Our company has been manufacturing electrictraction equipment since 1892. In 1893 Ganz beganto deal with three-phase electric traction machinesthrough the initiative of Kálmán Kandó. In 1898 thefirst three-phase small passenger tramway hauledby a 15 HP motor was commissioned on the shoresof the Lake Geneva at Evian Les Bains. In 1898 Ganzstarted the complete electrification of Tellina Valley inNorthern Italy. The electrified “Val Tellina” line wasopened in 1902. This was the first electrified mainline in Europe and the World’s first HV alternatingcurrent railway.

In 1923 the first single-phase 15kV 50Hz phase-converter-system locomotive was put into operation.

At the end of the 40’s new phase- and frequency-converter locomotives with BOCO axle layout weredeveloped.

In the 50’s DC drives become generally prevailing. Inthe frame of modernisation of Hungarian StateRailway new products have been developed.

In the 60’s Ganz manufactured a number of new3000 HP silicon-rectifier mono motor-drivenlocomotives (V43). These ones are still in service.

They were followed in the 70’s by 5000 HP semi-controlled thyristor-bridge powered locomotives(V63). Here motors with support bearings wereapplied in the direct axle-drive utilizing a specialGanz developed integrated gear box cover.

Since the beginning Ganz delivered motor-trains forrailways, as well as, motor-cars tram-cars trolley-buses for city public transport. Nowadays ourdriving motors – both DC and AC – for thesevehicles are designed to be supplied by most up-to-date electronic devices.

Ganz Transelektro’s new traction motors aresupplied in compliance with IEC 349 Standard.

Till now Ganz produced more than 30,000 tractionmotors.

The construction and the operational characteristicsof the AC traction motors for trolleybus drive entirelymatches the running features and the connection tothe body-work requirements. Their design is verysimple and robust, and requires minimalmaintenance. The stator and rotor iron core islaminated, the stator is frameless type. The motor isconnected to the trolley body-work in almosthorizontal position at four legs through rubber logs.

The motor is of double insulation. The basic type isopen self ventilated, but it is possible to use airducts connecting them at the air in- and outlet.The ventilation is obtained by a shaft mounted radialfan, suitable for both sense of rotation. The bearingsare closed roller types, filled with grease, demandingno relubrication between two major overhauls.One of them is insulated to avoid bearing currents.The stator outlet cables come out through cableglands on the NDE shield and they are directly

connected to the inverter. The speed sensor andservo pump are fixed to the NDE shield.

The thermal class of the VPI insulation system is200 °C, the insulation is reinforced according to therequirements of PWM inverter. The design wascarried out with a 3D CAD system. The photosbelow show a complete traction motor and itsapplication, one of our outstanding projects whereour drive motors werebuilt in.
